Other ideas for you or any other youtubers here....I'd love to see more "how to" videos for difficult games.  Not a complete walk through, but "how-to" do those parts that aren't easy.  For example, landing the plane in NES Top Gun, or getting a turbo-bump start in SNES F-Zero.

Those are great ideas @RickR! I was trying to do that with TurboGrafx and Duo games a few years ago. It’s not easy to build an audience, but very fun to play games and film videos.

Whatever was transferred over is still on Lvl Up Score.

I'm not sure if Lvl Up will gain users from the old HighScore because the new site was a point of contention among some of the diehards. Again, Lvl Up Score was created as an alternative. We don't exclude anyone just because they prefer another scoring or records site. In fact, a few of the Admins continued to submit to HighScore until very recently.

As for Twin Galaxies, they're still around. The lawsuit & countersuit were settled recently. I'm sure you're aware as many outlets rushed their reporting.

Reminds me of when I added the Forums to Atari I/O :wreck-it-ralph:

Tangentially related: One option that was offered at Lvl Up Score was for HighScore.com gamers to link their accounts so their previous efforts could be ported over. But that's no longer an option, sadly.

I had done that two years ago when you made us aware of Lvl Up. I hope those scores are still there. Lvl Up will have rescued my scores. Hopefully more people will come over to Lvl Up from HighScore.com now that it's gone.

Is anything going on with Twin Galaxies anymore?

  4. I always enjoyed the arcade version of Lunar Lander. It's early but I love the physics. Gravitar, and Thrust+ Platinum from @thrust26 are two favorites. Although Lunar Lander: Beyond has a bit too much of that "flash game" look to it, I really like the added elements shown in the video. Having to "hack" the exit was a cool touch, plus having missions to accomplish and things to do other than landing and refueling is really nice. I feel like this would've made the perfect Lynx game. With any luck, one day maybe it will. I haven't played this game on Steam but I hope to give it a thumbs up if and when it's released on the VCS. I'd be thrilled to see more coming out for the Atari VCS. I worry that 18 months from now things will become dry for the VCS, with Atari's attention focused on the 2600+ and other offerings. Hopefully that won't be the case and the VCS will live a long life with lots of cool games to come.

  5. People love to say “fAiLeD cOnSoLe”. It’s like a meme at this point. NEC briefly made this variant of the PC Engine for the Japanese market and released 5 SuperGrafx games before moving on to the Super CD and Arcade CD which was better technology. They chose a different path. This was fairly common for products at that time to be released in Japan first, almost like a test market. SuperGrafx added an additional GPU that put another layer of graphics into PC Engine games. All but one SuperGrafx games were also PC Engine compatible. I’ve played the SuperGrafx games, they’re cool but I love the Super CD and Arcade CD much better. Of the few decisions NEC got right, the Super CD was a big one.

The 5200 cost Atari literally millions of dollars.  It nearly took the entire company down with it.

You could make that case for the 2600 as well. We're in a different age now and a different market. The 2600+ and this new 400 mini are not competing as industry leaders the way PS5, Xbox and Switch are today.

That's also why I thought it would be far more economical for Atari to roll their modern support for the 5200 format into a new A8+ product.

That would be cool.  I’m surprised that the XEGS didn’t get picked for something like the 400 Mini.  I wonder why that model over the XL or the 800?

I was wondering that too. Maybe they're saving it for later. Maybe they believe the 400 has the most recognition, similar to the 2600. Maybe they think people identify Atari most with the late 1970s and are branding things along those lines. I wonder if they will overlook the 5200 entirely.

Even if it only had the A8 cartridge port that would be enough

I would like to see a cartridge port for both A8 and 5200 so that everyone feels covered. There's going to be someone out there like you, with very fond memories of the 5200 - except they never got into the A8, etc. It would be nice for them to be able to play their cartridges and homebrew releases on a new system with HD output.

I feel like if Atari is going to do this the right way - the way they did the 2060+, that's what they would need to do.

I also hope one day we will see an FPGA-Based 2600+ in a 7800 shell. They could call it the Atari 2600 Pro.

  9. I'm a little underwhelmed that this doesn't have a cartridge port the way the 2600+ does. I've been hoping to see Atari develop an "Atari XE+" with a 4/5 or 3/5 scale Atari XE that incorporates two cartridge ports into the top of the machine - one for Atari 8-Bit Computer cartridges, and the other for Atari 5200 cartridges. I would love that.

Otherwise this looks like a nice product and I hope Atari does well with it.

I wouldn't mind owning that version but I believe it commands a pretty high price these days just like most PCE/TG-16 stuff does.

@CrossBow I was fortunate to get my copy of Loom about 25 years ago from Turbo Zone Direct. The Duo had some truly amazing games and many were completely overlooked for years. I overlooked some of them myself in 1993 because I was so excited for games like Club Drive to come out on the Jaguar that I missed some other great things going on at the time.

If you're just looking for fun games to be able to play, PCE Works offers new repops and box sets of many of these hard to find titles, at good prices. They're very well done and it's essentially like getting a brand new game. They keep their stock updated here:
