Star Trek: Discovery

I know that there are at least a few Trek fans on the forum. What are your thoughts on Discovery?

I really enjoyed the first two episodes. I thought that the overall story, look and feel of the show were excellent. As a prequel to TOS, it is a little off style-wise (as was Enterprise) but the look suits the Kelvin timeline. It also looks like it will be serialized, which I enjoy.

My main complaint - and it's a biggie - is the requirement for a subscription to CBS All Access. At $5.99/mo. it is not terribly expensive but I really wish they had partnered with Hulu or Amazon Prime. Trust & believe that I will cancel when this is not on.

I also thought that the main character's connection with a character from TOS is a bit unnecessary.

Otherwise, two thumbs up!

I'm a huge Trek fan.

I only watched the first episode of Discovery and decided to pass.  To me, this seems more like a comic-book version of Trek.  It's very visually-oriented.  It looks spectacular.  But it doesn't look like Star Trek.

I also am not a big fan of the re-design of the Klingons.  That seems unnecessary to me.

And a smaller complaint, but still...is that everything seems just so different and even more advanced than TOS.  It's supposed to be set 10 years prior to TOS.  And I get it...it's the alternate timeline.  So I call this a small complaint.  It just gives it an unfamiliar feel.  Doesn't even feel like the new Abrams movies.

I do like the characters they came up with and especially the alien crew-member.  They also chose really good actors.  Production values are fantastic.  I'll say it again...it looks great.  Those are theater quality visuals.

But mostly, like you, I don't really have any desire for another monthly charge.  So that's really why I stopped at episode 1.  If it were free or on Netflix or some other service with more than just Star Trek (that I'd actually watch), I'd probably give it more of a chance.  But time is precious, as are funds.  I think they made a big mistake here.  It's probably going to end up being pirated like crazy, and I don't want anything to do with that.  Maybe when it comes out on blu-ray I'll give it a go.

@RickR - I didn't mind the redesign of the Klingons as much as I thought I would. It was similar to how I felt as a kid when the design first changed in The Motion Picture and was refined further in Search For Spock. Basically, I accept them as Klingons as much as I still accept TOS Klingons. (Aside - I loved the ENT Season 4 explanation of why TOS Klingons didn't have ridges!)

As you said, production quality was very high and nears movie quality. This would be great on the big screen! Personally, I find it more "Trek" than the JJ movies and I'm willing to keep going. I imagine that they wanted to start off with a big and will slow down a bit in subsequent episodes to let the characters develop.

RE - the Klingons -- It bothers me mostly because they've changed the Klingons already a couple of times as you said.  Why do it again?  I can't think of a good reason for it.  I loved that episode of Enterprise too!  And the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribblations" with the Worf line:  "We don't talk about it with outsiders."  Awesome!

I think I should say my complaints are mostly minor in my mind.  If it was free or on Netflix, I'd watch it.

I did get to watch it in my phone as I still have internet/cable/phone at home.  No matter how big the phone screen is, not the same.  I plan to rewatch once the services are reconnected (hopefully on Sunday).  I have been a Trek fan since I'm 12 and I've seen every incarnation of Star Trek I can watch.  This is certainly another take on Trek and one that clearly does not skimp on budget.  I think this is the first time Star Trek has been designed with a high budget for TV.  Not even the days of TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT compare.

I thought the story was interesting enough to keep my attention but the first two episodes are more of a prologue to the story.  The goal was to establish Michael's character.  I wish the Klingons had not been redesigned so much.  If they had hair like they did since the movies, the redesign would not be as difficult to swallow.  Despite that, the behavior is pretty much the Klingons we have come to expect.

As for timeline, this is in the Prime timeline and they have said it multiple times.  I supposed the updated look is to be expected.  It is 2017 and not 1966.  I don't think non-fans would watch if it had a 60's look to it and their goal is to bring new fans into Star Trek.

I will keep watching.  I am annoyed at having to pay for it but right now I'm using the credit I have from the Google Surveys I do to pay for it.

🖖 Going to the final frontier, gaming...

Episode 7 was one of the best yet! It was a time loop episode that recalled of the TNG Classic "Cause and Effect." Rainn Wilson made his second appearance as Harry Mudd and he looked like he was having the time of his life. The character relationships continue to develop. All and all, it was a really enjoyable and very "trek" hour of TV.

Episode 11 was great! Just fantastic! This show could stay in the mirror universe the rest of season and I wouldn't be mad. I'm glad that they are wrapping the plot threads and confirming some fan theories. I saw the Georgiou twist coming but I loved how they pulled it off. Only four episodes left. The big question: What is Lorca up to?
