The first round of shipments should be on the ferry this afternoon. Apologies in advance for any dog fur on or in the boxes. I will work on getting the rest sent out tomorrow. I still need an address from @Mr Toon & @Willie! I'll send a PM with the tracking #. If you didn't get one today, you should get it tomorrow.

Yep. Just got an email from them stating they are showcasing the new console at this year's E3 in closed quarters. They are also going to show five colors the console will come in. I'm very excited about this unit. I can't wait to see it in person when it's released. Any one going to try to get one of these?

This is too cool. Working consoles with 22 playable games at E3!!!

Sounds like our little dog is going to enjoy the new smells on that box. Gives her something to do.

No worries about fur in the box. I know the pup can't help it. Probably shedding his or her winter coat. Thanks for everything, SS. Appreciated, as always.

I stopped at a garage sale today after work, which is something I rarely do. I'm glad I did, because I found a pretty nice PS2 setup. I'm most excited about the Logitech steering wheel. Everything needs cleaning. No idea if it works. Any guesses as to whether it will work or not?

Now that I've got a PS2 steering wheel, I've decided to gather all the driving games I have together. Time to get busy driving.

Yep, never played it myself. But recently got a rom pack and it seems to be working on my emulator. Will have to hook up a controller and check it out.

    Monochrome Atari 7800 Cartridge Labels

The SMS box art is probably the worst of all time.
  19. 1 point
At least those had some color. The 7800 carts just felt like they came from the b/w days of television. Box art was awesome! Then you pulled out the cart to see that b/w artwork? Blasphemy! I can understand SEGA's thinking on the SMS cart labels. They matched the color of the console and were never meant to be kept out of their case. It was SEGA's first Western console that they really didn't market alone...they had help from TONKA which most likely had hands on final designs. Atari making those black and white labels made it hard to enjoy the artwork on those carts. I do remember the copy of Ms. Pac-Man I had in the 1990's had a color label on it. The one I have now is b/w on gray. Also, the Robotron in my collection has a gray top label and silver end label. I guess it's mix and match.

My Basic Programming for 2600 is in a gray box as well.

If you look at my first picture at the top of the page you'll see at least two variations. Centipede and Joust are black ink (1 color) printed on a metallic-looking label. These have a 1987 copyright. In my experience these have been the most common of the 7800 monochrome labels. Look at the Xevious label though. Xevious is black ink with silver ink used for the border (2 colors) printed on a white label. You can see in the artwork for Xevious that underneath it all is white. This has a 1986 copyright. Somehow they looked at that label and thought "You know what, we can eliminate one more color if we start with a metallic-looking label instead of a white label."

I have seen those! It doesn't get more generic than that. They look like the little white boxes that the CX40 Joysticks came packaged in with the 2600. Let's also not forget the Jack Tramiel era monochrome 2600 boxes. I bought this at Kay-Bee in 1994. Imagine the impression this made on people looking at video games at the time:

    Garage Sale Finds

Yep. I have one that I found in a garage sale a few years ago. It was a wholesale type buy. I bought a small box with a bunch of old PC hard drives. A PS2 hard drive was in the mix. But I have a slim model so I couldn't tell you what was on it or anything. I think only a few games made use of it. The only one I know of for sure was a Final Fantasy game which should have come with the hard drive. Nice find RickR! That is a nice setup. ATV OffRoad is a blast to play. Did the steering wheel come with pedals or does it need those? Some do is why I ask. And you got a memory card, too! It should at least power on if nothing else. If you can't get it to read disks you may have to take it apart and clean the disc drive and its laser lens. Some "fatty" PS2 models have a small white gear inside the disc drive that adjusts the distance between the disc and laser. You may have to adjust that as well.

I think Sony DID release a hard drive for the PS2. You need the original "fat" model and a network adapter. And I think it's hackable. I tested this PS2 and it works just fine. Both controllers too. Then I cleaned it up really nicely. Good as new. I have not yet tried the steering wheel, though.

Cool find. I used to have an original design PS2, but someone stole it. That is one reason why I stayed Atari in my collection. But, I had been collecting over 300 Atari games across all Atari platforms and computers since 1982 anyway. Say, did Sony ever market hard drives for the PS2? i had heard that they were thinking about it. It certainly could make games load faster. Would you not think? My brother has a PS2 Silm Black somewhere in his house. I liked it. Thanks for letting me share.

LOL I suppose they could have indeed being worse! I do remember being disappointed with the grayscale labels when I first saw them. I was quite surprised when games started to come with colored labels!
  27. 1 point
Well, it could've been worse...😂 But in all seriousness, at least they picked it up and added color after the first set of games. Personally, I just wish they invested more in the actual development of the games, rather than farming them out to cheap, one man teams. The final releases were really good and games like that could've helped out a lot if they came out sooner.

    Monochrome Atari 7800 Cartridge Labels

Have you ever seen those 2600 boxes that came in black & white? I think they came in 3 packs of games. Kind of crazy to see those. When I first got my VCS, the games came with text labels only, and even they were in color. When they switched to picture labels (probably 1981 or so?), it was mind blowing. I especially liked the colorful end labels on those. You are so right about these 7800 labels....cheap, cheap, cheap. Cutting corners until you're selling an tetrahedron instead of a square.
  29. 1 point
Interestingly, even the 7800 monochrome labels come in variations. Some will be the silver labels, others will be the dull gray. I think I have one that might be a full-color label.

A view of the RickR sanctum

A day in the life of RickR: I spent some time today during the Super Bowl on a little project in my garage. I decided to mount my garage TV on a wall mount so I could reclaim the workbench space. Indeed, it seems to have returned 20% of the bench top. I think it turned out really nice. The mount came from Harbor Freight, and was only $10! I had to rearrange the stuff on the wall a bit, but that's just part of the fun. I use this TV to watch over-the-air channels while exercising, football on weekends, and a lot of times for gaming (either repairing or testing consoles, or playing systems I've pulled out of the attic).
