WEEKLY SHOWCASE - Homebrews & Ports

Over the past few years there have been some really amazing new 'homebrew' games and some impressive ports. The question arises, where does one start when showcasing so many cool games? Well, I couldn't answer that question, so I closed my eyes and picked one. So, here we go... PENGO - Yes, Pengo, not a cheap copy or imitation, but a pretty accurate port of the Sega blockbuster. Give it a shot, and tell us what you think! In the future all of the "goodies" appearing in this thread will be indexed for easy perusal and downloading, but in many cases the physical file will be in this thread. EDIT - Please note, you'll have to be signed in for the download to be available. PENGO.bin

Thanks, I've spent a few years on it. Thanks. Yes, it's all internal inside the console... and I can still use the TI keyboard as well.

    eBay's new seller requirements

Update: The funds from my sale finally showed up in my bank account this morning. 5 days after being paid. On the bright side, they already took all fees. There should no longer be a monthly fee invoice. I guess the other really nice thing is that they don't charge you fees at all until you get paid. Remember with the old system, you'd be charged fees and if the buyer never paid, you'd have to wait quite a while to get them refunded. For those that are on the fence, the system does seem to work. I don't necessarily like it. It may take time to get used to.

I noticed the video in message #1 was 6 years old and no longer available (deleted), so I decided to update with the latest photo of my system.

I decided to bring a game that The Retro League Podcast community used to play many years ago. Here's how you play: Someone gives a platform and a 5-7-5 haiku describing a game. The first person to guess right gets the next turn. I'll start in the next post, and try to edit this post to keep score. WEEKLY SHOWCASE - Homebrews & Ports

Keep them coming, please. I must have missed this post originally, but I see it now. I don't have any TI homebrews, and I will give these a try. I do have the SD card cartridge for TI, so these are most appreciated. Thanks! I've mentioned in other posts, but I'm super pressed for space at the moment with the whole family back home during the pandemic. One "special" system out at a time. Right now, it's the Odyssey 2 (and I put away the Commodore 64 to make room) for the "Attack of the Timelord" high score challenge. I was going to do the Atari 5200 next, but it's so dang big. Maybe I'll get the TI out next instead.

4 days zero downloads. I dunno if no one likes the game, or if you all already have it. I guess I'll have to pick out another one...

One of my children just informed me that Joe Decuir will be giving a lecture at his university. I pointed at my wall where we have a signed Combat cart. He's a fount of knowledge and such a nice man. I may try to sit in on that one.

Hobby programmers and their after market creations have vastly improved the Platform scene in the Atari 7800 universe in recent years. Now that there's a good sample size, you may ask, what are the top 10 levels of the 7800's platform games? Even if you didn't ask... I'll offer my opinion here: http://www.atari7800forever.com/toptenplatformlevels.html

    Mega Cartridge?

Well, Defender, Q*Bert, Popeye and River Raid needed a little help. When I got them their labels were totatal trash, so I had to remake the labels. Defender was a little more difficult as I needed to buy special silver cardstock to print the image on.

No kidding! There can be a lot of "issues" for a Newbie when it comes to getting a beige unit. The worst problem is the keyboard itself, most of those units have a Mitsumi (membrane) keyboard that self-destructs over time. Not being able to run third-part cartridges can be another issue with a good portion of them, so I steer all newbies to the black and silver version that says 1981 on the screen. It took me eight freaking years to FINALLY locate a non-Mitsumi in good condition that would also work with non-GROM cartridges. I'm now using it as my "portable system". Yes, portable, I've been known to take my TI with me when I go places. 😄

You've got some really good ideas there @RickR! All five of those bullet points get a 👍! If you could take on a couple of those, it would be awesome. I also like @Marco1019's idea of emulation under the Mac platform, unfortunately I have no Apple products and will not be of any help there. I've heard of something called Wine, that may be of use integrating some Windows only items, but don't know. @Justin is right on the mark when it comes to this being a friendly place, in fact it's the major reason I'm here. 🙂 If we all chip in and spread the word, I think it'll build things up quicker. No one person can do it all, and some may not like hanging out at a place where one person dominates everything. The more the merrier is one of the major goals right? Yes, again I think @RickR has a valid point, especially as we are starting out, keeping it simple and fun. Later as more come on board if they want, more in-depth topics will probably just come about. Rick, would you be willing to start a thread something like, "A Beginners Guide to Getting into the TI?" You've shown you have a firm grasp on the entry level aspects. If you want, I'd be willing to make some support videos for your posts. A month on each game sounds good, maybe even a poll letting users pick between some choices for the person who decides to take on that role? Letting users volunteer for month might also be an option that will let others feel more involved.
