I couldn't see a dedicated Mega CD/Sega CD thread on here and as a day 1 purchaser, back in the day, full £270 for a device that didn't even work, i had to swap Mega Drive consoles (see my letter) and for an add-on, that many feel was the start of where things started to go so, so wrong for Sega...i thought it'd be nice to create a thread looking at the hype/expectation and where it delivered and where it feel ohh so short... Dark Seed advertised, though i doubt ever started, sadly as i would of loved that... The comparison to Super NES (and no Jez San, the Sega CD was NOT as you claimed in RetroGamer Magazine sega's answer to your SFX chip for the SNES..but the SNES and it's Mode 7 and superior Soundchip etc, itself...) Capcom sadly never followed up on the amazing Final Fight conversion... It took Domark and a standard cartridge to bring a fantastic version of Prince Of Persia to the 16 bit Sega, CD version was huge dissapointment...

Jaguar XJ220 at least used the Sprite chips, but it was an upgraded Amiga game.

Ninja Warriors? Ohh come on, i'd been playing this on the C64 and ST, i did not spend £270 to play ye oldie titles like this...

Night Trap and Sewer Shark...Sega going the FMV route on hardware that could only display such a limited number of colours on screen (espically in early days) from a mere 512....that worked out as well as Atari pushing the Jaguar into full screen texture-mapping...

More CD Fodder....

Even Slipheed, once you got past inital WOW factor and realised it was just streaming assets off CD, failed to grip me...

Now THESE were how you did it...

Final Fight on Sega CD, p*ssed all over the SNES Version (fewer colours aside).

Thunderhawk:Total re-write of the already superb ST/Amiga game, designed for the console hardware (Core had originally used polygon 3D as in Home Micro versions, but it ran too slowly on MCD, so re-wrote it for the hardware instead, with stunning results).

We needed titles like these and many more of them.

Batman Returns-STUNNING 3D sections...Ohhh Sega, you could have done a upgraded version of Roadblasters using this game engine...

The Terminator S.E..Far, Far superior to the Cartridge version i paid £45 for day 1, finished on 1st go! was not happy...

Nice upgrade to Ecco...

Mire awfulness (Night Stalker)...

More FMV....

I often find myself comparing what happened with the CD Drive for the Mega Drive/Genesis to that of the Jaguar...

Both very advanced 2D machines, had mix of games that really tapped into the hardwares potential, but on flipside, some awful, outdated titles that should never of been ported, plus games asking far too much from the hardware..

Dune:Fantastic use of the CD storage medium, clever use of hardware's limited colours to do the FMV.

Sonic CD-I hated (yet bought again off PSN a few years back on PS3 to give a second chance, still hated).Loathed the music, time travel crap, special stage anything but special.

Slipheed-which the more ignorant UK Mega Drive press were describing as a SNES Starfox beater-totally different styles of gameplay.

Soul Star-I know Jaguar fans are so desperate for the Jaguar CD version to be released, but as someone who owned the MCD original, yes, it was Core design pushing the Thunderhawk Engine and MCD hardware to the limits, but it was really nothing special.

Plus come on..it speaks volumes when a flagship, 64 bit CD game is nothing more than a port from a 16 bit add on.

Monkey Island:Had on the ST, never a fan of it.

Chuck Rock II..nice but not enhanced enough over Cart version for myself.

Microcosm:Hmmn, converting from a system with 16.8 Million colours to choose from to 1 with 512....yeah, that'll work just fine...SIGH....

Dragons Lair..possibly 1 of THE most converted games i know of :)

Cliffhanger:awful game, but at least the MCD custom hardware used well and a more impressive snow section than Jaguar Val D'Skiing to boot :-)

The MCD CPU alone (let alone when combined with the Mega Drive CPU as well) was faster than that of the MD CPU, so how on earth did MCD Powermonger run SLOWER?

The legendary Battle Corps..

MCD Mortal kombat:Crippled by small Ram buffer and slow drive speeds...

More examples of the utter DROSS being served up:

SW:Rebel A.review..vastly over scored there.

Brutal, Star Wars Chess, Loadstar....all awful.

Second Samuari never appeared....

The oh-so average Soul Star...

Mega Race..more pre-rendered visuals streamed off CD...

Lawnmower Man-Pal version has NTSC code on disc, was withdrawn, thus hasd become RARE, even though game itself is utter sh*te-I still own my sealed copy :)

Pitfall..more enhanced Cart fodder....

Actually putting this together, i'm cracking up here...

Pitfall, Soul Star, Dragon's Lair...all games that never really did anything for the Sega CD, as weren't different enough to standard Genesis code, were old as the hills and linear, or just clones of Sega'coin'ops...yet Atari wanted ALL 3 for it's 64 bit system? Blimey.....

Again, i'm looking at these and it hits home that in certain genres, the Sega CD floored both the Jaguar and the Jaguar CD combined.

Platformers:Sega CD had:Batman Returns, Pitfall, Mickey Mania, Chuck Rock 2, Sonic CD, The Terminator SE and more to come.

Football Games:Sensible SoCcer, Fifa.

Side scrolling Beat-Em-Up's:The mighty Final Fight.

God Games:Powermonger over Baldies any day.

RPG's:Lunar, Eye Of The Beholder (something that never appeared even on the ST at the time) etc.

Adventure Games:Snatcher, Dune,

Last batch :)

And what a way the Mega CD went out..

More FMV Dross..

More tarted up Cart games...

EA trying to milk the Road Rash engine for every drop, now taking sprites and FMV from the 3DO version.

Neo-Geo Conversion.

Dissapointing use of the once stunning Batman returns Game Engine.

And lets not forget, at this point in time, Sega were trying to support:

Genesis, Game Gear, 32X, Sega CD and Saturn!!!!!

I would actually like to revist the Sega CD, just to play Eternal Champions SE, Dune, Terminator S.E, Batman Returns 3D sections, Battlecorps, Dune, Eye Of The Beholder, Lords Of Thunder, Shadow Run, Thunderhawk, Dungeon Master II etc...

Where as thewre's nothing on 32X, Jaguar CD i want to play, if we are comparing add-on for add-on.

I only own maybe 6 games for the SegaCD. Having said that, those 6 games are quite fun to play. Sonic CD is still probably the best of the classic Sonic formula. Dune I had both on PC and Sega CD, but the Sega CD version wins out for the added flying FMV sequences and speech that was missing from the PC version. Lunar...enough said...great RPG. VAY..again...lots of fun and excellent RPG. Wing Commander. I own pretty much all the Wing Commander games and it is funny because when I first saw the game listed for PC in magazines of the day, I had zero interest in it and thought it was crap. Until I borrowed the PC version from a friend of mine. And it quickly became one of my favorite games ever. That said, I also own the SNES releases of the game. The Sega CD is the best overall with the speech that the PC version never had. It does suffer from slowdown in many places and the graphics are...well..missing a ton of colors the PC version has. But, you still get all the missions and enemy craft plus the speech. I also own Rise of the Dragon, and again it is a lot of fun to play! I can't remember if there was a CD version of Rise for PCs with speech, but if not then Rise on SegaCD is the best version to play. I would also say Monkey Island and Willy Beamish as well, but they had PC CD releases with speech as well, so they are best on the PC.

The only other Sega CD game I own and didn't mention until now, is Stellar Fire. It is an okay game I guess, but I still prefer to fire up my actual copy of Stellar 7 and Nova 9 in DosBox.
