Atari Creep

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

Recently acquired one WITH the voice mod and as I wait for an A/V cable to show up looking for must haves on the system. I am mainly into arcade ports and the like, ESPECIALLY shooters.

This is what I have so far for games:

-Super Demon Attack

-Alpiner

-Parsec

-Chisholm Trail

New to 8 bit computing (I think this is a 16 bit machine but whatever?) and any help from YOU kats is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you can find them, the Amiga joysticks are rather comfortable and work well.

I only have three games for mine.  Parsec (which has voice through the voice attachment), Burgertime, and Treasure Island.  Parsec is considered one of the better games on the system.  If you like Space Invaders the TI has a really good port called TI Invaders.  Burgertime is good but the game has a flaw that I find annoying.  The in game music plays while you are moving around but when you walk across any part of the hamburger the music stops.  That's not what I find annoying.  Once the burger piece falls or you stop walking across it the music starts again but from the very beginning instead of starting where it left off.  That's the only thing about it I don't like.

The TI is not a bad system but I have not tried to dig too much into it to find out what all it has to offer.  Mine rarely gets used.  Even for a 16-bit computer the Atari 8-bits actually blow the TI out of the water.  It does have good graphics and sounds, though.  I'll give it that.

Check this out.  I'm going to order one for myself.  The TI joysticks suck.

(EDIT:  I just ordered one)

Did ya pick up the case for it too? Looks cool, I too ordered one! Thanks for the heads up.

I didn't pick up the case yet, although I put the listing on my "watch list".  I figured I'd try out the board first.

I do already have the Amiga sticks.  They are just ok IMO.  The sticks are very tiny, but they do respond well.  I think using an Atari joystick will be ideal.  I also have a converter to use Atari sticks on the Odyssey 2.  Once you've tried the best, you can't go back to those other sticks B)

The TI also has a very lively homebrew scene.  There's a yearly meeting "FestWest NW" coming up this Saturday in Vancouver, WA.

It's a computer with some quirks.  The multiplexer-driven memory is probably the biggest fault.  Also, the complexity of adding anything other than a tape-drive for storage is a turn off.  Luckily, most of the software available is on cartridge.

But overall, it's fun.  There are a lot of very unique games.  Parsec and Alpiner stand out.  The talking version of "Super Demon Attack" (on disk or the multi-cart) is outstanding...probably the best version of Demon Attack on any system.

For people who just want to be gamers and not get the TIPI unit to go with a RPi 3 expansion for the TI-99/4A, the next two items are a most and go together like Milk and Cookies...
