😎 Dwayne Wayne was an underrated nerd:

Yes Murray of course! Riptide was cool and I wish it had run longer. I don't want to tell you how old I was when Dwayne Wayne came on the scene, but school was on my mind and to me Dwayne Wayne was "a cool nerd" who embraced his nerdom, felt okay being smart, but at the same time wasn't depicted as a loner - he had friends, was fun to be around and also ended up with Whitley.
Maybe we should do a Riptide rewatch in the forums if it's available for streaming or on YouTube.

The professor from GI is definitely a nerd. But he's an ADULT nerd.

🕯 There’s nothing nicer than working on the backend of Atari I/O by candlelight on a cold winter’s night.

💥 PRO-TIP - Here’s a good rule of thumb for posting in the YouTube Community forum: Context is key! If the main point of the topic is about sharing a classic gaming YouTube Channel, creator, or series, w/ the intent of sparking up a long term discussion about that channel - the topic belongs in the YouTube Community forum.
Conversely, if the main point of a new topic is about something else, like - "There's a new game out for ColecoVision" - and that post just so happens to contain a YouTube video of the gameplay etc. - that topic belongs in the ColecoVision forum. It’s more about “Coleco” than about “YouTube” and we’d put it in the Coleco forum where we would want it be seen by people interested in ColecoVision.

Fun SEGA trivia: According to Yu Suzuki, if Sega president Hayao Nakayama saw that a game's graphics were completed, he would consider the game finished and try to release it. To get around this -- since it was impossible to just show nothing when Nakayama came by -- Yu rigged a switch under his desk to wipe Space Harrier's color RAM, using it for on-demand graphical sabotage. During one of the times he did this, the effect looked so impressive, Yu extracted the data and kept it in as the game's actual colors.

@RobertLM78 Enjoy! If you like Cannon, you may want to check out Barnaby Jones. The two shows exist in the same "universe". The first episode of Barnaby Jones, "Requiem for a Son", featured a crossover with Cannon, with William Conrad guest-starring as detective Frank Cannon. There was another crossover between the two programs in the 1975 two-part episode "The Deadly Conspiracy". Worth checking out for a Cannon fan!

I had a hunch that one would be good - I'm gonna check it out. Thanks!

🖖 In my head canon Tom Paris and Nicholas Locarno are one and the same.
-
Well, they were played by the same person. Maybe, there is a connection.
-
@DegasElite It was initially supposed to be the same character, similar to how Major Kira was originally conceived as Ensign Ro Laren. In "The First Duty" Locarno was of course expelled from Starfleet Academy for the incident with Red Squadron, and similarly Tom Paris was serving time in the Federation Penal Settlement in New Zealand at the beginning of Voyager. You can find reasons for this given over the years, but it's pretty clear that they wanted to avoid having to credit and pay writers Ronald D. Moore and Naren Shankar - who had written "The First Duty" and created Tom Paris - for every episode of Voyager that Locarno/Paris appeared in. Jeri Taylor will say that Locarno was "irredeemable", yet another Red Squadron character Sito Jaxa was redeemable in the TNG episode "Lower Decks". In my view this has more to do with Hollywood baloney than with anything to do with canonical Star Trek 🖖

😎 What's great about the geek spirit is that life never seems to stop us, and they never seem to kill our enthusiasm, our optimism and our hunger to experience the world. We keep our sense of humor, we protect our dignity, we talk to our friends about the experience and then we start again fresh the very next day. - Paul Feig

🕹️ 30 Years ago today I knowingly, wantonly, became a classic gamer:

@Neon Wraith Atari Lynx is hands down one of my favorite systems of all time, and an excellent starting point. The graphics are still good, it has a small but fantastic library of games, and it's provided me with 3 decades of enjoyment.

😵 Congratulations to @RickR on making his 10,000th Post!

🖖 V’ger created the Borg. Inadvertently to fulfill its quest for its creator, who knows. That’s my personal canon.

Maybe V'Ger created Nomad too.

Ilia was assimilated in a sense, although she no longer "continued to function as a carbon unit" and was replaced entirely by a mechanical being. You can see the root of the idea. V'ger assimilated everything in its path.

🤔 What other custom emojis should I create for Atari I/O?

👼🕹️ Has anybody here ever introduced a modern toddler to Atari 2600?
-
I'm thinking about the Sesame Street Kids Controller games for a 2 year old, but even Ms. Pac-Man or Asteroids could be fun. I'd like to hear a success story!
-
Well, my kids were, but I don't think this counts as they are adults now. 90's kids.
They liked playing Atari with Dad. And they had fun. But to be completely honest, they got a lot more mileage out of the educational computer games of the time and then kids games on Gameboy. More polish and better graphics made them a lot more interested. I had a Dreamcast at the time, but they only liked the racing games (like Hydro Thunder). Gamecube for them was their golden console. Everything took off from there.
-
I wasn't playing 2600 games when my kids were little. They actually grew up watching me play Halo on the PC. I got both my sons Nintendo DS as their first console when all their friends had one.
By the time I got back into Atari games, my kids were teens and very turned off by the blocky graphics and limited sound. Anything they deemed old was not cool in their eyes. They even asked me why I watch old movies when they saw me watching Indiana Jones or Star Wars.

🤔 What was the first video game you fell in love with as a child?
- Show previous comments 4 more
-
Great question… it’s difficult to answer but my first video game loves are all coin-ops: Star Castle, Defender, Robotron. TBH, the 2600 games I played as a kid didn’t grab me as much as the coin-op games.

🤔 Has anyone ever gotten around to 3-D Printing an Atari Panther shell?

3D renderings of the proposed design for the Atari Panther shell have been pretty popular over the past few years, I would be surprised if somebody hasn't "made a Panther" yet.
