Welcome to our 46th Squad Challenge! This time we're playing the Nintendo release of Tetris for the NES. I was temped to go with Tetris for Game Boy, we might do that another time. Should Atari have found a way to bring Atari arcade Tetris home to the Atari 7800? Oh, what could have been! Tetris on the NES and Game Boy became some of the most iconic games of the 8-bit era. Let's see how far you can get. Enjoy!

:nintendo_snes:  NOTE: Sometime in December we will be playing our first SNES game in a Squad Challenge. Get ready!

Oh man!  I've been playing a lot of Tetris on the original DMG-01 Game Boy lately.  I'm not very good at it...but it's so dang fun.  I'll have to see if we have the  NES cart.  If not, emulation on the Wii should be fine.

Good choice!  I'll be joining in for sure.

Tetris on any system is the only game I have found that no matter how much the game causes frustration you keep going back for more. Once I start to play this game I have a really hard time putting it down. I have to force myself to stop but I could literally play this game for days without sleep and without realizing it. I had this on a CoCo 3 cart and could not stop. That was my first encounter with Tetris. The GB got it followed by the NES and ... Yea...not a good thing for me lol.

Hmmmm Wonder what it could be. Need to get a new GC controller for that one whatever it is, I only play SNES on my Wii.

As far as Tetris, yup I am in. Again, playing on my Wii.

***NOTE****

One of my little ones is showing some interest so I may be posting 2 sets of scores!!!!!!!!!  :spot:

I thought I was recording when I got my number one high score in the video but I didn't even get a snapshot.  For some reason I thought I hit the record button on my camera but ... yea ... technical glitch.  So I am submitting my second high score shown in the last portion of the video.

51,813 Points

Enjoy the video.  I plan to do more Tetris game play videos.  Played on real hardware.

wow i suck a lot then.

Nah bro. It's not about that anyway. Normally in these I rank in the bottom 3 ALWAYS!!!! Mainly because I love playing games but I have never been a wiz at a lot of them. This game just so happens to be one I played a ridiculous amount and turns out I almost have what it takes to be decent at it.

I look at these challenges as more a personal challenge  an not so much against others. Sure it would be nice to be a leader but that is not going to happen for me with many games. I challenge myself to learn the game more and better my skills within it. If I improve over time then I met the challenge. Don't mean to preach!!!

KEEP JAMMING BRO!!!!!

No you do not!

I have not played yet, but I have some tips to help.  The way to higher scores is to get 4 lines to clear at once (or 3 or 2).  Don't do 1 line unless absolutely necessary.  Square blocks go all the way to the left.  Leave the right-most slot empty.  Build everything up...then when you get the long skinny piece, put it in the slot on the right!  BOOM!  If you do it right, you'll clear multiple lines. The key is using that long skinny piece correctly.  Remember that, it's the most important tip of them all.

I gathered this intel by watching a Tetris World Championship at PRGE last year.  It was incredible.  Those guys can play the game until the final level!  And oh man, it takes split-second timing once you get up there.

Once you see those kind of players in action, you realize you will never be that good.  But that's ok, the game is still incredibly fun.  And I learned a lot by watching them.

The whole idea is just to have fun! You don't suck. You are doing good for someone that never plays the game much. Keep plugging away at it. I'm no pro at Tetris but there is something about Tetris that makes it hard to stop playing. The game will often feel like its against you. Show it who's boss! And just have fun!! That's all video games are about.

HA!  Game tells lies.  See what it says?

"You are a Tetris Master."

Blah.  Anyone that can do anything with this game is a Tetris Master.  It takes a lot of concentration to play this game on it's slow speeds.  At its core it is a thinking game because you have one piece falling you have to figure out where to place PLUS you have to plan ahead where the NEXT piece can go.  Then you get your NEXT piece you thought you knew where it could go but your new NEXT piece would fit that place better.  So now you have to figure out where the current piece would fit best.  It's a constant battle and causes lots of insecurities LOL.  Basically you will find yourself battling against your own thoughts trying to place these pieces because time has no meaning in this game.  It doesn't exist.  And the real world will disappear while you play.  That's the Tetris Trance!

And just for an FYI, the history of this game is an amazing mess.  If you have never watched it, be sure to go to YouTube and check out Gaming Historian's Story of Tetris.  It's a long video but the history is rather amazing.  It's a wonder any one console or computer ever got this game.

I have found a very interesting phenomenon that happens here, with me anyway. I have yet to be able to come even close to my first high scores. LOL I complete the same amount of levels, same play style and yet I am averaging half my original posted scores. LOL

Anyone else experiencing this?
