MalakZero reacted to The Professor in Video stores are alive and well in Alaska
Video stores are still alive and well in Alaska, thanks to factors stemming from living in remote locations with spotty and expensive internet coverage, and poor streaming. To me, the funny thing is I already knew this but I had never put it all together. I've seen video stores appear in various Alaska-themed shows that I've watched in the past, usually on the Discovery channel. Alaskans even trade VHS tapes enthusiastically.

I'm not a hat guy either, but I will give credit for the current Atari trying to branch out a bit and doing more than just license out their stuff.

This actually reminds me of the early Atari a little, who would constantly try weird, strange and sometimes cool stuff.

Well it is ATARI labeled after all so I guess that makes it a collectible? Truth is I don't wear hats, not a hat guy, this admittedly sucks as there sure have been a lot of hats / caps etc, I would LIKE to of considered over the years. Anyway I am sure most of you are aware of modern "ATARI" as of late (HINT THEY ARE NOT ATARI SO MUCH AS COPYRIGHT CHASERS LOOKING FOR FUNDING) but that all said maybe as simply a collector piece that would sit on the shelf one might consider the new ATARI SPEAKER HAT lol

Laser Blast is now available for sale for the Atari 8-bit computer. This is a port of the Activision 2600 game. Requires 16K of RAM so it will run on any stock Atari 8-bit computer.

I did my own version from scratch and Instead of just doing an exact port of a 2600 game, I wanted something that will take advantage of the Atari 8-bit features like having 4 independent player sprites on a line and higher multicolored resolution for the ground, mountains, and star back ground. This does a parallax effect with back ground and foreground scrolling at different rates giving a nice 3D effect when scrolling between each level. Several variants you will be able to play include 3, 4, or 6 tanks on the ground, alien fighter crafts are also flying above the tanks, and enemies can either shoot lasers or "little bolts" up at your ship.

The release date is Monday, November 28, 2016 that is CyberMonday in the United States.

    The game is available here.

If you have an ancient TV with a horizontal hold, you should be able to adjust it to play PAL games. My parents still had a TV like this when I started collecting in the 90s. I found a PAL game and brought it over there to test it out (I read about it on Usenet) and it worked.

Don't you just love it when you buy a game and find out later it won't play on your system?  Well, I picked up Pitfall! International Edition today wondering if it was from Europe, and sure enough, it was.  The game will only run on a PAL Atari, which I'm sure most people here in North America don't have.  It makes me wonder why this game was here considering Pitfall came out in the US and Canada in NTSC format.

So remember, Pitfall! International Edition is PAL.  How to spot this version is simple.  On the front of the label under "Pitfall!", instead of saying "Pitfall Harry's Jungle Adventure", it'll say "International Edition".

MalakZero reacted to Video 61 in Millipede - working Atari 5200 Prototype
here is my Atari 5200 Millipede prototype for your enjoyment. Asteroids part number is CX5248 and was planned for release by atari in 1984. this is an official original prototype that came out of atari and is not a reproduction game. atari had planned Millipede for the 2600, 400/800, 5200 and 7800. this was a very nice version of Millipede and was a huge improvement over 2600 Millipede. it looked just like the arcade and with the 5200 trak-ball it played just like it too. 5200 Millipede was ready to ship in 1984 with a lot of other 5200 games but Jack Tramiel took over and put the kibosh on it all. would this have been enough to entice 2600 owners to jump ship to the 5200? enjoy,

MalakZero reacted to Sabertooth in Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest for Atari 7800
My schedule recently changed so that I have every other Friday off. Lucky me, I went to the P.O. box this morning to find my long awaited copy of Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest. Starring Bentley Bear of Crystal Castles and Atari Karts fame, this Pokey enhanced game was originally intended for the long-delayed XM add-on. Atari Age and Bob DeCrescenzo finally decided to move forward and put it out with the Pokey chip instead. I've avoided playing the rom via emulator as I wanted to be surprised. Early impressions are that this is one great platformer for a console starved for that genre. It also strikes me as one of the most ambitious homebrews undertaken on the 7800. I can't wait to play more.

Have you played Crystal Quest? What are your thought?

MalakZero reacted to DCG in Altered Beast is underrated
While it's certainly not the best beat em' up game on the Genesis, I feel it deserves more credit.  Mega ranked it as the worst Mega Drive game!  I'm guessing they hadn't seen Action 52 on Genesis or Shaq Fu.  I played Altered Beast for the first time yesterday, and thought it was pretty cool.  It wasn't perfect, and I especially hate how the drums get cut off for several seconds after punching an enemy (meaning you rarely hear the drums), but the game was solid and a good port of the arcade original.  What are your thoughts on Altered Beast?

So I bought these joysticks, which were labeled Atari 7800 joysticks, but are not (both buttons do the same thing).
They have proline look with a diamond texture on top that is almost painful to touch. On the bottom it just says, Made in Taiwan. The knob is pretty big and heavy, while the base is pretty light.
Any idea who made these or what they are called?

MalakZero reacted to peteym5 in Jungle Quest new Platform game Work in Progress for Atari 8-Bit Computers
Jungle Quest is a Platform Game for Atari 8-bit computer.  I am working on resurrecting this program that I started ten years ago. I was very far along with the game when I accidentally erased a partition on my hard drive. I had to recover a less complete copy from an old back up disk. It originally started writing the game MAC/65, then I ported it over to Mad Assembler so development can be done on my Windows PC and emulators.

I was originally making this game before I knew Video61 and Kjmann. It started as being a TurboBasic XL game with ML routines, the Turbo Basic  parts got translated to full assembly. It originally was going to be a 130XE/Extended RAM Game. Then this guy Video 61 knew texted me, and asked if I can do this "Battle Squadron" game and see if we can make it on cartridge. I was still doing games with MAC/65 at the time, and barely knew how full executable and cartridge games were put together. Later we dropped Battle Squadron to do Tempest. I was talking about doing the game on AtariAge and some like the ideal of extended memory, but many still want to play on a 64K machine, stated why I don't do the game on these 128k Cartridges. Now I am still figuring out what I did ten years ago and adapt more modern programming techniques into the game like multiplexing, compression, RMT music and sound, etc.

I also made this game more colorful and pushed the Atari to its limits in response to the whole "Commodore 64 vs Atari 8-bit" feud that went on for 464 pages and over 11,000 posts on AtariAge back in 2008 through 2009. Wanted to put something together that can show what our great Atari does over the Commodore 64.
