How do you make an atari 5200 better? well you make it backwards compatible with the 2600 of course! Having picked up a boxed 2600 vcs adapter for $20.00 usd i promptly took it apart and gave it a good cleaning.the cartridge slot was so gunked up with dust and the contacts were all green. I restored it too like new and popped it in my system, it has played flawlessly for 6 years now, and never glitched once. The sound and the picture are sublime, really enjoy not having to pull out my Sunnyvale (heavy Sixer) to play 2600 games! I am curious as to whether the picture and sound quality are enhanced in some way, being run thru the 5200.

Does any other member have one? And what are your thoughts and story's upon buying your vcs adapter. This is my first time to write in this forum ,other then comments on others post .And would really enjoy some feedback on this awsome peice of Atari goodness. Cheer's

I have two, one I think from Ebay but the other from a Atariage member with more skill then I because it works as intended OR you can use it as a standalone 2600 compatible!

I think the cartridge adaptor fad is a weird footnote in history. It started with Coleco being smartasses and releasing their 2600 adapter for the ColecoVision. Which was a genius move for them, it allowed people to move up to a new system without giving up their 2600 library. After that it was like everyone had to have an adapter. Intellivision 2 had one and of course the 5200. By that point it was almost like plugging a 2600 motherboard into the cartridge slot of the 5200 and letting it mooch. It's not just the idea of cross-compatibility between rival consoles that we'll never see anymore, it's a ridiculous idea of plugging a PS3 into a PS4 and calling it an adapter. Weird fads are driven by the geniuses in marketing, never forget that.

MaximumRD - that looks like a cool setup. Do you ever have any fear of powering that sucker on? It looks like a hell of a mod like it would feel a little dangerous  ;)

Hey nope works great to this day and I've full confidence in the mod done by someone much more skilled then myself lol.

Dr. Octa -- Hard to avoid DeLorean comparisons in these forums eh?

Rob -- You always post the best videos, man! Your standalone VCS adapter simply put is a work of art. Tim should be extremely proud!

Seeing the cartridge adapter as its own console reminds me of the TurboGrafx-16 without the rear clamshell.

Somebody should make one for playing 7800 games on a 5200 or 5200 games on a 7800. It could play Atari 8bit computer games on 7800 too, the hardware should be close enough to make something like hat doable I would think. I'm no expert tho, anybody want to way in?

After reading this post I could have sworn I had read about a 7800 adapter for the 5200 before

I had to do some looking but I found it: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/167048-atari-7800-adaptor-for-atari-5200-at-pax-east/

turns out there was a working prototype and everything!

I'll never understand why Atari made the 5200 so freaking BIG.

Their marketing geniuses determined "Bigger was better". They instructed Regan Cheng to design a massive pizza box. ColecoVision and TurboGrafx-16 are other good examples of this puzzling marketing decision. Though neither were massive in size, they were both much, much larger than their guts needed them to be. Compare the Japanese PC Engine with its American counterpart the TurboGrafx-16. It's twice as wide, and there's nothing inside but air. Marketing thought Americans wouldn't take the PC Engine seriously unless it was much more substantial in size. This was the decision with the original Lynx as well.
