I know it is unlikely and some of you will want to throw rocks and garbage at me for saying so but I would personally love to see Nintendo go software only. Despite this I DO love Nintendo but that said I have had no interest in any of their hardware since Gamecube. Seems everything after that they insisted on not having anything near the power or capability of competing hardware and yeah I "get" the idea of how Nintendo rely on the first party stuff and different play "experiences" and I appreciate their presence in the market motivates competition but at the same time I am tired of the few third party games that dribbled onto their hardware always being different simply because the hardware was not as capable. If the real attraction to Nintendo is their first party stuff, their ip's and franchises than why not just go completely software focused by choice and focus on releasing amazing Nintendo brands and characters on other hardware? I know some of you will say Sega tried that and the result has been not the greatest but I think in Sega's case it was not exactly by choice, if Nintendo did this they would have a much better result I am sure of it especially if they did it under their own terms. Again, I know that it is not going to happen or very likely but I for would would be happy to see the big "N" exist solely as a games producer as my mind boggles at what they could accomplish with their franchises (and hey maybe even some new ideas!) on other more powerful competing hardware. Sega "leaving" the hardware market was not so much a personal choice as a necessity regardless of the perception they attempted. Nintnendo is in a far better position to go softweare only and do it right imho. In the worst case scenario I've not bothered with Nintnedo hardware in years preferring to use older consoles and handhelds so really I have nothing to lose either way. I just think Nintnedo's titles could be more intereresting on superior hardware and maybe if they were no longer focused on hardware that time might be put to use to create new characters and franchises instead of relying on the same ones over and over. nosweargamer Posted February 28, 2016 Report Share Posted February 28, 2016 I think you could make the point that Nintendo rarely tried to be the most powerful. The Master System was clearly more powerful than the NES and the 7800 could handle more sprites. The SNES was overall more impressive than the Genesis, but it came out later and didn't have the same speed. And while the N64 had some impressive qualities, it had a hard time competing with the disc based systems. And don't forget the G & W Game Boy. As a side note, my current favorite system is the 3DS and that is without using the 3D. There are a lot of games with a retro feel to them both on the eShop, DS format and 3DS format. Honestly, I am a big Nintendo fan with quite a history with the consoles and handhelds I guess I just have not been as attracted to their usual Mario / Zelda / Mario Kart / Metroid etc titles for some time. Hell, I even have a Wii even if it sits in the box. I never did feel the urge to get a WiiU. I knew the suggestion would not exactly be a popular opinion though, no harm no foul, guess I just would like to see Nintendo on other non-Nintendo hardware as well as seeing them on powerful hardware that at least matches the competition (I KNOW clearly it does not have too) . I understand Nintendo fulfills a very specific demographic that is perfectly happy with the way they still continue to do things but I don't think that is me any longer. Fair enough, guess I am alone with my view but it would not be the first time. I continue to enjoy many of their original 8 - 16 bit offerings on original hardware as well as emulation but for newer titles I prefer other platforms. Splatoon has done well and Super Mario Maker is amazing. Gaming doesn't just have to be one thing, it can be many things, and I hope they're around for a long time to come.
