I heard the second type with the two controller ports is the better option from what I've seen.

I agree with this.  4 port is painful to hook up with that crazy switchbox it has.  2 port can use the same screw-in RF adapter we use for most of our other old systems.

In addition to being easier to hook up, you can use the VCS adapter with all 2-port models. Only the rare "asterisk" 4-port models will work with the adapter. You do lose compatibility with Pitfall! and Mountain King with the 2-port unless you swap out the BIOS chip.

You know, I must be the only Atari person that has not had issues with the 5200 4-port sparking when being connected to the switchbox.  Then again I did follow the instructions saying to plug the AC Adapter into the wall last.   :D  Then again I am probably only one of a handful of kids at the time that actually enjoyed the reading material as much as the system and games themselves.
