Wow... at the 27:50 mark or so of Justin's video.  I've never seen the ship regenerate those guns like that.  I either die too fast or kill it.  lol
But yeah, second boss strategy in the vid is exactly what I do.
On first boss, I position my ship further up on the screen (even with that eyeball up there), but otherwise the same.
Third boss I haven't completely figured out yet.  😃

This is just like those after-school meet ups with friends in the 1980's...take turns playing and learn from each other what to do and what to try.  So much fun!  I love this game.

    CONGRATS @RickR!!
That's exactly what I was about to recommend. I'm glad you saw that in the video! Easier demonstrated than explained. Carefully park your ship in that little spot and hang on tight. If you can do that and are powered with some decent power ups you should be alright.

Here is my Instagram Livestream from Friday night. I wasn't able to top my score but was able to play through the game to Stage 3 a few times. Good luck everybody!

I finished Fallout 3 yesterday. I thought I had finished that 5 years ago, but I had one more DLC pack left to complete.
I played it via the Xbox One's backwards compatibility & I didn't realize it was One X enhanced. It looks incredible!

I started playing this on Christmas Day 2008 & finished it off yesterday. As if I needed another reminder that I'm ancient. 😀

Ooo... Didn't realize there was one of these topics here...  I put a post up in the TurboGrafx section, but might as well throw it over here, too.  I beat Blazing Lazers the other day for the first time in years.  Was down to three lives and a completely powered down ship when I killed the last boss.  Here's some pics.

Took a break from playing R-Type and popped in Blazing Lazers.  I think playing so much R-Type gave me practice because I beat Blazing Lazers for the first time in years.  No continues.  Didn't think I'd do it as I was running out of lives... ended up killing the last boss with the pea shooter.  😃

Also, although I'm no expert at this game... here's some tips that helped me out...
    1.  Turbo fire.  It's on the real TurboGrafx controller, so I use it.  I know you can do charged shots and all, but that just seems distracting to me and if you have the turbo on level 3 for button II, you can mow through most things pretty easily without bothering with charging shots.  If you're playing with an emulator, you may be at a disadvantage.  The emulators I've used at least, while they have an option for turbo fire, it's at a different frequency or does bursts then pauses, then bursts.  The third level turbo fire on the real hardware pretty much gives you a steady stream of bullets out the front of your ship.
    2.  Use your pod.  Pressing button I shoots your pod out from your ship.  Pressing button I again, brings it back to you.  While away from your ship, the pod continues to fire, and if you've got it leveled up to the second level, it fires in four directions.  This can help destroy enemies that are hiding behind walls or around corners.  Also, the pod itself is indestructible, so the pod itself can be a weapon and shield.  Use this...  get handy with switching it from the front of your ship to the back... use it to kill enemies coming from behind or to block bullets.  Shoot it into the weak point of bosses and keep firing and let it do the dirty work.  On the first boss, there's a weak point in its middle... shoot that bod in there, then move your ship up to the top of the screen (kind of in front of its eye) and keep firing.  The boss can't hit you there, and he'll (he?) will go down quickly.  On the second boss, the weak point is an eye that opens up on top.  Put your pod on the front of your ship and nestle down right next to it so that every time it opens, the pod is hitting it, and just sit there firing.  Gotta play with the hitboxes some to get in there as it doesn't look like it's possible, but it works... does take a bit of finesse, though.
    3.  Memorization.  R-Type is definitely a memorization type of shooter.  Knowing where the enemies are going to come from and getting ready to shoot them before they come on screen is super helpful.  This isn't a game where you should react to things, this is a game where you plan.  Trial and error in unfamiliar stages will help you learn patterns and which weapon you want to have.  For example, I used the blue ricochet type lasers (blue powerup) exclusively for the first three levels, but it seems that the red and blue forward lasers (red powerup) are better for level 4.  So near the end of level 3, I picked up the red powerup... so I'd have it at the beginning of 4.  But I didn't know to do that until I got to level 4 a few times and figured out the blue weapons wasn't that helpful.

May have figured out the third level a bit... gotten past it twice now in the last couple of days... funny thing is, it's actually hurt my high score some.  I could usually get almost all the way to the end of the third level before dying.  And I could do that with the subsequent lives, also.  So I had essentially, level 1, level 2, and level 3 about three times.  But since I'm so unfamiliar with level 4, I could get hardly anywhere in it.   So it became level 1, level 2, level 3, and the beginning of level 4 three times.  Don't know if that makes any sense, but doing 95% of level 3 three times got me more points than 100% of level 3 and 10% of level 4 three times.  Anyway, this morning I started to figure out level 4...  and got a new high score for this challenge.  Then I used continues and figured out level 4 more and for the first time ever got to the boss!  Anyway, my new high score for this challenge is now 167900.  I've gotten higher in the past (broke the 200000 mark once), but this is the high so far for here.

Got past the third level in one ship (I kept resetting if I died, lol).  Anyway, didn't last long in the fourth level.  It's so hard to get to it that I have no practice in it.  Anyway, new high score for me.

I go through periods where I don't play anything for several weeks at a time... but I feel it averages out to once a week or several times a week.  Usually play something on Saturday.  Weekdays just seem too hectic.

Took a trip to the big city today and visited an arcade. Lots of classic arcade games set to free play. Pay $10 (plus tax) at the door and play all you want. I went in planning to write down all the games I played, but I quickly lost track. I got the high score on Ms Pac Man, though!  (Okay, they had probably recently reset the scores, so it didn’t take much. But several people played after I did and none of them beat me, so there!  lol)  I realized afterward that I should have taken more pics, but I was having too much fun playing!

And as an added bonus, we saw a Vista Cruiser station wagon in the parking lot when we were leaving.  Just like the one in That 70s Show!

Here's pics of my Intellivision stuff...  Got all of this from a coworker.  It was literally one of those, "Look what I found in my mom's attic" kind of deals.  He tried selling it all to a local game store, but didn't like their offer then he came to me.  I told him he should have come to me first.  lol  I offered him $50 and he accepted.  Then I found out that I could only get $40 out as cash at the register, so I told him I'd owe him the other 10 and he said not to worry about it.  The $40 was already over twice what the game store offered him.  😃

(Sorry the pics aren't that great... need to take updated ones.  These are on my old apartment's kitchen floor and the dark color tile wasn't a good choice for a background.)
