I’d like to share something very special with you guys. This is an Atari Strategy Guide I began writing in 6th Grade. It's all true. Atari I/O started on paper! I was 11 years old when I made this. If you flip through the pages of the Strategy Guide and squint hard enough, you’ll recognize similarities with our Atari I/O Blog posts, particularly the game reviews that I do with BTB. I thought you guys might think this is cool to see. I’ve been talking with @btbfilms76, @Atari Creep and @Gianna about my days collecting Atari games in the early '90s, how some of the most interesting stuff in my collection are documents from Atari, and what it was like trying to do all this before the internet. My conversations with them inspired me to share this as a PDF for all of you to enjoy. It’s more of a sentimental curiosity than anything really useful, but if you read closely you’ll find a helpful tip or two in there. It's also a bit of an artifact from a pre-internet Justin who way back then was just as fascinated and enthralled with the World of Atari as I am today. This little Strategy Guide was absolutely the beginning of what would become my Atari website and would evolve in time to become Atari I/O. It really did start on paper. I scanned the original documents and compiled them in a PDF file as a digital recreation of the real thing. I also added a Table of Contents to help you find your way around, and a Preface which you see above. I didn't get very far with the guide, but the games covered include these 7800 titles: FATAL RUN JINKS ACE OF ACES SCRAPYARD DOG CENTIPEDE The Strategy Guide also contains 2600/7800 cartridge price lists and customer service ordering forms from Atari Corp. from 1993. If you manage to make out my sloppy 6th Grade handwriting, you'll notice that I get some details wrong. I began writing this Strategy Guide before the internet was available to me. Digging up historical info on Atari, we had to get resourceful. Whatever I knew I learned from my own experience of piecing together historical details from Atari catalogs and game boxes, checking out books from the school library, talking with @Video 61 for hours at a time, or calling Atari directly and speaking with Geraldine at the front desk. "Hi is Sam there?" In a way it’s sad that Jack Tramiel’s Atari didn’t give us nice things like expansive Strategy Guides, big beautiful fold-out maps, a magazine as cool as Nintendo Power, or the type of immersive games that would’ve created a huge demand for things like this. Little 6th Grade me took it upon myself to make this, because what else was I supposed to do? I was still excited about Atari, I wanted to share Atari with as many people as I could. I don’t know who I was writing this for at the time, friends I guess, but apparently I was writing it for you guys. It just had to sit in a time capsule first. ⬇️ The PDF is attached below. ⬇️ I hope you guys enjoy this glimpse into the beginning of Atari I/O! Atari 7800 6th Grade Strategy Guide.pdf

Got me a Ms. Pac-Man cab!

So a buddy of mine calls me up and asked me if I wanted his non working Ms Pac-Man cab. The deal was that if I fixed it, he could play it whenever he came down, which I had no problem with. This is what the cab looked like when I got it. The cab was pretty beat up. Just running my hand across the sides made the paint fall off of it. Someone had painted the entire cab black. As you can see the cab was in pretty bad shape. So even before I tried to make the thing actually work, I painted it black. I primered it first before doing so. At this point I actually tried to make it work. I found some wires that looked like they were spliced into. I figured these were the connections for power. There was no power plug when I got it. I got a PC power cable, cut the end off and spliced it into the existing cuts in the wiring. When I plugged it in, it powered on...however with some problems.. The screen was all distorted. I had found 10 different knobs in the back of the arcade. I turned all of them to see if it would fix it. Nothing did. I thought maybe they all have to be dialed in perfect. After 3 days of messing with these knobs, I was getting frustrated. I was staring at the back of the cab when I saw this metal bracket with a hole in it. I shined a flashlight through the hole and I saw a potentiometer with a screwdriver slot on it. I grabbed a screwdriver and turned it clockwise and it made it worse. So I went counterclockwise all the way and it made the screen totally clear! ...with some minor distorted on the right part of the screen . Just had to slightly turn it back clockwise to get rid of the distortion After that I spent a few minutes to dial in the colors properly. At this point, I got a proper power cable for the cab and installed it. The control panel overlay was pretty dirty and torn so that got replaced. Put some new buttons too. When I got done with that, I wanted to go all out. I ended up getting a repro glass bezel and installed it. The repro is very high quality. Very happy with it. My friend had got this thinking if he couldn't fix it, he was going to keep the Marquee and get rid of it. Knowing that I got this machine for free, I got a new Marquee and gave him the original. Got a high score save kit as well. Last thing I got was the panel art and new T molding. When I got the art in, I realized that if I were to install the front part as is, the coin door chop off the forehead of Ms. Pac-Man. So I had to raise the coin door 4.5 inches. I also was able to hide the bolts that hold the coin bucket in place below the surface of the wood so I didn't have to shove them to the front of the artwork. Once that was done I installed the art along with the new t molding. When I installed the cab was finally finished! I wish the color of the panel art was a closer match to the control panel overlay, but in the end, I think it came out pretty awesome. I'm forever grateful that my buddy gave me this arcade. It's definitely in my top 3 favorite arcade games of all time. It was a lot of work putting this thing together Here's a side by side of the before and after!

New Atari 2600 Homebrew - Galaga!

The guys from ChampGames are currently working on an amazing home port of Galaga for the Atari 2600. I know NSG posted about it but this deserves its own thread. Head to the thread in AA to get the demo binary: Champ Games - Galaga 2600

    Do you have any pets?

I thought this would be a nice topic for a conversation starter 😊 I have a long haired dachshund named Sally who is 7. She is very shy yet super protective. She loves going for car rides, boat rides, and getting occasional Puppacinos from Starbucks (whipped cream in a small cup). 🙂 Sally is so sweet and I don't know what I would do without her! If you have pets, share their pics and a little about them below!

    Greetings! Hello! Salutations!

I'm new around here! My name is 'Dan' but I go by the online moniker 'Rocky Raccoon'. I've been collecting since about my teen years. I am currently 34. I like collecting a heck of a whole lot, and have a varied collection of consoles. My favorite era is probably the mid eighties, onwards. The first two machines I ever played on we're an Atari 2600 in my dad's basement on a B&W TV, and my Dad's Commodore 64. My favorite retrogame series is The Fantasy Zone series of games. I was first introduced to collecting through a dear old friend back in MA, USA, and have been in the hobby since. I've been learning to get into the technical side of the hobby-- learning to fix consoles-- diagnose problems and fix them, though I still have a long ways to go-- though I do have a background in electronic schematic reading thanks to CAD courses I took in high school that have generally helped me a bunch there. I learned about this place primarily through the NoSwearGamer on Youtube where this place was mentioned once in a while, and decided to come check it out. I also hang around AtariAge with the same user name.

Hi everyone, Your browser may be giving you a malware "security warning" when you visit Atari I/O. I'm aware of this issue and working to resolve it. The forums have been updated with their latest security update this morning and should currently be a safe place to visit despite the security warning. The malware issue is affecting the "main" side of the website (http://www.atari.io) which runs on Wordpress. The forums side of the website (https://forums.atari.io) has always been hosted on a different server and runs on different software, which is more secure. However, because Google has detected the malware issue in the Wordpress part of our website, they have issued a warning for the entirety of Atari I/O until the issue has been completely resolved. Once I've been able to identify and remove the malicious content from the Wordpress side of the site, I will need to request a security review from Google and provide them with documentation showing the changes made to the site. This may take a little time. If there's "a doctor in the house" and you have experience removing malware from Wordpress sites and would like to volunteer your assistance in helping me resolve this issue please send me a PM. I will be working on this and will keep you updated as I reach important milestones. Best Wishes to All!

Hi Everyone, Update The Malware issue has been identified and will be resolved for Summer, and was limited to the side of the site that’s built on WordPress. The Forums are built on a different, more secure and more expensive platform which has continuously proven to be safe and never infected. Moving forward I would like to make better use of the Forums Platform and move away from WordPress. Here's What To Expect Next The Malware issue will be resolved soon, and we will have a fun summer with events and giveaways. I’m excited for what’s to come and I hope you are too! I don’t expect any downtime for the Forums during the maintenance to resolve the site issue. WordPress has not proven to be a very secure platform. In fact Malware has been a growing issue with WordPress and we don’t want to face a security issue like this ever again. You can expect that I’ll be looking at ways to phase out the WordPress side of the site and rebuilding those pages within the Forums platform. I’m also building some big new areas in the Forums that we’ve wanted to do for quite a long time. I’m always looking at new ways to make Atari I/O a more vibrant community and a useful place to visit and spend your time. New Changes There are some other new changes to the Forums I’d like to announce today! Some of the changes I’m holding back on announcing until they’re ready to roll out. It was a bad idea for Atari to announce amazing new vaporware that never saw the light of day, and likewise its best that I build these things first and then show them to you. Some changes we’ve made in the past week include: Simplified Forums Cleaned up the Forums. Made forum descriptions more clear to make it easier to understand what to post and where. Redundant forums were merged and given new titles and descriptions. Let’s keep the Forums clean and simple. Member Blogs We’re placing added emphasis and increased visibility on the Blogs. Members will have additional abilities for blog creation which will be announced soon. Updated Member Ranking System Updated Pac-Man “Fruit” levels achieved at 2600, 5200, and 7800 posts respectively. Updated Revised Badges for Admin and Moderator Roles We've updated our Role Badges to match the fresh new look of the upgraded Forums. Updated Moderator Roles - Introducing a new member group called “Senior Fellow” Our Legacy Moderators who are not active daily in the Forums will be graduating from their roles as Moderators and moving into new, less active roles as Atari I/O Senior Fellows. This includes The Professor, DeLorean, Zontar and Museum Matt, who will all continue to have a hand in the Forums without creating an expectation that they will be active daily in the Forums. New Atari I/O Moderator Gianna We’re welcoming a new Moderator to the Atari I/O family, @Gianna who will be joining us in the Forums to help me out. She will be active in High Score Squad and will be joining us for Wednesday Night Atari Chat occasionally, and you can expect to see her posting throughout the Forums on a consistent basis. She’s a very nice person and I’m sure everybody will like her. BTB and MaximumRD Are Helping Out Too @btbfilms76 and @MaximumRD will also be more active throughout the summer in helping with the site. MaximumRD has created a new Member Blog, which you can see here, and BTB will be more active in the Forums with posting, helping out, and of course creating new episodes of Jag Bar, Lynx Lounge and 7800 Avenue. Atari I/O Moderator Team 2020-2021 Your Atari I/O Moderator team for the 2020-2021 season will be @Justin @btbfilms76 @Gianna and @MaximumRD The most important thing that could help me though is YOU. All of you, being here, making friends, having fun, posting and playing games. You guys are what make this adventure worth it! Best Wishes and stay safe everyone,

True Story, back in the day I rented from a store that had an amazing selection of games, I rented Tengen Tetris one day, loved it, a week later I returned to rent it again, I could not find it, I asked the clerk, he said pointed to the Nintendo Tetris, I was thrown off at first and said "Er, no, I don't think that is the one, the one I rented was not made by Nintendo". Long story short, he denied they had, OR EVER HAD any other version, even me clearly stating you DID because I rented it, he was trying (for some reason) to cover so hard "Are you sure it was HERE you rented it?", he absolutely would not budge on it, insisted they never had any other version so I just dropped it. Only years later, when I would come to read articles and info in magazines etc, would I learn the story of TENGEN TETRIS and TENGEN themselves, now I still do not know WHY exactly this occurred, maybe the clerk bought (or stole?) the TENGEN version because he had learned that TENGEN would have to pull sales? Maybe the store was ordered to PULL the game off their shelf? But in either of those cases WHY claim they NEVER had it in the first place? So whatever the reason I can only suspect wrong doing on the clerk or store managers part because of their behavior acting like they were never in possession of the game, like it was some highly illegal item like plutonium or something 😜. Anyways, carry on, was not my intention to disrupt this thread but all this talk about TETRIS, OFFICIAL, TENGEN etc, just brought back that silly memory that comes back whenever I hear the TENGEN name lol. FEEL FREE TO MOVE THIS to OFF TOPIC or perhaps WEIRD STORIES under CLASSIC GAMING or something.......CARRY ON GUYS. 😆😎🍻

    The 2019 Retro Swap Box

Here is what I took. First of all, I feel that this Elmo's 123's was put in there specifically for me by NSG. If so, THANK YOU. It looks good next to my Elmos' ABC's. And it reminds me of my oldest child when he was a toddler. Priceless. And here's the bulk of what I took. I feel like the PSP games were in there for me, and I thank you, mystery giver, for them! Does anyone else collect for PSP? I really agonized over the Wico 5200 stick. It's so cool, but I feel selfish for taking it. At the same time, it took up a lot of real estate in the box! NSG or Willie, if one of you would like it, I'm happy to ship it to you separately. The football homebrew is so cool! It's a 2600 version of the Mattel handheld football. In case you don't know, I'm the weird gamer that really loves sports games. So that game and the SNES baseball will be played a lot. I also hogged the 2600 games, figuring Willie and NSG probably already had them. The boxes are a little rough, but I really dig the price tags. Activision Skiing is a game in which I earned the patch, so having a boxed copy is really nice. Oooh, and an NSG card pack. I'm hoping for a few Oregon Duck players in there! Below is some stuff I took mostly to get the space for more games in the box. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, if anyone wants any of this, I'm happy to ship it separately. Given that, the Star Trek book will be read and enjoyed, I promise. And I really like the ESPN movies. And the multi-system cable is handy. Lastly, I want to say THANK YOU to all of you. Especially NSG for hosting the box. It really is a lot of fun. The box is stuffed full again, and I'll get it out to Willie as soon as I can.

Hi Guys - thanks so much for the support and kind words. I finally got around to joining the forums - just wanted to provide you a brief update on this project - I have a few of the Robotron controllers available here: retrogameboyz.com - it's just my eBay listings. I have lots of parts and try to assemble a few each day. https://www.ebay.com/sch/retrogameboyz/m.html Check my feedback and let me know what you think. I offer 30 day free returns if you are unsatisfied for any reason, so you can't lose. Even if you want to try it out and decide that it's not exactly what you wanted etc. I have sold about 700 controllers since March 2018. I constantly improving things and making different configurations. I recently started 3D Printing others some as those I have sold to wanted more customization. I do take requests as well. I am on v3 of the case and v1.2 of the boards - so far the units I have tested seem promising. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again! Here is the Robotron controller Demonstration:

    Ch...ch...ch...changes

So the divorce was finalized last month. The last few weeks I've been spending my off hours getting ready to list our house. I haven't lived there for six months and there are some things that need to be addressed before the listing. I'm hoping for a quick sale so that I can close the book on this chapter. Onward and upward!

Here's pics of my Intellivision stuff... Got all of this from a coworker. It was literally one of those, "Look what I found in my mom's attic" kind of deals. He tried selling it all to a local game store, but didn't like their offer then he came to me. I told him he should have come to me first. lol I offered him $50 and he accepted. Then I found out that I could only get $40 out as cash at the register, so I told him I'd owe him the other 10 and he said not to worry about it. The $40 was already over twice what the game store offered him. 😃 (Sorry the pics aren't that great... need to take updated ones. These are on my old apartment's kitchen floor and the dark color tile wasn't a good choice for a background.)
