I really am curious about what music everyone listens to! Not just " I listen to everything" what 3-5 bands/ musicians are your go to music.

It's an odd mix for me. Tom Waits, Weezer, Velvet Underground, 80's new wave and the Dead Kennedys.

We have Weezer and VU in common.  Those guys (and gal) are great.

My go-to stuff:  Pearl Jam, U2, Rilo Kiley, Pixies, AC/DC.  Cowboy Junkies.  They Might Be Giants.

Feels like I'm forgetting something important....

I'll tell you, there are times when a few bands go into heavy rotation in my ears (most of the bands already mentioned in this post), then are dropped to make way for the next thing.

I favor instrumental, mostly. Lotsa jazz and ambient electronic.

 - McCoy Tyner is a fave jazz pianist and truly a go-to source of music which will tune my soul, whenever needed.

 - Tangerine Dream, while not really ambient, have made tracks that not only get me going but also take me back to the 80s with those tunes with the thumping double-time bass line (and also the soundtrack to Risky Business).

 - And I would top it off with Jimi Hendrix, whose first three albums helped define the groove in my life, and the more recent sets (like Black Gold) which reveal his improv jams and offers lessons in letting go and cutting loose.

I would like to add Production Music sounds as something that offers tremendous retro appeal. You can find some on YouTube.

This background music to 60s-70s commercials and movies in complete album format from DeWolfe, Bruton, Rouge and other companies was a revelation to me.

I listen to this whenever I can.

You would love the EMP museum in Seattle Washington.  They have a whole section devoted to Jimi Hendrix, and a rotating collection of his stuff.  Wardrobe, instruments, written notes, etc.  It is totally awesome.

I'm mostly into prog rock, but I like many genres.   I like bands like Haken, Yes, Dream Theater, Flying Colors, Spock's Beard to name a few.

I'm also a big fan of classic jazz and swing, prog metal if the singing is clean, and Leonard Cohen (because he transcends all genres.

funny that you mention Cohen: I just made an iHeart Radio channel based around him! Really, I DO listen to (mostly) everything. It really, REALLY depends on mood, BAC, and current activities. My son is into 80's/90's techno/hardcore/trance, so I've been getting back into that a lot again lately. I've also been listening to "K-Billy's Super Sounds of the 70's" lately...

- 80s hair metal. Not the term I would use to describe it, but people know what I'm talking about when I use that. And the more obscure, the better. Yeah, Motley Crue, Ratt, etc. are all good, but I'd rather listen to Living Colour, Dangerous Toys, Mr. Big & Badlands any day.

- mid to late 80's hip hop/rap. Classic LL Cool J, Dana Dane, Run DMC, NWA, etc. I'm good up until the mid-90s and then I lose interest.

- 90's alternative rock

- 80's & 90's pop, with some 70's thrown in as well. Being born in '73 didn't give me much exposure to the 70's, but I dig it.

I listen to everything except country and rap. If I turn on the radio I've been listening to a station that plays radio hits from the 70s and 80s. If I stream Accuradio I'm listening to the Flock of 80s station.

I've been listening to a lot of Gary Numan lately (old stuff and new stuff).

If you couldn't tell from my avatar, I'm a big Beatles fan. R.E.M. is my probably my second favorite. It's hard to narrow down to 5 what I like, so here are a few: Monkees, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Interpol, Spoon, 60s-70s Motown, Herman's Hermits, Vampire Weekend, They Might Be Giants, Beth Orton, Inbreds (from Canada, there's another one out there), Land of Talk, the Smithereens, Pink Floyd. I have been getting into some jazz recently, and I really like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Louis Armstrong. I will stop now.

My favorite bands vary depending on genre. Though my absolute favorite band is the Beatles. I have Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper, the LOVE album, and the 1 album.

Jpop - Hatsune Miku (computer generated singer, pretty big in Japan)

Orchestral - John Williams

That's really all I listen to.
