One of our favorite podcasts has a new episode online! This week's episode is about The Blob, the 1958 independently made horror/scifi film directed by Irvin Yeaworth and starring a 27 year-old Steve McQueen.

The film's plot depicts a growing corrosive alien amoeba that crashes from outer space in a meteorite and engulfs and dissolves citizens in the small community of Downingtown, Pennsylvania. The origin of "The Blob" is never identified, and the film ends with a question mark.

The film was originally titled The Molten Meteor until producers overheard screenwriter Kay Linaker refer to the movie's monster as "The Blob." McQueen received only $3,000 for this film; he had turned down an offer for a smaller up-front sum with ten percent of the profits, because he did not think the movie would make any money and he needed the money immediately to pay for food and rent. The Blob ended up grossing $4 million.

The film's tongue-in-cheek title song was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David and became a nationwide hit in the U.S. The background score for The Blob was composed by Ralph Carmichael. It was one of just a few film scores that Carmichael wrote. Carmichael is best known for his musical associations with Billy Graham and for arranging The Magic of Christmas for Nat King Cole.

The Blob was released on October 12, 1958 by Paramount Pictures as a double feature with the movie I Married a Monster from Outer Space.

On this episode of the show I talk about the horror classic, “The Blob”. I starts off by discussing the way that different generations can enjoy the same things and still feel nostalgia for those things, just in different ways, then I move on to the subject of our show. I talk about the cast, the crew, Steve McQueen’s bad reputation, the plot, what that goop was made from, the “sequel”, the remake and much much more.

Music on the show was provided by Peachy (the Burt Bacharach of Wales), if you have musical needs, why not contact and “like” him on his Facebook Page.

If you have a moment please stop by iTunes or wherever you might download the show and perhaps give the show a quick rating. It is very much appreciated.

If you have any suggestions for topics you would like for me to cover in the future, email them to me at retroist@retroist.com. If you would like more retro fun, you can also follow me on the Twitter and on the Facebook.
