If Microsoft actually names it the Xbox Two, I will refuse to buy it if for no other reason than the name since it's the 4th Xbox! Xbox One is bad enough and I'm still not sure I'll buy it, again because of the totally out-of-order lame name, and I mean out-of-order in both meanings; wrong order, and against [better] judgement! I still don't even like '360', it's number 2 for God sake!! Microsoft sucks at every turn. I wish there was still another American console company. :P

Is it just me, or am I also not seeing any disc drives on either? If I can't have hard copy games, then I guess this generation WILL be the last generation of consoles I ever buy, if I decide to even buy them! Well, I read the article and indeed it seems they are both looking to streaming games instead of physical media.  :fyou: I've never been much of a PC gamer, but I don't care for Steam for just this reason. As usual, I'm probably the minority, but if i wasn't, then I be scared...that I was losing my mind like the majority. :wreck-it-ralph:

Looks like there is a disc drive on the top right of the Xbox Too, but I know eventually some big name company will release an all download system (you could argue that iPhones and iPads are kinda like that already)

Of course, the systems may look very different when they actually come out as well.

One could argue that Apple is already doing this with the newest Apple TV.

Isn't there some Linux based console out already called the Ouyi or something like that? Which is all download content? Or at least I'd heard of something like that coming, maybe it never made it or whatever. Something like Steam but in a console? I remember someone telling me about it within the last year.

Found it after trying a few similar names: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouya

It's Android based. It doesn't look like it's doing to well or going to last, apparently only 7 thousand sold so far, since 2013. That makes the Jaguar with it's 125,000 sold by 1996 look like a successful juggernaut in sales by comparison! :starwars_yoda:

I'm not liking this streaming trend at all, in games or movies. maybe I'm being a bit hypocritical, since I am an avid user of Hulu and Netflix and half my 360 library is downloaded to my hard drive, But I still buy movies and games on disc for my library and all the 360 games I have downloaded that are for sale in physical form (i.e, not xbox arcade), I intend to buy physical copies of, once they are in the bargain bin (after all, I already paid for them once, except for the Xbox Gold freebies). :mac_floppy:

They (xbox live) say (and I've already done it) you can download them again anytime if your HDD goes belly-up or you made room on your crowded drive for other games until you get a USB memory stick or put them on the Cloud, get bigger HDD, etc., but you KNOW that will only last as long as they support the console, and you have to have Xbox Gold to re-download them! And something disturbing to me, I found out the hard way when I moved, is that some games downloaded, GTA 5 for my example, can't be saved or saved games loaded, unless you are connected to Xbox Live! That was when I knew for sure I had to get a physical copy of the game so I can play it if I skip Xbox Live for a while, lose Internet or when they stop supporting the 360, which is probably imminent regardless of what Microsoft says, they did it to the Xbox after all! :fyou:

So what happens when these new generation of consoles becomes yesterday's tech and are no longer supported? Will they automatically just become worthless bricks? Especially with STREAMING gaming which isn't even permanent downloads! As far as I understand it anyway...you can forget about digging them out of your closet 10 or 20 years later and play them like we do with the retro consoles of today! Or being an active retro collector with them, or collector at all, even if they aren't retro yet! :pile:

I've always wondered why 7th gen (Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360) lasted so long. Even then, they're not dead yet. They're are still (somewhat) getting new releases of triple A games.

I think it was just that they had software that could still be made. For a time, games were not looking AS GOOD as they could be on better hardware. For the first time these were computers that could update on OS instead of not being able to update drivers, graphic engines, etc. I am surprised that these rumors are coming out, but Nintendo's new console.... that could change everything.

Complacency.  They were making a killing selling games.  As long as the competition didn't rock the boat with a new console....everyone was happy.

I think it's really weird that 8th gen consoles PS4 and XB1 are almost identical hardware wise.  You'd think one would want to out-do the other somehow.

That's what happens when companies get too big and successful for their own good. complacency did in Atari (and the others)with the Video game crash. It took the Japanese to knock the market upside the head. It's getting to that point again. Sony and Microsoft have been too successful and have become satisfied with current market shares and don't feel the need as much to compete with each other, so you get two practically carbon-copy systems. We need a new company with a new console to shake up the industry again with innovation, out of the box thinking and a genuine desire to be the best and take the market by storm...we may never see it, with such juggernauts in control now. Another reason I think I'm done buying new consoles, the 360 just might be my last generation and I just stick to retro from now on (with the 360 fast becoming retro, as well as the rest from the last two generations). We need another video game crash to change it all, again. But today's consumers seem to be happy with the status-quo still, which is always disappointing. New experiences and new challenges are what make life interesting, not the status-quo. We need another Nolan Bushnell.

Another thing, Nintendo is quite literally rolling in dough, and they rake in even more every day. They could keep making hardware at a loss for several more decades before they'd ever even get close to bankruptcy. What reason would they have to stop?

It's kind of fascinating to watch.  It seems likely that the ".5" iterations are on the way...after all, the prior generation lasted so long...why not squeeze out a few more years on the current platform.

I'm going to guess that for the next gen, Microsoft and Sony will go in different directions hardware wise.  With the current gen, it's hard to differentiate between the two brands since they are so similar internally.
