Hey guys! I am just your average Retro Gaming fan! Grew up with the Intellivision, Commodore 64 and Atari 2600. Still love to collect and play and I also have a YouTube channel called Brian's Man Cave where I show off and play Retro consoles and games My buds The Atari Creep, The No Swear Gamer and ArcadeUSA often mention t his forum on their channels, so I decided to hop on board. Here is my latest video about The Atari Creep:

    RockyRaccoon

    Greetings! Hello! Salutations!

I'm new around here! My name is 'Dan' but I go by the online moniker 'Rocky Raccoon'. I've been collecting since about my teen years. I am currently 34. I like collecting a heck of a whole lot, and have a varied collection of consoles. My favorite era is probably the mid eighties, onwards. The first two machines I ever played on we're an Atari 2600 in my dad's basement on a B&W TV, and my Dad's Commodore 64. My favorite retrogame series is The Fantasy Zone series of games. I was first introduced to collecting through a dear old friend back in MA, USA, and have been in the hobby since. I've been learning to get into the technical side of the hobby-- learning to fix consoles-- diagnose problems and fix them, though I still have a long ways to go-- though I do have a background in electronic schematic reading thanks to CAD courses I took in high school that have generally helped me a bunch there. I learned about this place primarily through the NoSwearGamer on Youtube where this place was mentioned once in a while, and decided to come check it out. I also hang around AtariAge with the same user name.

True Story, back in the day I rented from a store that had an amazing selection of games, I rented Tengen Tetris one day, loved it, a week later I returned to rent it again, I could not find it, I asked the clerk, he said pointed to the Nintendo Tetris, I was thrown off at first and said "Er, no, I don't think that is the one, the one I rented was not made by Nintendo". Long story short, he denied they had, OR EVER HAD any other version, even me clearly stating you DID because I rented it, he was trying (for some reason) to cover so hard "Are you sure it was HERE you rented it?", he absolutely would not budge on it, insisted they never had any other version so I just dropped it. Only years later, when I would come to read articles and info in magazines etc, would I learn the story of TENGEN TETRIS and TENGEN themselves, now I still do not know WHY exactly this occurred, maybe the clerk bought (or stole?) the TENGEN version because he had learned that TENGEN would have to pull sales? Maybe the store was ordered to PULL the game off their shelf? But in either of those cases WHY claim they NEVER had it in the first place? So whatever the reason I can only suspect wrong doing on the clerk or store managers part because of their behavior acting like they were never in possession of the game, like it was some highly illegal item like plutonium or something 😜. Anyways, carry on, was not my intention to disrupt this thread but all this talk about TETRIS, OFFICIAL, TENGEN etc, just brought back that silly memory that comes back whenever I hear the TENGEN name lol. FEEL FREE TO MOVE THIS to OFF TOPIC or perhaps WEIRD STORIES under CLASSIC GAMING or something.......CARRY ON GUYS. 😆😎🍻

    Jeopardy

Is anyone else besides me swept up in James-mania? In case you haven't heard, the current champ is obliterating the Jeopardy record books. After 9 games, he already owns the top 3 single day earnings records. He's a machine. Ken Jennings holds the total earnings record in 74 games. James is on pace to break that record somewhere in the 20 game range. It's like Jordan, Tiger & Ruth in their primes, all rolled into one. Here's the first time he broke it (he's done it two more times & I have a feeling he's not done yet):

    New (to me) Car

When I was out of town for the holidays, I left my car parked with my soon to be ex-wife at the house. Living downtown now, I can't leave it in the same space for more than a day or two. I figure, I still own (and pay for) the driveway, right? She drove it and parked it overnight at a Christmas party where it got sideswiped. The driver didn't leave a note so I had to make a claim under insurance. If it were a normal car, it would've been a fix of about $4,000, but because it was an EV (a LEAF) there are special battery handling requirements that made it a total loss. I was shocked, frankly. So I went a month without a car. I live close to work and bike a lot so it wasn't horrible but getting across town on transit or out to LA or Orange County was a pain. And then there's the rain. So last weekend, after 8 years of driving a zero emission vehicle, I returned to the dark side of fossil fuel with this gently used MINI Cooper S 4-door. The MINI has 189HP and was the closest thing I could find with the zippiness and immediacy of an EV. I will really have to watch my speed though as I keep blowing past 80 without feeling it. They actually have a "speed warning" that you can set to your MPH of choice. It's currently on 90. 😂😂😂 Anyway, a week in and I'm really loving it. It's decidedly retro with chrome toggle switches everywhere and bonnet stripes. It has super tight handling and is a dream on the freeway. It might be too much fun, really. Aside from the red, it's not exactly a midlife crisis car but it's as close as I am likely to get.

Congratulations RadioPoultry! Congratulations @RadioPoultry on an excellent run! Super Mario Land is possibly one of the most important killer aps of all time, which along with Tetris helped launch the Game Boy to stratospheric dominance. For many of us this was the first Mario sequel we got to play, and we really loved joining Mario in a new adventure of ancient ruins, giant crabs, flying stone heads and strange creatures! I can never see the stone heads of Easter Island without thinking of playing this game out by the pool. Super Mario Land was our first GameBoy Squad Challenge, as well as our first Single-Life Run. I wasn't sure if we'd have a good turnout for our first Game Boy game, it was great to see so many of you jump in on this Challenge! @RadioPoultry won the Squad Challenge with a high score of 198,500. @Kid A was right on his tail with an incredible 181,390. @atarilbc brought his A-Game with his Lunchtime Unwinds, posting a high score of 87,510. @ThatBuffGamer posted an impressive 69,340. I showed up with @kamakazi20012, @Atari Creep and @RickR to post our best! Congrats to everyone who played! I'd encourage RadioPoultry to post his new high score on the Scoreboard, and maybe this Challenge can continue on! Our next Squad Challenge will be for the Atari ST. 2019 will be changing it up in High Score Squad with new challenges for Lynx, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Atari ST, Jaguar, 5200, TurboGrafx-16, Intellivision, ColecoVision, Game Boy and much much more, in addition to the usual lineup of video game systems. We may even have an Arcade challenge! Be ready to play all of these game systems, we'll be breaking new ground with more interesting Squad Challenges coming up very soon and throughout the year, and we hope to see you there. Hi Guys - thanks so much for the support and kind words. I finally got around to joining the forums - just wanted to provide you a brief update on this project - I have a few of the Robotron controllers available here: retrogameboyz.com - it's just my eBay listings. I have lots of parts and try to assemble a few each day. https://www.ebay.com/sch/retrogameboyz/m.html Check my feedback and let me know what you think. I offer 30 day free returns if you are unsatisfied for any reason, so you can't lose. Even if you want to try it out and decide that it's not exactly what you wanted etc. I have sold about 700 controllers since March 2018. I constantly improving things and making different configurations. I recently started 3D Printing others some as those I have sold to wanted more customization. I do take requests as well. I am on v3 of the case and v1.2 of the boards - so far the units I have tested seem promising. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again! Here is the Robotron controller Demonstration:

    Ch...ch...ch...changes

I have been MIA lately due to some major life changes. My wife and I are separating after 15 years and I just recently moved on my own. This all came as a shock to me. I also took on a promotion at work in late August. Between everything going on I've taken a break from gaming to reflect and heal. I'm in a studio loft downtown, so I'm a bit space challenged and will probably not have a rig for awhile. The new TV doesn't have inputs for legacy connections so I'll be getting a Retrotink for composite and S Video. Will post my rig when it's setup. The one thing I'm really pumped on is the loft (space aside). I can now walk to work and I have some pretty amazing views. I didn't ask for a midlife crises but I'm trying to make the most of it. Wanted to share this sunrise photo from this morning. Happy holidays to the Atari.io community! I'll see you in 2019!

    Squad Challenge - Tetris (NES)

There's some truth behind the story @Justin mentioned about renting Tengen's Tetris. The area I grew up in had a chain of video rental stores called Vision Video. They had the Tengen version of Tetris. I rented it twice in a row. It was because of this game I discovered Tengen. I rented it twice in a row. I went to rent it a third time and the rental store refused to rent it again. I asked why? They did give me an honest answer, though. If the store wanted to continue to rent out Nintendo games the store had to remove any games that were not licensed by Nintendo. It was Nintendo's "rule". That was the answer they gave me. I asked if it could be purchased to which they answered with a solid no that it had to be sent back to Nintendo to be destroyed. Such a sad fate for a great game. That also went for Super Sprint and other Tengen Games that were actually good games. I'm surprised to learn decades later that some Tengen games survived. It's why I'm hellbent on finding any Tengen games for the NES I can. I would still like to know how after the lawsuits Tengen did manage to get a few of their games as official releases.

💰 Have you ever found a Red Quarter? What did you think it was? Red quarters are known as “shills”, “house coins” or “freebies.” If you’ve ever found an old quarter that was painted red, (usually dated before the ‘90s) those were used in Arcades to count free plays. Whenever the machine ate your quarter without giving you your game, you’d tell the attendant who would give you a free game to make up for it. Sometimes they had the key to open the coin mech and hit the switch, but in many cases Arcade owners didn’t trust their teenaged employees to have coin mech keys where they could reach in there and grab a fist full of quarters. Instead, Arcades would have extra quarters called “shills” or “house coins” used for this purpose. Sometimes these could also be found in laundromats and diners with jukeboxes. House coins were painted red so that at the end of each week, when all the quarters were counted from the coin box, they would subtract the red quarters from their earnings and return them to the attendants to be used again. Over time most of these quarters have made their way back into circulation. The next time you come across a red quarter dated before the early 1990s set it aside! You never know if that quarter worked long hours at an old Tilt or Aladdin’s Castle somewhere.

    Storm's Giveaway - THE PICKS!

Okay, here we go! The draft order is below. Some ground rules: I won't put a time limit on the picks, but try to be as efficient as possible. I realize everyone is located all over the map and keep varied hours, so there's no expectation on my end. Consoles/handhelds/lightswitches count as one pick, TWO (2) games count as a pick, FOUR (4) manuals count as a pick. Trading of picks is allowed. If you want to move up & offer up later picks, by all means, offer away. You may pass on your pick. Post your selections in this thread. Both Skyrim 360 games count as one game. Games that had matching manuals in the loose pile of manuals will now be included with the game.. My only goal is to get rid of everything. 😀 I THINK that covers everything. This is the Comlynx Cable I bought on a trip to Toys R Us with my family late one Friday night after school in the Fall of 1993. It was my first Lynx purchase and one of the first things I ever bought as a retrogamer. I had this tradition: Whenever I was super excited to get a new video game system, I would start my collection with something very small. Maybe an inexpensive game, or an accessory on clearance. That way, at least I’d have a little something to bring home and start my Lynx collection. It was something to pick up and look at a million times while I mowed lawns and saved up all summer to buy an Atari Lynx system and a few good games. I was 11 or 12 years old and it was my way of planting my flag in the ground and declaring “Hey everybody, this is the next frontier of my collection and YES I’m going to do this!” It was no easy task to save up $200-$300 when you’re a kid and this was my way of getting amped up and committing to saving up for a big purchase! I was planting the seeds of my collection. I bought this Comlynx Cable for $9 on that first night. The following Friday I returned to Toys R Us and bought a Lynx Sun Visor ($3) Lynx Pouch ($9) and Lynx Battery Pack ($14). I came home and placed everything on my shelf next to my Atari 2600 and 7800 collection - in a new “Lynx corner”. 26 Years later I still have this little Comlynx Cable, I just posted this on our Atari I/O Instagram account and I’m excited to be able to share this with you. My Comlynx Cable is like the $1 bill they have taped on the wall at every Chinese restaurant, it’s only a dollar but it’s the first dollar they ever made. I was just beginning my journey as a retrogamer, and trips to Toys R Us were the epicenter of my classic gaming passion. It was 1993, the 16-Bit console wars were raging and I was just waking up to the realization of “wait, hold up.. whatever happened to Atari?” Atari used to be everywhere… and somehow now it was gone entirely, with the exception of a few Lynx items in Toys R Us. I started visiting Toys R Us to see what Atari stuff I could find. After all, I hadn’t really looked for Atari stuff in a number of years, maybe I had missed something? By this time, there was nothing to be found of Atari 2600, 5200 or 7800 items. I found out later that whatever was left had all been clearanced out to make room on the shelf for Super Nintendo. The only classic Atari items I could find were off-brand “Gemeni” joysticks and paddle controllers, and an older-style TV switch box. Toys R Us still had Atari Lynx though, and that was enough. At the time, the bright colorful graphics and sound seemed amazing compared to Game Boy. I always found myself drawn to the niche video game stuff in Toys R Us, the Lynx stuff and the TurboGrafx stuff that was sooo good, but unloved and about to go on clearance. The Comlynx Cable was a multiplayer cable that let up to 8 Lynx units chain together for multiplayer games. Comlynx was originally developed to run over infrared links but was changed to a cable-based networking system before the final release. When players walked through the beam, the link would be interrupted. Todd's Adventures in Slime World was the first recordable 8-Player co-op game, and the only 8-Player game for the Atari Lynx.

I reached 89K on my stream the other night so I set my new goal for 100K. I set my new PB a short while ago: 146,770. I reached the 4th Key and stumbled a bit. Nonetheless, I'm thrilled with this run.

    I finally got a TG-16!

Found one at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo Swap Meet today. I also included a pic of the other good junk I bought. It works great. Only one game. Anyone have games for sale?

    Hyperkin "The Trooper" Controller

I picked up a Hyperkin "The Trooper" controller this week for $15. This is the "improved" version of the controller that shipped with the first run of the Retron 77 last summer. Apparently, Hyperkin took the criticism of their initial controller and improved it for subsequent runs of the Retron 77. In addition, they offer it as a stand alone purchase. I'm not really in the market for a 2600 compatible emulation box but I was interested in the controller. Here are the basic details: Ambidextrous two-button layout Faux "woodgrain" styling 10 ft. cable Angled corners for comfort Traditionally styled joystick I put about two hours on the controller playing a variety of games. For purposes of comparison, I also played the games with an Atari CX-40 (XE version) which I purchased NOS from B&C Computervisions. The games that I played included Berzerk, Ms. Pac-Man, Q-bert, Spider Fighter, Missile Command and Demon Attack. I really wanted to try a cross section of games that put the controller through its paces. Here are my thoughts: Build quality: I've had bad luck with modern 2600 compatible controllers. They frequently break within just a few gaming sessions. The Trooper didn't feel rugged but it doesn't come off as cheap either. The button was more responsive than an Atari CX-40; it felt great. The joystick itself isn't as stiff as a real controller but it didn't feel like it would break. My initial impression is that its a sturdy alternative to some of the other replacements that are on the market. Styling/Design: The first thing I noticed about the control was its angled corners. These are a call back to the Retron itself and its an interesting/handsome look overall. Functionally the corners make the controller slightly more comfortable to hold than a CX-40. The 10 ft. cable is a nice touch and I'm glad to put away my Genesis extensions. The ambidextrous two-button layout is a nice feature but I don't really need it. Its a great inclusion for south paws I suppose. One thing that is a bit off-putting is the faux wood grain. Its a little too orange and doesn't really go with my 4-switch Woody. They might have tried matching the original if they were going through the effort. Control: As I said above, the Trooper didn't feel as stiff as the CX-40. Its a softer overall feeling stick that you don't have to press quite as hard. During my gaming session, I found it to handle diagonals much better than the CX-40. Games like Missile Command and Berzerk were a joy to play. It also fared comparatively well in the shooters Spider Fighter and Demon Attack. The CX-40 had an edge on the 4-way games, particularly Ms. Pac-Man. I found myself missing tight direction changes with the Trooper that I can hit with the CX-40. As I stated above, button response was great; much improved from the CX-40. Overall, I like the Trooper. It seems like a sturdy replacement/spare for 2600 compatible consoles. It stood up well against the CX-40 for most games and the 10 ft. cable and angled corners are a plus. For $15 you can't go wrong. Also, I'm hoping the name is a reference to Iron Maiden. \m/ Have you tried the Trooper? What are your thoughts?
