The whole Review Score Mag scan stuff been done/very subjective etc, so thought i'd add to Babes In Silicon Land feature by putting up more UK Press coverage that just looked at Lynx in general.

Early screens of Lynx Blue Lightning in The Games Machine, refer to it as Blue Harrier...

Missunderstanding or was this a working title?

The 'recent' feature on the game in UK RetroGamer Magazine never mentioned it, so i'm left wondering....

A few more...

I felt the Handy feature had to go up, as it has Atari reporting 75,000 Lynx Units shifted in the USA over Xmas 89/90.

That's often cited as key part of this SUGGESTED 3 Million Lynx Unit's sold figure that likes of RetroGamer Magazine/Wikip.etc now dangle around as FACT, just because darryl still went along with a suggested to him figure..sounds about right...hmn, that's not quite the degree of accuracy you need to have that 3 Million set in stone is it, a suggestion..a claimed by Atari figure...

I thought the sherrif's department said claims like these were not to be used as fact unless they could be verified by proven sources?

The crippling lack of software avaiable for Lynx highlighted, plus another colour handheld that had the specs in KEY areas to out do the Lynx:

Sega's Game gear was already beating Lynx on screen Resolution and number of colours on screen, NEC's offering went further still...

512 colours on screen.

Resolution of 238X312.

Sound is another area Lynx was beaten on, Nec's device offering 6 channel sound compared to 4 on Lynx.

And as for software...ohhh please :)

That's funny because I never thought of the Game Gear as beating the Lynx on anything other than third party software support.

I went from Game Gear to Lynx and whilst lynx had better quality LCD screen..less ghosting etc..the lower resolution and less colours on screen was noticeable in a number of titles.

Plus..i couldn't believe Lynx Desert Strike was less detailed than the GG version.

Lynx version has a lot going for it but falls foul of that overly zoomed in look and big pixels.

More Misc Lynx coverage..

Market research figures now putting US Lynx sales at 200,000...

But again it's a vague, uncredited figure, which i personally wouldn't use as a credible source...

More warnings from UK Press that the Lynx needed more software, badly and not just old coin-op's brought to the Lynx, great as rampage was, this was a game we'd seen already on A8, 2600, ST and 7800.....

Also press happy to point out the dangers of using large graphics on the Lynx small screen...APB joining Double Dragon, Pinbill Jam, Desert Strike etc in terms of games where it was effecting gameplay to a degree either going for the 'zoomed-in' look/tables spread across 2 screens (Pinball Jam) or simply putting large graphics on screen thus reducing longer viewpoints...

Also Atari expecting 150,000 Lynx units to be sold in UK, but where as Sega was advertising galore, signing up software galore, Atari trickling games out at such a slow rate press had nothing to review...and warning Atari it's no good going the 'my hardware is more powerful than yours' route as Games machines simply live or die on the games released..if yours is lacking them, look out...

Not that Atari ever took any notice mind.

Last lot from ACE, see's Atari making bold promises, 5 Lynx titles a month..Pfff...

annoucing games we would never see..Eye Of The Beholder etc...

And Ace joining Gamezone in not being that impressed by S.T.U.N Runner, feeling that once visuals had worn off, you were left with a game that didn't have much to offer (Gamezone scored it 3/5 in it's console countdown).

Misc C+VG coverage..again with atari promising the software shortage would only be short term, sigh...

Gamezone though is often cited as having had a lot of love for the Lynx, which is true..there was decent Lynx coverage from them.

But a few review scores the more vocal tend not to mention when praising them are:

Bill And Ted's Adventures 2/5

Dirty Larry 2/5 described as Yawn, Yawn, Yawn.

Hard Drivin 3/5

Hydra 2/5

Pac-Land 3/5..it's crap was the statement

Scrapyard Dog 2/5

Turbo sub 2/5...

So they weren't shy of putting the boot in.

Another bumper crop with Atari dropping Prices, promising games...etc.

Another crop of reviews, which i'm NOT putting up to say Mag X was right, Mag Y was wrong..WAHHH!

Just that folks deserve to see the full spectrum of UK Press coverage as so much history is being written over, places wish to keep Atari related info for themselves or use for paid for work.

Cobblers to that says i..freedom of info and real version of events is what this community is all about.

Zzap64's coverage...

Atari (initally) really had the UK Press on it's side, we all expected Atari to do wonders with the hardware, the potential was stunning and yet the end result at hands of atari was a n utter disaster.
