G.I. Joe Comics

As a kid, my favorite comic book was G.I. Joe by Marvel. I had a handful of issues and when a Comic Book Store opened up near my house, I began collecting back issues while staying current the best I could.

 

Over the past year or so, I decided to read them again and I was pleasantly surprised how well they still hold up.

This wasn't just some licensed fluff, but a well written and enjoyable comic book series, thanks in large part to writer Larry Hamma.

 

Thanks mostly to the IDW collections, I now have the whole series and am about currently a half way through it. I've also read the complete Special Missions spin off. I'm looking forward to finishing it in 2017 and sharing more thoughts in the future.

My favorite comic as a kid was Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes, and later  just Legion of Superheroes. 

I could gush on and on about that, but nobody knows much about it.

I think I had a Surperboy comic that featured the actor from the TV show on the cover.

And they crossover-ed with GI Joe! (more on that later)

 

G.I. Joe was sooo popular as a comic book, it had a spin off series: Special Missions.

I had no idea that a collection of these existed! This was the only comic book series I ever subscribed too & I picked up the issues that I recall fondly. I'd love to read the whole series.

I didn't get into comic books too much during my pre-teen years.  I did pick up a few X-Men comics during my teenage years.  Then again in my hometown the only way to get comic books was at one small convenient store and magazine racks at department and grocery stores. 

 

It wasn't until my early 20's when I would dig into the a bit heavier when I discovered a comic book store in the over populated area my mother moved to.  They had new and used comics and for I believe it was $4 you get a grab bag with mixed comics in it.  So, I grabbed about 10 of those and went home to see what I had.  Each bag had at least 12 comic books inside, no duplicates, and of older more common titles.  

 

I don't know if it was by accident or not but one of the bags had a new comic in it called "Dawn".  It was the first issue so I read it and was immediately hooked.  I returned to the store the next day to see if any more had been released and to pick up some comic book boxes, bags, and backings to protect my investment.  I also searched for some of the missing issues to the X-Men comics because I had obtained a LOT of those with only a few numbers apart.  I did find two more issues of Dawn and bought another 1st issue because there was a coupon in the comic book to order a special edition Dawn comic that came with a certificate of authenticity and each was suppose to be individually signed.  I ordered it probably paying more than I should have but I loved the characters in the comic. 

 

I easy shelled out $100 on grab bags and used comics, more boxes, bags, and backings at every chance I got which was usually every week.  And I was delivering pizza at the time where tips added up quick some days so you can guess where that went.  The only issue of Dawn I have not read is 4 as it was suppose to be the last in the series.  Mom passed before that issue came out and before I could retrieve my belongings from her home it got broke into and ransacked.  After that I lost interest in collecting comics and stuck with video games, movies, and music.  But if you are curious or never heard of the Dawn comic books here's a link to the Wikipedia page.  The artwork is simply amazing.  There is also Dawn cards with some images more fitting for adults.  I had the complete set including the three special cards.  Not sure what it would be worth these days if anything.

Most recently, however, I discovered Mega Man comics.  Those are bit pricey compared to what I'm use to.  I have only three issues.  After that the local grocery store, the only place in this town to get comic books, stopped carrying them.
