They are hoping to build on Rare franchises like Battletoads, Banjo-Kazooie, and Perfect Dark which were staples of past Nintendo greatness. I'm excited to see some of these names resurrected, but it strikes me as a company that made the richest man in the world the richest man in the world is buying up whatever good Nintendo history they can get their hands on. MaximumRD Posted January 14, 2015 Report Share Posted January 14, 2015 Yes those may be Nintendo classics but MS bought out RARE who own those franchises, remember companies paid for Nintendo to allow them to release their games on NES / SuperNES / N64 etc but the titles they released are RARE properties and now MS properties. I think even Microsoft's purchase of Rare is a bit of picking at bones of Nintendo's former glory. Yes, Rare Ltd. was its own thing, yes, they own the franchises, and yes, Microsoft bought them not Nintendo. I'm not suggesting it's legally wrong or immoral in some way to do this. I just think it's really hacky and cheap of them to rehash old stuff so closely associated with Nintendo when they could be coming up with new stuff instead. Well I see your point but the few original titles even on original Xbox didn't fair so well and the gaming industry just like the movie industry prefers to play it "safe" whenever possible, you get more original ideas these days with Indie or Homebrew but the big players investing multi millions want a sure thing as much as possible. I think though that the big Rare fans were hoping modern sequels to the great classics were exactly what MS had in store when they acquired Rare and giving the fans what they want is just good business. Releasing an unknown property even one produced by Rare is always going to be a gamble but releasing modern interpretations of say Perfect Dark or Banjo pretty much guarantees a built in fan base. I for one would look very much forward to it. I mean if Nintendo themselves can re-hash Mario, Zelda, etc over and over and over why not get some modernized Rare classics? Personally my only thing when it comes to building on original great classics (this is rarely done properly) is staying true to the original property, give good fan service and homage, taking the characters into new realms or directions is fine but not at the expense of changing the original idea too much, meaning if I am playing a new Banjo or Battle Toads or Perfect Dark I want to feel that I am truly playing the spiritual successor to those classics, what I don't want is to be playing a game that seems completely foreign and unfamiliar that just seems to have a tacked on Banjo / Perfect Dark / Conkers "skin" or "theme" with only the title being the only indication of what it is based on. and I think anyway somewhere in the game the original game should also be included (I mean how hard can that really be?) the original game intact and maybe a remixed version or graphically enhanced version as well. I have seen Mega Man , Sonic , Mario, Zelda redone and rehashed to death and frankly I would love to see some other classics brought back at least one more time IF they are given the treatment and respect they deserve of course. This pack has the chance to open up retro gaming to some newbies in the current generation. And it actually supports the studio that made the game whereas if people just downloaded illegal roms, it wouldn't. Plus if it sells well, it could open the door for more official retro re-releases in the future. Also, don't forget, Microsoft spent/risked 375 Millions dollars to get Rare and they often lose money on the hardware side as it is. While some may see them as an evil empire (as with most large companies), their brand has lost steam in recent years and don't think it is impossible for them to go belly up one day or at the least they could downsize. Remember, Atari was once the fastest growing in the history of the world. Love em or hate em, they provide jobs for many people besides Bill Gates, even here in the states and I would hate for anyone to lose their job because their leader is demonized for being a rich, smart businessman.
