Video Game Mascots interest me. The are designed to sell games, but they don't always succeed. Usually they appear in games, but not always. So I decided to take a look at the best and worst of the bunch.

Here's my choices for the four best:

What are your thoughts? What mascots were the best and worst in your opinion?

First thought is that Atari could have used a mascot.  Pac-Man maybe, but they kept changing his presentation in marketing materials.

Nintendo did a great job with mascots.  They were (and are) the masters.

Yes Nintendo has done a great job. Like a Beauty Queen, if Mario ever had to step down for unforeseen reasons, I could see anyone from Link to Samus to Kirby to a bunch of others step up and take the roll, and do it better than most.

Funny story: When I had a 7800 growing up, I actually thought Pac-Man was the Atari mascot, since he was so well known and at the time, he wasn't on the NES or Master System. (I didn't know about the Intellivision version until much later)

He would have made a great mascot.  Imagine little tip bubbles with Pac Man in subsequent manuals.  Or even just a little Pac Man in the corner of each box.  Unfortunately, we just got a bunch of very differently themed images that never took advantage of what they had.

Why were they so intent on adding feet?

The best mascot Atari never had was Bentley Bear.  They should have used him more!

Or that Dig Dug guy.  They could have called him "Doug".

Atari didn't have great mascots in their IP as their arcade games were not really character driven. Most of what we recall as great characters were from licensed or third party games. Aside from Bentley Bear and Charlie Chuck, I can't think of anything from Atari that comes anywhere near mascot territory. During the Jaguar era, Atari Corp. wanted to do a Major Havoc update and use that character as a mascot.

I agree with the Top 4.

In the Flop 4 List could be place for Bubsy and Commander ROM for the Phillips G7000/ Odyssey 2.
