Holding down the A Button when you press Start lets Mario continue where you left off!

For almost 30 years I've played Super Mario Bros. on NES and NEVER knew there was continue code! I saw this today, and it was news to me so I wanted to share with you guys. Most old school Nintendo gamers knows about the Konami code, but did you know there was a Super Mario Bros. code that lets you continue from the start screen after you die, placing you right where you left off with a fresh set of lives?

It's easy! When Mario dies on his final life and you return to the start screen, just hold down the A button while you hit start and you'll wind up right back where you left off. How rad is that!?

pretty cool how this type of info is discovered 30-35 years later!

Matt, yes! I tried this on real hardware, my original NES that I grew up with, the one that you saw at my house, and it actually works! I can't believe we didn't grow up knowing this code. A + START is about as simple a code as it gets.

Is there an easy way to clean the 72 pin inside an NES "without" opening up the case?

Mine are dirty.....carts fit tight but I have to wiggle them a bit while they are seated inside the console. Just trying to figure out how to get the rubbing alcohol onto the 72 pin - q-tips will not be long enough to reach it and I don't want to take it apart.

Arenafoot, I'm moving this line of questioning to a more relevant post and answering your question here: http://forums.atari.io/index.php/topic/600-nintendo-nes-cartridge-cleaning-secrets/?p=4165

I'll echo what everyone else said & wonder in amazement how this went unknown for so long??

Pre-internet, we all knew the Konami code. Heck, I've memorized the code for Mike Tyson (007-373-5963!) yet something as simple as this, for a game EVERYONE had, no one knew.

I can't wait to try this. I'll work on having three retro games to share on the "Last Three Games You've Played" thread.  :thumb:  :nintendo_mario_goomba:
