MaximumRD reacted to RickR in eBay Finds
A "bucket list" item for me. It's the Sears version of Atari Stunt Cycle. And it works. It's very dirty and it needs some repair. But it's complete and works well.
I will say that I found myself oddly smiling and giggling while playing this thing. Took me back -- better than any time machine.
I'm going to clean it up as well as I can and hold on to this mofo.

MaximumRD reacted to RickR in Let's all play...Star Raiders
I loved it as a kid too. And it would be a few more years before I laid my hands on the 8-bit version (although the 8-bit version came out much earlier). But I'm sorry to say...there are some games that just didn't age well for me personally. Another game like that is "Raiders of the Lost Ark". I thought it was a lot of fun when it came out and spent hours figuring it out. But now....no thanks.

MaximumRD reacted to RickR in Let's all play...Star Raiders
I will say that Star Raiders on 8-bit is one of my all-time favorites, and this version is simply not anywhere near as good. There's just so much more to the game that they stripped out. The galactic map is pretty much pointless here. So small, and your ship follows the aliens no matter what. No steering during hyperwarp. No speed control to hunt down the aliens. No docking ship. No aft view. No overhead map. Even aiming and shooting here just seem random and hard to control instead of smooth and intuitive.
They tried. They got the look down. They probably kept as much as they could. But 8-bit Star Raiders is a classic, a killer-app that sold computers, a game I still love to this day.
I did buy this version back in '82, and was really excited then to have it. The keypad was cool. But even then, the game kind of didn't hit the mark for me. I still have that copy. But sadly threw away the boxes. Dang it.
Compare it to Star Master or Star Voyager and let me know what you think.

Well, I gathered up a cart and a keypad. I read the manual on-line (Krylons??? What happened to Zylons? Are these spray painting graffiti aliens?). I've put the difficulty switches on "A" so that I control the computer and shields from my keypad...I'm ready.
You first hyperwarp to the alien sector. Then both you and the aliens progress towards the starbase with no input needed. Kill them all before they get to the starbase! It's hard...there's no speed control. Aliens just kind of show up at random. Not really as smooth and easy to control as the 8-bit version. Just blast away randomly I guess.
My first game, I wasn't able to save the starbase and ended up with the ranking of "Pilot 3".
Is it a good game? Sorry. No. StarMaster and Star Voyager are both better. M-Network Space-Attack is better. Phaser Patrol is a ton better. It's cool that it came with the keypad controller and all. But it's a pale comparison to 8-bit or 5200 Star Raiders. A for effort, but ultimately, not a great game.
What do you all think?

MaximumRD got a reaction from Lost Dragon in Random items with woodgrain
Well this is fun. Was not sure it counted but the dressers, stands and night table are all definitely not wood but particle board coated with a plastic faux woodgrain, I actually have a couple wooden dressers so took me a second to realize the difference. The tables / stand / dressers I guess I cannot claim they were made to appear wooden for no reason, clearly it was done to appear we had better furniture than one could actually afford but I included them anyway as I don't think I had given much thought to how many things we had that still had this style.
My particle board Bedroom dresser (wife's is actually wood)
An old stand from my single days now stuck in corner of bedroom holding my "extras"
Old Stereo system / TV stand (The sides would have been for record albums) now holds all the plush toys my
wife has collected over the years.
One of two night tables.
Of COURSE the obligatory Clock Radio (mines a GE lol)
My two 2600 woody's
Lastly, this is my vanilla 5200 VCS adaptor (I have a second that was modded for stand alone use) and I was board
and had a little woodgrain Mak Tak so....yeah.......

MaximumRD reacted to Justin in After 23 years, the Apple II gets another OS update
Yesterday, software developer John Brooks released what is clearly a work of pure love: the first update to an operating system for the Apple II computer family since 1993. ProDOS 2.4, released on the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the Apple II GS, brings the enhanced operating system to even older Apple II systems, including the original Apple ][ and ][+.
Which is pretty remarkable, considering the Apple ][ and ][+ don't even support lower-case characters.
You can test-drive ProDOS 2.4 in a Web-based emulator set up by computer historian Jason Scott on the Internet Archive. The release includes Bitsy Bye, a menu-driven program launcher that allows for navigation through files on multiple floppy (or hacked USB) drives. Bitsy Bye is an example of highly efficient code: it runs in less than 1 kilobyte of RAM. There's also a boot utility that is under 400 bytes—taking up a single block of storage on a disk.

That's strange, they weighed it and shipped it rather than doing the flat rate? Saving 10 bucks is great.
Nice picks too

Yeah, that's what happened. LJ07 originally posted about this in the Atari 2600 section, but I politely pointed out the fact that MaximumRD already beat him to it. I guess the two threads got merged afterwards. -
