In defense of games most people hate

There are games out there that most people just cannot stand.  Your job is to name one and then defend it.  Here's mine:

Laser Blast

Why it's hated:
It's repetitive.  Very repetitive.  Once you get the 1-2-3 rhythm going, you can play forever, or until you simply get bored.  Way too easy.  No variety at all.

Why I like it:

- It was the first Activision game I ever bought.

- David Crane!

- The graphics are excellent.  I love the little touches like the moving middle section on your ship, and the up and down motion of the tank wheels.  The laser graphics are nice too...multi-colored...only the Atari systems could make this effect.  And the way the whole screen shakes when you crash.  Perfect.
- I'm going to guess this was the first side scrolling game on the 2600.

- My kids were always impressed that I could play this game with my eyes closed.

I'll have to give it some thought. In the meantime I agree with your assessment of Laser Blast, there was a time I was quite good at it. I remember back in the day thinking those things too, very repetitive and yet damn if I didn't always feel like "Oh just one more go", hours later..........

Sonic Colors
Sonic_Colors_box_artwork.png

Why it's hated:
- Because it's not Sonic Adventure.
- Because it's not Sonic Rush.
- Because it has a Rush Clone on DS, made by their hated Sonic Publisher: Dimps.
- Because it feels like Unleashed.

Why I like it:
- So much places to go to, and things to see and do.
- Highest graphics for a Wii game at the time, besides Mario Galaxy.
- Witty dialog.
- Funny Easter Eggs.
- Speed.
- Epic Boss Battles.

- EXCELLENT Music!!!

Dark Chambers.

Absolutely love this game.  I've read reviews blasting it for not being Gauntlet and even a review trashing it for not having music(?).  The best way to play the game is with a buddy and with your stereo on (in fact that's the way most 2600 games should be played. right?).  I've had repeated hours of entertainment out of this one.  Give it a second chance

I'm going again!

Dragster

Why it's hated:
- Blown engine!
- Every new player will blow the engine over and over until they read the instructions and practice.
- Two player game only?
- A "game" lasts about 10 seconds.

Why I like it:
- David Crane!
- The original arcade game was awesome...steering wheel, stick shift, and gas pedal...but no clutch.  This version has a clutch, and it's pretty dang realistic.
- It takes some time to get the timing down and finish a race without blowing your engine.  Satisfying.
- You just gotta try one more time to beat your best time.
- Popping wheelies make you cool.
- Screw the second player....just keep playing once player to get your lowest score.

Highlander: The Last of the MacLeods

The Jaguar CD had scant few games and about half of the original release line-up was available on competing platforms. One of the exclusive titles the add-on had was Highlander: The Last of the MacLeods, a game based on Highlander: The Animated Series.

In Highlander, you take control Quentin MacLeod in a beautifully pre-rendered 3D world. Unfortunately, the in game characters are comprised of flat shaded polygons and the character models are kinda meh, even for the time. The game also isn't terribly intuitive; the (at first) clunky controls and frequently changing camera angles take a lot of getting used to. However, if you can get past the break-in period of half an hour or so, you get used to the controls and a decent adventure in the vein of the original Alone in the Dark opens up. I also enjoy the high quality scenes from the cartoon. While it is far from the best title on the Jaguar CD, it's good corny fun and doesn't deserve the hate that it gets.

Note: Sorry - I just realized that this was started in the 2600 subforum. Reading through, I thought it was all gen. I'll have to think about 2600 games. Oops!

great choice! I've seen this title get some negative reviews from folks but I've gotten some serious enjoyment out of it.  Playing to beat your best time is addictive!

Not that I've heard anyone hate on this game, it's just one I love that I've never heard anyone else talk about. Dark Cloud for ps2, while it can be very annoying when you build up a weapon and have it break!  I love this game and have played it through 3 times. Unlike any game I've ever played!
