Today I was reacquainted with the Atari 2600 version of Crystal Castles using an online emulator. I fist played the arcade version of Crystal Castles around 2013 on the XBOX collection Atari Anthology. I thought it was a bit odd. Here was a game I had never heard of surrounded by true classics: Centipede, Asteroids, Pong, Super Breakout, Tempest, and more. I played this "weird 3D Pac-Man clone" with a D-Pad at the time, and I'm not sure if I knew I could jump until later! I thought it was just okay. Little did I know that the reason I didn't like it was because of the D-Pad! I'm not a fan of analog sticks with old games, so I almost never use them. Not that the analog stick is any better for Crystal Castles. Until I found the cabinet in person, I didn't even know it was a trak ball game. After playing the cab, I grew to love the game. A ton. If I could get any arcade cabinet, Crystal Castles would be it. I played it on an Arcade 1up machine in a game store in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I don't know if the machine was broken, but the minuscule trak ball was puny, imprecise, and honestly horrible. I want to say it was the Asteroids cab. Nevertheless, if it was cheaper I would totally pick it up. I think @MaliciousCarp might have one, but maybe I'm thinking of someone else. I love the arcade game so much, I went and got the high score. This was on the cab I found while staying at a hotel. We went back, and YEAH! High score still standing! Sadly I didn't snap a pic of the score itself, but I did take a picture of my initials on the first level. Anyone else know the warp in level one that nets you 140,000 points? The 2600 port I played shortly after I first played the arcade game, also on Atari Anthology. For me, it has always been a "you get an A for effort" kind of game. It's very impressive for the system, yes, but I never liked the controls or hit detection on the video waf-- I mean, gems. This morning, however, I was reading through my first ever topic on this site asking your top ten 2600 titles. I saw that some people really liked this port. I thought I'd give it a second chance like I did with ET and Dragster. I don't have the physical cartridge for it (shocker), but I did have my old Windows Vista machine out, so I looked up an online JavaScript emulator and started playing with the keyboard. I don't normally like using the keyboard for games, but it really does work well for this title. I didn't like the D-pad controls, but I imagine it would work well with the 2600 joystick, which is what I normally use. I got a pretty decent score I feel. The level design is much, much simpler here, but it doesn't hurt the game at all. There are loads of 3D levels crammed into the cart, and that's very impressive. They're all symmetrical, too, but that is very typical of the 2600's backgrounds, as seen in Adventure, Combat, Pac-Man, and many others. Like ET and Dragster, I had a blast playing 2600 Crystal Castles again. It's on my new wish list. Sadly my local game store is selling for $10, nearly twice the amount on price charting.com without shipping. Would I get my money's worth? Yes, but that's still a bit much in my opinion. Overall, I would say it's an A-tier Atari 2600 title when played with the right controller. I would definitely buy it if it were just a little cheaper. I think $5 would be a good price. To me, not many 2600 games are worth over that. Tunnel Runner, Pitfall II, Montezuma's Revenge, maybe Mountain King. Price charting.com puts Crystal Castles at about $5 at the time of writing this. Special thanks to @1Littlebeast for getting me thinking about Crystal Castles, and for recommending the 2600 version I thank @TrekMD and@Atari 5200 Guy

http://www.digitpress.com/library/manuals/atari2600/tunnel_runner.pdf Yeah, this is a hidden gem of sorts on the system, yet it seems to have a following too. My gameplay video of it is my third most popular gameplay video, only trailing Pitfall and Adventure, and my review is also one of my more popular 2600 reviews, almost pulling E.T. numbers. I have no idea why out of the 100s of 2600 games I covered, it's one of the more popular ones. I never heard of it before I started doing my show. Maybe it has something to do with the remake someone did. It has over 600k views!

Good idea to watch the nosweargamer review. I'll do that. No, I didn't realize there was a compass. I shall try again with that in mind. I also didn't realize there was a timer! Whoops. Thanks!

I finally got time! First thing is a favor to ask: I could not find a PDF version of the manual to download. If anyone knows of a link, please let me know! I ended up perusing an on-line version of the manual, so I'm not sure I fully got the gist of the game. So please correct me on anything wrong in my synopsis below. First impression: This game is awesome! It doesn't look like a VCS game at all. No flicker. A convincing first-person view. Very impressive. Things I liked: They kept it simple. Find the key, avoid the face-balls, find the exit. Those face-ball guys are cool! The menacing sound that gets louder as they get closer reminds me of original Doom. Very very well done. Nice ramp up of difficulty. It starts out easy (which makes it easier to learn). But it ramps up nicely. The map is easy to use and very helpful. Things I didn't like Sometimes, it's hard to stop moving. It can be disorienting. Sometimes you intend to turn 90 degrees but the controls are so twitchy, you can do a 180 without realizing it. Overall: I loved it! This is a game that deserves more recognition. Back in the day, I didn't even know it existed. I wish I did...young me would have spent hours on this fun game. Thank you @HDN for insisting I give it a try. I want to spend more time with this one. I had to emulate due to my game room being occupied by a guest, but I want to play on real hardware for sure.

STRIPE! I was solving the puzzle in my head and it took me a while and a bit of frustration. I originally had one of the letters as an H instead of R. Back to NSG's question -- no, I stuck with the original. I do recall eating striped cookies made by the Keebler Elves though.

The conclusion to the trilogy five years in the making! I expect an epic review @RickR 🤣 Seriously, great topic! People often say why bother getting a 5200 when you have the Atari 8-bit. Looks like there are at least three great reasons why. I see a five year old comment about the 5200 controllers. I hope this is a thing of the past. If you're a 5200 fan suffering from controller issues today, a cheap and easy solution is to get the ikonsgr adapter that I mentioned in a different post. People shouldn't be harping on this awesome console about controllers anymore.

hobby noun , plural hobbies : a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation Yup, I think gaming fits the definition for the most part. Of course, it shouldn't get in the way of other life priorities, such as family, school & work. Also there are both positives and negatives. On the plus side, it can help keep the mind active, engage in new learning, promote problem solving, and in some cases, promote social interaction (just look at the forums). On the negative side, it can be addictive, certain games may encourage poor behavior for those prone to it, and it's possible the light emitted by screens can inhibit sleep if played late at night. As with just about all hobbies, there are pros and cons, and it's up to parents to do what they think is best for their kids. For instance, we never allowed any screen time for our kids until they were two, and then at that point, it was limited to under an hour a day, and the programming had to be slow paced for younger children. Now our kids are full of imagination and rarely beg for certain toys, because they almost never saw commercials, lol. I hope all goes well with your mom. I encourage you to do your best to show respect when discussing your point of view, as well as for whatever decision she makes. My guess is she's doing what she believes is best for you in the long run. No parent is perfect, but most of us try to do what's best for our kids!

    Favorite Zelda game?

Totally agree. Was excited when Link Between Worlds came out. The 3D Link games are good, but could be part of a separate game series and you would never know the difference. Was hoping the remake of Link's Awakening would be better, but Nintendo botched that. Ridiculous slowdown of a GB game remake in 2020 blew my mind, and I was not super thrilled with the art style, I was hoping for more of a Link Between World look.

I was expecting 'socrates' to come storming back at the end. I posted in the scoreboard thread. Let's see who can break 100k first! This is actually a pretty good port of the arcade game, aside from the strange border around the screen. Current WR champ George Riley has some videos of his Galaxian gameplay that are worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/user/Disjaukifa63

Wow @HDN it's pretty rare for me to run in 7800 games in the couple of stores that I go to. There are a few more stores but I stick to two, and I go to two more a couple of times a year. I picked up a local copy of Commando for the 7800 only because I posted in a Seattle retro gamer Facebook group. I say "local" but it's 1 1/2 to 2 hours away including a short ferry ride. I've caught your bug and have been playing some 7800 lately.

I gave it one final run after seeing your score 🤠 but didn't have it in me. But as you said, there's still the high scoreboard waiting for the 100k score 😉

I was watching a video of the XE version today while in posting jail. The controls look painful. I see how it's a good port of the arcade game with accurate levels and all, but I feel the simpler levels of the VCS edition better suit the joystick controls. Unless the XE version has true trak ball support that I don't know about. Impressive port nevertheless.

I'll cheat and say this: I got it FREE(!) with a subscription to Nintendo Power. It contained Zelda 1 & 2, Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask!!!

Nintendo had a good port of Marble Madness as well, before the Genesis. In my opinion it was good. It was spot-on with the layout. The arcade was harder, though. Of course.

Seriously, though, the arcade version is the best. Hands down!

I have CC for the A2600, XE and ST. I love the A2600 version, but I think that the closer to the arcade it gets in the later versions, the better. It truly is a "gem." Pun intended! :O)

My first Atari memories date back only a short time... for all of you! I first remember being exposed to Atari 2600 games via emulation on my Nintendo Wii circa 2011. I had seen Space Invaders somewhere and was DYING to play it. After my Wii was hacked, my dad loaded up Spacinvad.bin for me. I instantly fell in love with the Atari 2600 and played great games like Combat, Berzerk, and Pac-Man with my dad for days, and by myself for nearly a decade! I am very grateful to have played those games on my Wii, and I'm happy to have all those emulators on it! But still, nothing beats the real thing. I knew about my dad's cousins 2600 for almost as long if not a little bit longer. I so desperately wanted this thing, and I knew it was broken as well. I "subtly" (a second grader's definition of subtly) hinted at wanting the system. I feel a little embarrassed for being so pesky! At about February of this year (BEFORE all the bad stuff happened), I was in my local game store when I spotted a Sears Video Arcade System II or whatever they're called. It was $60 and came with somewhere around ten games and all of the cords and whatnot. I didn't buy it. Shortly afterwards, I heard that my dad's cousin was moving out and downsizing! He was thinking of selling his 2600 and games to a game store, but was hesitant as he wasn't quite ready to part with it. He wanted it to stay in the family, and so now it's here with me! I'm very grateful to have this wonderful system! 2020 has been a real rough year, but there are always good things. I've said this before, but he actually had two systems. Both needed RF adapters and minor repairs. I plan on giving one of the systems (woody) back to him if he wants it, but that has been delayed due to coronavirus. I have had a blast FINALLY being able to collect for Atari systems over the past few months. I bet my story is wildly different than most of yours. I have always loved Atari, and now I can say that I actually have one! Or three, counting the 7800! Now, I just need an Odyssey 2...

I will make that video tonight or tomorrow folks but here is the simple of it. Your score appears at the start of the next level and there is no true kill screen. HOWEVER, if you fail at a level too many times you will be given the options to skip that level and move on to the next puzzle. That is where you should take your final score from, when it displays on the next level. Honor system: please do not continue and add to your high score from that point. Hope this helps and again, I will show what I mean in a video here tonight or tomorrow! GOOD LUCK

I have always described my interesting classic gaming as a hobby, ever since I was very young. I find myself saying that more and more today, as I have to set priorities, I always treat the forums with love but it holds a position in my life as a hobby, i.e. something I am passionate about and have true love for but is expensive, time consuming and doesn't generate income. However it does generate a sense of personal fulfillment and a sense of community, so it holds a special place in my heart as a very special and fun hobby, but it has to have the priority of a hobby in my life. I think games are a good hobby., and everything kept in balance and moderation.

I totally forgot about Mall 205 KayBee! I think the draw for The LLoyd Center was that it was an open air mall that you could walk your bike through. It would snow and rain in the center of the mall. Also you could catch a glimpse of Tonya Harding ice skating once in a while, but that was a little later.. More later in life, I spent my days off at Electronics Boutique, always searching for the greatest Sega CD game ever. Then the Jaguar hit shelves. I DID see a official Aircars being sold there. It was just the cart and manual, no box. THAT was telling. 🙂
