Marjac Romscanner VGA 10

Atari Creep

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. A buddy of mine from down under picked one of these up recently and was asking about it. I know all about the more common Video Game Brain but have never seen one of these. Aside from a few online reviews/articles and 1 guy on AA that got one for $2 somewhere I can't find anything on an approx value.

My buddy owns a retro game shop there in Australia and wants to know a fair price to mark it as.

Any ideas? I said if it works around $100 USD should do it seeing that the Brain is about $75 average right now. I could be way off though.

Atari 2600 (dot) com has a price list of practically everything 2600 related.  The item you mention is in that list.  If it works and is in its box with all paperwork and any inserts it's worth $46.33, loose it's worth $37.28.  That's in US dollars so in Australia currency, at the current rate of exchange, a used ROMSCANNER is worth $52 AUD and one in its box is worth $59 AUD.

It looks to be in good condition.  I would set a price between $65 - $75.  Then if they need to mark it down for any kind of sale, like a 10% weekend sale for example, they will still make market value for the item.  Your suggestion of $100 would help them cover overhead should the item sit for a while before being sold.

For reference:  http://www.atari2600.com/priceguide/  (Scroll to the bottom of the list to find the ROMSCANNER values.  That list is a bit dated as it was last updated in July 2012.)

That's the best I could come up with.  Hope it helps.

I also have a ROM scanner myself. It is a different model, not from Marjac. You use it (I am sure you know this) to plug in multiple cartridges. Then, they would all fit in the main cartridge port of the A2600. With a push of a button, switch between games and never have to take them out as much from the main port. Handy item, but I hear that they can be buggy. But, they do work. The only other system that I have seen a ROM scanner for was for the NES at Toys 'R' Us. I was about thirteen years old then. That ROM scanner for the NES is extremely rare, by the way.

I never seen a ROM scanner for the standard issue NES before but did see a stand alone unit with 12 games in it at Wal-Mart years ago. Is that what you are talking about?

Well, yes. What I thought was a ROM scanner for the NES, anyway. Extremely rare stuff. It probably ran about twelve games. That sounds about right. It probably runs on a similar principle. Perhaps. :)

Perhaps. Would like to have the NES ROMscanner but those things are very hard to come by. I believe they were only sold to stores selling NES games at the time. It was never commercially available. Bummer. The ROMScanner for a VCS would be cool, too.

The ROMscanner is definitely worth more than a Video Game Brain.  The VGB's were much more common here in the U.S. (K-Mart used to sell those) - probably the most common of all the different makes and models (Game Selex and Videoplexer were 2 others):

There's another price guide site, but it only lists software:
