Hey guys! I am just your average Retro Gaming fan! Grew up with the Intellivision, Commodore 64 and Atari 2600. Still love to collect and play and I also have a YouTube channel called Brian's Man Cave where I show off and play Retro consoles and games My buds The Atari Creep, The No Swear Gamer and ArcadeUSA often mention t his forum on their channels, so I decided to hop on board. Here is my latest video about The Atari Creep:

    RockyRaccoon

    Greetings! Hello! Salutations!

I'm new around here! My name is 'Dan' but I go by the online moniker 'Rocky Raccoon'. I've been collecting since about my teen years. I am currently 34. I like collecting a heck of a whole lot, and have a varied collection of consoles. My favorite era is probably the mid eighties, onwards. The first two machines I ever played on we're an Atari 2600 in my dad's basement on a B&W TV, and my Dad's Commodore 64. My favorite retrogame series is The Fantasy Zone series of games. I was first introduced to collecting through a dear old friend back in MA, USA, and have been in the hobby since. I've been learning to get into the technical side of the hobby-- learning to fix consoles-- diagnose problems and fix them, though I still have a long ways to go-- though I do have a background in electronic schematic reading thanks to CAD courses I took in high school that have generally helped me a bunch there. I learned about this place primarily through the NoSwearGamer on Youtube where this place was mentioned once in a while, and decided to come check it out. I also hang around AtariAge with the same user name.

True Story, back in the day I rented from a store that had an amazing selection of games, I rented Tengen Tetris one day, loved it, a week later I returned to rent it again, I could not find it, I asked the clerk, he said pointed to the Nintendo Tetris, I was thrown off at first and said "Er, no, I don't think that is the one, the one I rented was not made by Nintendo". Long story short, he denied they had, OR EVER HAD any other version, even me clearly stating you DID because I rented it, he was trying (for some reason) to cover so hard "Are you sure it was HERE you rented it?", he absolutely would not budge on it, insisted they never had any other version so I just dropped it. Only years later, when I would come to read articles and info in magazines etc, would I learn the story of TENGEN TETRIS and TENGEN themselves, now I still do not know WHY exactly this occurred, maybe the clerk bought (or stole?) the TENGEN version because he had learned that TENGEN would have to pull sales? Maybe the store was ordered to PULL the game off their shelf? But in either of those cases WHY claim they NEVER had it in the first place? So whatever the reason I can only suspect wrong doing on the clerk or store managers part because of their behavior acting like they were never in possession of the game, like it was some highly illegal item like plutonium or something 😜. Anyways, carry on, was not my intention to disrupt this thread but all this talk about TETRIS, OFFICIAL, TENGEN etc, just brought back that silly memory that comes back whenever I hear the TENGEN name lol. FEEL FREE TO MOVE THIS to OFF TOPIC or perhaps WEIRD STORIES under CLASSIC GAMING or something.......CARRY ON GUYS. πŸ˜†πŸ˜ŽπŸ»

    Jeopardy

Is anyone else besides me swept up in James-mania? In case you haven't heard, the current champ is obliterating the Jeopardy record books. After 9 games, he already owns the top 3 single day earnings records. He's a machine. Ken Jennings holds the total earnings record in 74 games. James is on pace to break that record somewhere in the 20 game range. It's like Jordan, Tiger & Ruth in their primes, all rolled into one. Here's the first time he broke it (he's done it two more times & I have a feeling he's not done yet):

    New (to me) Car

When I was out of town for the holidays, I left my car parked with my soon to be ex-wife at the house. Living downtown now, I can't leave it in the same space for more than a day or two. I figure, I still own (and pay for) the driveway, right? She drove it and parked it overnight at a Christmas party where it got sideswiped. The driver didn't leave a note so I had to make a claim under insurance. If it were a normal car, it would've been a fix of about $4,000, but because it was an EV (a LEAF) there are special battery handling requirements that made it a total loss. I was shocked, frankly. So I went a month without a car. I live close to work and bike a lot so it wasn't horrible but getting across town on transit or out to LA or Orange County was a pain. And then there's the rain. So last weekend, after 8 years of driving a zero emission vehicle, I returned to the dark side of fossil fuel with this gently used MINI Cooper S 4-door. The MINI has 189HP and was the closest thing I could find with the zippiness and immediacy of an EV. I will really have to watch my speed though as I keep blowing past 80 without feeling it. They actually have a "speed warning" that you can set to your MPH of choice. It's currently on 90. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Anyway, a week in and I'm really loving it. It's decidedly retro with chrome toggle switches everywhere and bonnet stripes. It has super tight handling and is a dream on the freeway. It might be too much fun, really. Aside from the red, it's not exactly a midlife crisis car but it's as close as I am likely to get.

Congratulations RadioPoultry! Congratulations @RadioPoultry on an excellent run! Super Mario Land is possibly one of the most important killer aps of all time, which along with Tetris helped launch the Game Boy to stratospheric dominance. For many of us this was the first Mario sequel we got to play, and we really loved joining Mario in a new adventure of ancient ruins, giant crabs, flying stone heads and strange creatures! I can never see the stone heads of Easter Island without thinking of playing this game out by the pool. Super Mario Land was our first GameBoy Squad Challenge, as well as our first Single-Life Run. I wasn't sure if we'd have a good turnout for our first Game Boy game, it was great to see so many of you jump in on this Challenge! @RadioPoultry won the Squad Challenge with a high score of 198,500. @Kid A was right on his tail with an incredible 181,390. @atarilbc brought his A-Game with his Lunchtime Unwinds, posting a high score of 87,510. @ThatBuffGamer posted an impressive 69,340. I showed up with @kamakazi20012, @Atari Creep and @RickR to post our best! Congrats to everyone who played! I'd encourage RadioPoultry to post his new high score on the Scoreboard, and maybe this Challenge can continue on! Our next Squad Challenge will be for the Atari ST. 2019 will be changing it up in High Score Squad with new challenges for Lynx, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Atari ST, Jaguar, 5200, TurboGrafx-16, Intellivision, ColecoVision, Game Boy and much much more, in addition to the usual lineup of video game systems. We may even have an Arcade challenge! Be ready to play all of these game systems, we'll be breaking new ground with more interesting Squad Challenges coming up very soon and throughout the year, and we hope to see you there. Hi Guys - thanks so much for the support and kind words. I finally got around to joining the forums - just wanted to provide you a brief update on this project - I have a few of the Robotron controllers available here: retrogameboyz.com - it's just my eBay listings. I have lots of parts and try to assemble a few each day. https://www.ebay.com/sch/retrogameboyz/m.html Check my feedback and let me know what you think. I offer 30 day free returns if you are unsatisfied for any reason, so you can't lose. Even if you want to try it out and decide that it's not exactly what you wanted etc. I have sold about 700 controllers since March 2018. I constantly improving things and making different configurations. I recently started 3D Printing others some as those I have sold to wanted more customization. I do take requests as well. I am on v3 of the case and v1.2 of the boards - so far the units I have tested seem promising. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again! Here is the Robotron controller Demonstration:

    Ch...ch...ch...changes

I have been MIA lately due to some major life changes. My wife and I are separating after 15 years and I just recently moved on my own. This all came as a shock to me. I also took on a promotion at work in late August. Between everything going on I've taken a break from gaming to reflect and heal. I'm in a studio loft downtown, so I'm a bit space challenged and will probably not have a rig for awhile. The new TV doesn't have inputs for legacy connections so I'll be getting a Retrotink for composite and S Video. Will post my rig when it's setup. The one thing I'm really pumped on is the loft (space aside). I can now walk to work and I have some pretty amazing views. I didn't ask for a midlife crises but I'm trying to make the most of it. Wanted to share this sunrise photo from this morning. Happy holidays to the Atari.io community! I'll see you in 2019!

Post a photo or video of your score in this thread. Scores must be achieved between May 1st through May 14th, 2019. Screen captures are not allowed as they are easily manipulated for falsified scores. Multiple submissions are permitted. The player with the highest score at the end of the competition is the victor! ELIGIBILITY: Anyone can join in. All players are welcome! PLAY RULES: Games may be played on real hardware, Flashback or emulation, using any controller or keyboard, following rules and game settings as delineated in the Squad Challenge. The use of multiple controllers is allowed in this challenge. Enhancements, rewinds and hacked versions of this game are not allowed. DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Speed 3, Single Life Run. Speed 3 is the next-to-fastest play speed for this game. Please take note that Speed 3 on the Overlay is actually BUTTON 1 on the Controller itself. It's weird and confusing that they would do this, especially given how often players lost their overlays. SINGLE LIFE RUN: You are only allowed ONE LIFE to achieve your high score in this Squad Challenge. FAIR PLAY: Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! Falsified scores will result in your immediate removal from the site. It goes without saying that no use of cheats, hacks, cartridge frying, enhancements, rewinds, Photoshop, subterfuge, or any other unfair advantage is allowed. Everybody hates a cheater. Hi there...

New here, obviously. Saw the posts on Twitter and followed. Didn't realize it was a forum until I saw the post about the chat and decided to check it out. Thought, "Oh, they're doing a TurboGrafx R-Type scoring thing... I wanna put in a score." πŸ˜ƒ I'm in the East Texas area, about two hours East of Dallas. Been playing video games since my family first got a pong clone in the late 70s/early 80s. Been collecting for about 25 years or so, but still don't have a huge collection. Too many consoles, too many games, not enough money. The usual. Been member of the AtariAge forums for about ten years. Figured I'd branch out some. Pic is of me at the National Videogame Museum in Frisco Texas. It's a great place to visit if you're in the Dallas area.

Here's pics of my Intellivision stuff... Got all of this from a coworker. It was literally one of those, "Look what I found in my mom's attic" kind of deals. He tried selling it all to a local game store, but didn't like their offer then he came to me. I told him he should have come to me first. lol I offered him $50 and he accepted. Then I found out that I could only get $40 out as cash at the register, so I told him I'd owe him the other 10 and he said not to worry about it. The $40 was already over twice what the game store offered him. πŸ˜ƒ (Sorry the pics aren't that great... need to take updated ones. These are on my old apartment's kitchen floor and the dark color tile wasn't a good choice for a background.)

    Restoring a Big Trak

I just purchased a Milton Bradley Big Trak on ebay. It was in broken/parts/as-is condition. The price was right, and I thought it would be fun to try and restore it. For those that are unfamiliar -- the Big Trak was an electronically programmable toy vehicle from 1982. More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Trak I always wanted one, thanks to commercials like this: I thought I could skip the apple and deliver a beer to my father. Alas, the budget would never allow for this purchase. Until now! Well, the Big Trak arrived yesterday. As advertised, in pretty sad shape. Lots of dirt and grime, a broken battery terminal, and worst of all, a broken front axle. So I immediately got busy. I took apart the wheels and applied some epoxy to that broken axle. Everything removed got washed. Next steps are to take the top off and see what's going on with the electronics. And replace that battery terminal. I've got mixed expectations. I think at the low end, I may end up with a Big Trak that is cosmetically good, but doesn't work. I'd be ok with that...it will look great on a shelf. Best case, I get it fully working. The main body section, not yet opened: Broken battery connector: Fixing Axel Foley. Using a lot of epoxy will make it stronger, and it will still fit in it's slot. Removed parts have been washed.

I appreciate all of the support. I know things could be a lot worse and there are a lot of positives. I'm just throwing myself into my work, getting back in shape (20 down, 15 lbs to goal!), playing guitar and reconnecting with friends. Oddly, my twenty year-old daughter and I haven't been this close since she was a pre-teen. It's been cool to spend time together. I went back to my hometown of Columbus, OH over the holidays and it was just the recharge that I needed. It can only get better from here. A quick retro gaming story from my trip. My buddy of 28 years took me to a barcade in north Columbus for some pinball and games. We went to a Ms. Pac-man and about 8 minutes in to my play, he was like "I mean, I know you are into this stuff but I didn't know you were this good. Do you think that you'd die before I can grab us another round?" LOL! Even with the blue "Tron" concoctions I was drinking I left with the high score. It wasn't terribly high; I think they must turn off the machines. I'll take it anyway. πŸ˜‚ @RickR has it right; its sunrise in Long Beach, CA. Also known as "The LBC." As in, "atariLBC." I moved here in my early twenties and it's truly home now. Again, thanks everyone and I hope each of you had a merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
