Last Saturday, I went to PAX West with my son. I wasn't planning to go this year, but when I found out that there was a panel featuring Ken and Roberta Williams, I had to go. The panel was titled Adventure Games: Heroes and Legends. The Williams were joined by Jane Jensen, Al Lowe, Ron Gilbert, and Dave Gilbert. I took this photo before the panel started. They all masked up once they started speaking. The lady on the far left is the local gamer who organized the panel.
To be honest, I've never played a King's Quest game. However, I remember seeing it on my friend's PC Jr. back in the day. I have played the first Gabriel Knight and first Leisure Suit Larry games. Besides those, I have not (yet) played any of the other games made by these legends of adventure gaming.
It was a fanboy thrill to see these folks. I got in line about 90 minutes before the panel started in order to ensure myself a good seat. It was a good thing I did that because the place was packed.
These gaming industry legends and their works are an inseparable part of my childhood, and I cherish them for that alone. I wish I could have gotten a photo with them, but oh well. This will have to do (for now).

We welcomed "Babytooth Retro" into the world this morning just before 6:00 am. Mom and baby girl are healthy and sleeping. I'm taking the time to improve my swaddle.  😅
I may not be as active in the coming weeks but will keep ClubVCS rolling.

I just had a very fun interaction and a brief travel down Memory Lane 🙂
Back in the 80s, I was friends with a guy name George. He had an older brother and two younger sisters. It turned out that the older of the two sisters lives in my neighborhood and ours kids attended the same school and our kids have become very close lately. She and her son just walked to my house to give me a box of pears as a thank you for taking her son (and my son) to the airport this Sunday for their high school graduation trip to California.
We had a short chat on the porch, and she randomly mentions this small black box with a TV screen and that I had lent it to her brother back in the 80s (I don't recall lending it to him), and she and her sister played the heck out of it. I knew immediately what she was talking about and brought out my Vectrex. Her eyes beamed. I had never known that she was into playing games. She was very shy and I had never heard her say anything when we were kids. She said she never forgot it, and it was a very positive part of her childhood. Her family did not have computers nor video games. I told her that I'd lend it to her again, so she can relive those days.
So random and unexpected but so cool! And it was our kids who brought us together for this chat.

It finally feels like summer in Seattle -- sunny and mid 70s yesterday and 80 today. What better way to kick off summer the American 🇺🇸 way than firing up the grill? I hosted a burger party for about a doze teens and their leaders from my church on Friday. It's always fun to see young people have a good time, but it can tire you out 🙂
A funny side note, my grilling set off the smoke alarm in the house behind us 😂 They had the door to their backyard open, and closed it once they figured out what was going on. Houses are built so close to one another.

Really sad news via Marty Goldberg on Facebook:
It is with great sadness I announced the passing of Atarian Regan Cheng on April 4th after a two year battle with cancer. Regan was 1/2 of the world's first video game industrial design team consisting of him and Pete Takaichi under the leadership of George Faraco. Joining in 1972 while both were still pursuing a degree from San Jose State University, the duo designed Pong-In-A-Barrel as their first project before moving on to work on the infamous Gotcha cabinet. and a slew of others. Ronald Wayne (who would later go on to co-found Apple) went on to manage them after George's departure and by 1975 they were crucial to Atari's coin cabinet designs helping carve out Atari's unique look and feel in the arcades and were joined by Clint Graham, Phil Kearney, and Carl Lepinne. Iconic looking games like Night Driver, Evel Knievel and more.
Back in those days everything was done by hand, no modern CAD or design software. As Regan recalled last year regarding the days when Atari used off the shelf TV's in it's arcade games: "I recall us design guys creating the card board bezels to custom fit to each new TV. Took a while to do. We would trace the final pattern and give to a die cutting shop to make production parts. What a kick. Now we would use 3D CAD and 3D print . It was a kick."
Also in 1975 Regan became involved in Atari's foray into consumer products with Home PONG. By the early 80s he had left the Coin Division and was responsible for helping craft the futuristic look of Atari's home offerings like the Atari 5200 and their XL line of computers and products like the Atari 2600s Star Raiders controller as well as the phone products in Atari's pioneering AtariTel division.
Leaving Atari in 1983, he continued to play a role in Silicon Valley going on to work for such companies as Sigen Corporation, NAMCO, Data East, Global VR and Google (in their Google Fiber group). Regan is survived by his son, sister Donna, and a brother.
All product photos courtesy of the Atari Museum. Read more about Regan's contributions in Atari Inc- Business Is Fun and Tim Lapetino's book Art of Atari.

WOW 😳 Just opened a box marked "board games" that had been sealed for 20 years and found these badboys timecapsuled inside. These are from 2000-2001 when this website had a web store offering new Atari systems, games & accessories.

Our local library has a "for sale" section where all books/cd's/DVD's are 50 cents and magazines are free.  Today, they had a big stack of Nintendo Power from 2010/11/12, so I grabbed three at random.

A year or so ago I came up with the idea of a gaming battle jacket. (If you grew up in punk and metal, you know what this is.) I was struggling with a theme until Atari's new Recharged series.
Here are the first pieces coming together! Recharged buttons and a Missile Command Recharged back patch!
Now to sew on this ginormous patch!

Popped into a vintage shop today and saw a few fun things. A Six Million Dollar Man board game, a WWF glass set, an Andre the Giant glass beer mug.
There was also a Lynx II behind glass but couldn't get a clean photo or price.
I picked something up but will post that in pickups.
Love this kind of stuff in the wild.

🍄 I never understood the hate against resurrecting old topics. If you have something new & interesting to add to the conversation, I welcome it! We can only have so many different threads about the same topics. After 40 years there can only be so many duplicate E.T. threads, so many Pac-Man threads, etc. I say go for it!
