To quote my favorite teacher, "Jaguar! Jaguar! Jaguar!"

Tempest 2000 would be an obvious choice. Other good options for an HSC would be Zero 5, Missile Command 3D, Defender 2000 and Raiden.

I'd also love to see a Saturn challenge.

@atarilbc I had a Jaguar Squad Challenge scheduled for December! Unfortunately I had to put everything on hold. Knowing you're on board for a Jaguar challenge, I'll be sure to reach out to you in advance along with a few other Jag owners in here to make sure we have people to participate and make it fun!

@RickR Okay, we started with 2600! Enjoy ☺️

  2. 🤔 Have you found all the new Badges? More are on the way!!

      Justin

Hi @- Ω -, We have anniversary Badges but I disabled them - There are numerous accounts of people who took 2 mins to sign up and never did anything with them. No posts, no engagement, zero participation. Those inactive accounts shouldn’t be rewarded with Badges every year for merely existing. I want our Badges to reward activity and achievement. We replaced the “Anniversary” Badges with Streaks Badges that reward daily participation, with rewards for 7 Day, 30 Day, 100 Day, and 365 Day login streaks! Can you unlock them all? 😄

    3. - Ω -

      - Ω -

It'll be impossible for me to do 365 days.  Life gets in the way.

    4. Justin

      Justin

@- Ω - That’s what makes it an achievement. If you didn’t have to strive to earn a badge - it would be without meaning. It wouldn’t have value. If it was easy for everybody to have a 365 day badge it would lose its specialness. Only the purest of hearts will achieve the rarest of badges.

It’s not about quantity it’s about rarity. The badges aren’t about “how many you have“ it’s about “what have you done, where have you been?” Badges act as mile markers along our path. They are to chronicle and remind us of the things we’ve done in the site, the events we’ve taken part in, the little “rocks and stones” we’ve turned over along the way. Like writing “Omega was here” on the wall and leaving it behind.

Every time you partake in an event, join in a Squad Challenge, create a new club or blog - it’s another chance to unlock something new. There are even hidden Badges for secret achievements that we haven’t announced! Almost like a scavenger hunt! You never know when the next thing you do will unlock a Badge, or when you'll be recognized for a "good deed". It’s not supposed to be easy or anything short of “nearly impossible”

@RobertLM78 Enjoy! If you like Cannon, you may want to check out Barnaby Jones. The two shows exist in the same "universe". The first episode of Barnaby Jones, "Requiem for a Son", featured a crossover with Cannon, with William Conrad guest-starring as detective Frank Cannon. There was another crossover between the two programs in the 1975 two-part episode "The Deadly Conspiracy". Worth checking out for a Cannon fan!

This is good to hear @Sabertooth. Feel free to pin this as a topic in Club VCS if you'd like. This land of hyped false narratives is exactly why I don't dive too deeply into this stuff outside of trusted sources who we know through Atari I/O or similar.

    3. RickR

      RickR

I guess one good thing that came from the erroneous/incomplete news is that a lot of people bought a VCS during the holidays, thinking either it would be their last chance or would be a collector item.  Couple that with the awesome holiday sale on software, and I sure hope Atari got some great financial results during December.

    4. Justin

      Justin

@RickR Yes, let's hope! Atari has been doing a good job of listening to and respecting the hopes and dreams of their fans, and in my view when they make a sincere, authentic effort to do that they've earned our dollars. I hope they continue to do well!

He's still my buddy and we still have an occasional trade.  He's a good guy and I'm glad to have met him here, as well as many other fine people.  Thank you for hosting such a friendly and fun site.

Wed night chat would be fun.  We might also consider an Atari.io Discord, which seems to serve a similar purpose as the chat module.  With links to the high score contests, and other hot topics.

    3. Justin

      Justin

@RickR That's so nice to hear that you and @greenween have kept in touch and continue to trade, and that you met here when Atari I/O was brand new. I'm so happy we attracted a crowd of nice people early on, that really helped set the tone for the community that I was going for.

That's a nice idea about the Discord 🙂 I wouldn't dismiss it outright, because you're right, we can do things to reach a wider audience and bring more people to participate in the Forums, in Chat, and in High Score Squad. @leolinden raised the Discord idea with me a number of years ago and we chatted about it back then to some length.

Our philosophy ever since the inception of this site has been to "play in our own sandbox" -- meaning we don't become distracted by spawning off communities on other sites and services such as Facebook and Discord. There have been a number of reasons for this, namely, we have always wanted to commit every ounce of free time we have to building Atari I/O, staying focused on our creation, our community, building a great site with fun events and lots of reasons to enjoy spending time at Atari I/O, as opposed to spending time on other sites like Facebook. It's rare to be able to create something like what we have here, its a very unique community, and yet pages elsewhere are quite common. Also, it's one more thing that demands attention and time that we can't always commit to, and I don't want to create something like that and leave it unattended.

You always have thoughtful suggestions though Rick and I appreciate them very much. One thing high up on my list that you brought up about a year ago was creating a monthly Atari I/O Newsletter to be sent out. That's something I would like to figure out this coming year if possible.

    4. RickR

      RickR

I can respect all that.  Your decision makes sense.  I've noticed that moderating something like Discord takes time and effort and also making tough decisions.

I don't think the nosweargamer minds me bringing up various atari.io events on his Discord.  Although I'm not sure this has bore any fruit yet (well, maybe a few new visitors that haven't signed up or posted yet), I will continue to do so.

As usual, you let me know what I can do to help.

      Jinroh

Not a kid, but my father was a competitive Pac-Man player at bars in the 80s. That was his game.

A few years later in the mid-80s he and I loved Pole Position for the 2600 and at the Time Out arcade at the mall.

    3. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

While I was amazed by Combat and Space Invaders when I first played them on my uncle's 2600, my first love in gaming was Pac-Man followed closely by Q-bert. I had them for my Gemini and adored them. Megamania was a close third; mainly because the ship reminded me of the Enterprise.

    4. socrates63

      socrates63

Great question… it’s difficult to answer but my first video game loves are all coin-ops: Star Castle, Defender, Robotron. TBH, the 2600 games I played as a kid didn’t grab me as much as the coin-op games.

  14. 👽 There’s a lot of hate for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and yet so many of us have wonderful memories of growing up playing this game. Nothing has left its mark on the legacy of Atari quite like E.T. It may not be the top 2600 game, but it has a lot of heart.

    3. Marco1019

      Marco1019

IIRC, there was a guide for Raiders of the Lost Ark in one of the classic video game magazines. That made it MUCH easier to play and complete, which likely led to its popularity at the time.

  15. 🚘 What’s your favorite thing to bring with you on a summer road trip? Atari Lynx has a small game library, but many of the games are really good! Once things return to normal this will be my 31st summer bringing the Lynx on my summer road trip. I do more driving than riding in the back seat these days, but summer wouldn’t feel complete without rainy afternoons playing California Games, RoadBlasters, Ninja Gaiden or Blue Lightning.

    3. DegasElite

      DegasElite

It is a handy thing to do, and it makes sense. It makes the pad more tactile, in a manner of speaking. There is a tutorial on how to use the wires from the innards of a Pro-Line joystick to make a Europad more responsive on this forum site. Now, I am not saying to cannibalize joysticks to improve the Europads. Maybe, if someone had a non-functional Pro-Line, the wires from that controller could be used to fix a Europad. They can get finicky sometimes, I guess. :O)
