Faygo - Reviews & More

Yup. Had Vernors many times! And, if I am not mistaken, they even had a commercial starring Soupy Sales!

I remember bringing some Vernors with us on a family vacation back to Maine one summer (its where I was born and still have a lot of family out there). One of my friends fished one out of the cooler, was like "what's this," then about choked on it after he took a big swig  He wasn't prepared for that level of carbonation! He really enjoyed it though, and asked us to bring more next time we came out  :)

I still like Vernors, but I prefer Canada Dry when I want a ginger ale, so I don't drink it much anymore.

I want to ask you if it's any good, but I'll wait for the review :)

You might have to wait for my next trip up north!

What you see in the first pic is all I have available to review this time.

Have you ever had Dr. Faygo? Does it compare favorably to Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb?

Even though I'm a fan of both Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb, I've never tried Dr. Faygo. I'm not sure if it's a newer flavor or I just didn't see it a lot growing up.

Moon Mist Blue

I remember when Moutain Dew Code Red came out before the 27 different variations of Dew we have today. I was a big MD fan and was happy to try the Red. It took awhile for me to fully admit it, but I ended up like Red even better than the original, and that's saying something.

Well, guess what? Moon Mist Blue pulls a Code Red and far outshines regular Moon Mist. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it's a blueberry flavor they've added. And it tastes great! It's also the only flavor I saw this time around that I never saw before. It's not quite at Code Red level, but I'd gladly drink this one again.

I'm in New Buffalo right now (and will be heading back home soon). Faygo...was nowhere to be found. Although my wife said when I fuel up she'll go in and check for me. :)

In Michigan, I always have good luck at gas stations and Meijers!

For instance, I could only find the Moon Mist Blue at a Quality Dairy gas station.

Cotton Candy

I remember trying this a few years ago for the first time alongside Candy Apple. I was skeptical of both at first, but Candy Apple was a pleasant surprise. But wow! Is Cotton Candy good! It's amazing what they can do with chemicals these days! I don't know how to put it, except it is exactly how a Cotton Candy pop should be. Just the right amount of sweetness and after a sip, you really get the Cotton Candy taste. If you don't like cotton candy in general, you may not care for it, but as it is, THIS IS THE BEST COTTON CANDY SODA POP OUT THERE!!!!!

Where would you even find the cotton candy or candy apple flavors?

In Michigan, I found them in the 24oz bottles at gas stations and 2 Liters at Meijers.

I've notice eBay sellers selling them at inflated prices too.

Rock & Rye!

This one is sooo hard to describe, so I will quote the Faygo website:

A dreamy vanilla cream soda with just a kick of something that may or not be cherry. We’re not at liberty to disclose the ingredients actually. In fact, the recipe is so secret that it doesn’t exist. And yes, we know that makes absolutely no sense.

Simply put, this is a must for fans of cream sodas...or almost fans of pop in general. Not only is this my favorite Faygo, it may very well be my favorite pop of all time.

I never had a Faygo beverage before I saw Phil's post. I've seen the drinks sporadically around Chicago but never grabbed one. After reading No Swear Gamer's post, I wanted to try a few of 'em, but...sure as heck, when I WANT to drink one, I can't find one anywhere! Even when my wife and I went to New Buffalo, Michigan for Memorial Day weekend, Barney's supermarket didn't have it.

BUT...we did go back to New Buffalo this past weekend. Again, no Faygo at Barney's, but the variety store next door had a sale on it....except we weren't around during their business hours; on Friday night we arrived too late, and Saturday we were busy doing other things, BUT...on the way back to Chicago, we stopped at a Meijer's in Michigan City, Indiana, because my wife wanted to buy a butt-ton of Sweat Leaf Tea and not pay the Cook County sweetened beverage tax (which, thankfully, is going away in December). While she was busy emptying the store of Sweet Leaf, I went across the parking lot and filled up at Meijer's gas station...where they were selling Faygo drinks for 89 cents per 24-ounce bottle! I grabbed five different ones. Here are my thoughts (and the exclamation points are not mine - they're Faygo's):

Moon Mist - I didn't feel a zing like from Mountain Dew (despite the "With A Real Kick" notation on the label). The flavor is a bit more lemony than Mountain Dew. But this stuff is not Dew. Not even Mello Yello. If you're looking for Mountain Dew flavor, you'll be disappointed, but keep an open mind and expect a completely different drink and it can be enjoyable. So I'm using its unique and enjoyable NON-Dew flavor for my rating.
(Using Phil's scale) My rating: solid

Creme Soda! - could be better with a bit more sweetness; it's missing a bit of flavor.
My rating: meh

Cotton Candy - definitely the OPPOSITE of the creme soda: a bit TOO sweet, but in the end, it really does taste like cotton candy! If it had LESS sweetness, it wouldn't taste like cotton candy but more like a creme soda. So....because Faygo pulled off exactly what it advertised:
My rating: solid

(diet) Vanilla Creme Soda! - actually, pretty good for a diet drink. Bought this accidentally - I saw "Vanilla" and snagged it, mainly to see how it differed from the "Creme Soda" that didn't mention vanilla. If this weren't diet, it would be a great happy medium between Creme Soda and Cotton Candy, in terms of sweetness.
My rating: solid

Delicious Rock & Rye! - I didn't know the significance of the "rye" part...never heard that used to describe a soda before. Literally until when I opened it I thought it was Faygo's plain ol' cola or something because it looked black/dark brown, but when I took the bottle out of my backpack at work and was about to pour it over ice, I saw it was red. Then I saw on the label in small print that it's a "creme cola." Well, I got excited because I absolutely love me a good red creme soda. But I don't love this stuff. Same problem with the Creme Soda!: a tad under-sweet...in fact, this tasted more diet to me than the (diet) Vanilla Creme Soda!. I've had several other red cremes that were much more enjoyable, including A&W and A-Treat.
My rating: meh

Overall, I have to say, Faygo doesn't impress me. I still want to try the varieties I haven't tried (especially root beer), but...it seems they kind of miss the mark, which I guess is to be expected given that it's a budget drink. I do appreciate, however, that they correctly designate the "creme soda" as 'creme soda" and not "cream soda." What's the difference? Well, "cream," both by definition and by FDC law, implies that it's made from a dairy product; if it's not dairy, you use the "creme" (or, to be even more correct, "crème") spelling.

Supernatural, perhaps...baloney, perhaps not.

I'm sorry you didn't care for it as much as I, but I'm honored you gave it a try! I'm sure growing up with it helps appreciate the taste more. And of course, tastes can vary person to person. For instance, I never thought Pepsi was anything special.

Please note the Faygo 45rpm record in this month's Weird Paul Thrift Store Haul video:

Here's the song in commercial form:

(also, I have mixed feelings of Faygo being so tightly connected to ICP & the Juggalo culture, as WP alluded too. On one hand, it has given Faygo national exposure, but on the other hand, some uninformed people might consider it a drink for white thugs, when for years it was marketed to families and kids)

I believe that boat was from Boblo Island. a theme park local to Detroit, where you would actually have to take the boat to get there. The boat even had arcade games on it! Sadly, the park is no more.

BTW, I visited Michigan over the holidays and brought back more to taste test and review! (Including one just for Justin!)

Raspberry Blueberry

I can taste the raspberry, which is nice, more than the blueberry, but the sugary taste seems to overpower the fruitiness, which is a shame. Go for Moon Mist Blue instead. The gap between them is a lot larger than what my ranks show.
