To me, it's something about preserving that first unboxing feeling (usually Christmas, as in my case). When I was cleaning out the old family home, I'd forgot it was still around and just the sight of it flooded my mind with the hours, days, years of switching on the console, popping carts in, wiggling the flaky adaptor wire when it stopped wanting to be a working adaptor, and just the general time spent daydreaming about VCS gameplay during school hours.
