  1. Anybody have Atari Flashback Classics for switch? I just got it from the library. I’d love to play some online Atari with you guys!

      They come on cartridges!

I can’t begin to tell you guys how much I HATE that we’re moving away from physical media.

Thanks, Harry.  I know I've asked before, but is there a model of Switch I should avoid?  I think you said to avoid the cheaper model that does not have the detachable joy-slidey things, as they tend to break after a year.

    4. HDN

      HDN

      Yeah. Avoid the “lite” model.

  2. “Summer! It turns me upside down. SUMMER! It’s like a merry-go-round!” Every time i hear the word “summer”, I’ll always think of the song Magic by The Cars. My summer of 2017 was fueled by their greatest hit compilation. I listened to that thing on cassette 24/7 (this was back before my Walkman broke). Sadly, I never really listened to any of their actual albums and I still haven’t. I do have that greatest hit collection on CD nowadays, though. I ought to listen to that for a nostalgia trip soon.

I would have to go with Ric, as most if not all of those songs on that cassette featured him on lead vocals. He had such a distinct voice.

I almost picked up a Cars album once a few years ago at the record store, but decided against it for whatever reason. I’ll have to borrow some from the library or something and listen to more of their stuff sometime.

      RickR

Interesting.  When I (and they) were young, I preferred Ric too.  But as I aged, Benjamin Orr is my favorite.  I remember being so sad and shocked when he passed away too young. Let's see...just from memory:  "Just What I Needed", "It's All I Can Do".  OK, I think I know what will be on my playlist this weekend.

There's no right/wrong answer.  They both are great.

I never did see The Cars live.  Maybe they were part of one of the big "Live Aid" shows?  But that was on TV, so doesn't count.  I'm glad you brought this up, as it's good to remember.

If your library has some, you should.  These guys were one of the great bands that pulled New Wave music more into the mainstream.

  3. Happy summer, Io! It’s been busy these last few months, but I’m BACK! Expect to see me a lot.

  4. What happened to the Squad Challenges? Is everything okay? I've noticed we haven't had one in months and I'm a little concerned. Is Justin okay?

@HDN, all is fine, as far as I know.  But this is a reminder:  As in life in general, enjoy the good while it's there.  Take care of friends -- even just to say hello.  I think we all know full well that life is full of ups and downs.  People like you and me must keep the IO spirit alive while the boss is busy.

Thanks, Gianna, for telling us about Justin. We were concerned about him. :O)

  5. So I was watching the F-R-I-E-N-D-S reunion and apparently a dude named David Crane worked on it? So THAT'S what he did after the Atari days were over!

And yes, I know Friends's Crane was a different person. But he's not as cool as our Dave Crane!

  8. Does anyone here have a Nintendo DSi that is not in working order? If so, please DM me and we may be able to work something out. My system has a faulty battery and the one I ordered off Amazon doesn’t work. I’d rather source one from an original system than risk Amazon again. Thanks.

    1. RickR

      RickR

I hope you're getting a refund for the non-working item from Amazon.

Try ebay.  I've had good luck there (look for sellers with high ratings).

  9. @MaximumRD love the new profile picture.

  10. Please excuse me if I haven't been posting as often as I used to recently. Life has been in the way a little bit. Being back in school and all, I don't have as much free time as I used to! Expect more HDN posts once the school year is over.

  11. I've become addicted to Animal Crossing: Wild World on the DS... again! What do you guys think of the game? Have you ever played it? Have you ever played ANY Animal Crossing game (please do if you haven't)?

I'm thinking of blogging about one of the AC games soon. New Leaf is one of the most sacred games to me, along with Super Metroid and Luigi's Mansion.

I was playing some Princess Rescue yesterday. I love when I get to play new Mario games since I’ve beaten all the 2D ones I have. It’s crazy that they got it to work with two buttons on the Genesis pad. Worlds 3 and 4 were super hard!

  15. Listeners of the Atari 2600 Game by Game Podcast may know that the 200th episode was released the other day. There were a few contests and giveaways from different people to mark the occasion, and I was fortunate enough to win one of them. My prize? A beautiful 2600 Unocart. You all have no idea how amazing this is! Now I can play ALL my 2600 games on original hardware! To a broke teenager like myself, this is amazing. I'm very fortunate. Thanks to Doug for hosting the giveaway, and congrats to the two other winners!

That is awesome!  Congrats.  The UnoCart is really good, and I'm sure you're going to love it.  And Doug Venner is a really great and nice person.  Make sure to subscribe to his YouTube channel.  I like his videos a lot, and he deserves a lot more subscribers.

Tip:  Get the Rom Hunter pack of roms here:  http://www.atarimania.com/rom_collection_archive_atari_2600_roms.html

I'm sure you already have them all, but this pack is special because they are pre-arranged in logical folders and will be usable on the UnoCart (or Harmony) just by unzipping to an SD card.

I’m already subscribed! You’re right though, he has some very good videos there.

What’s all in the Rom Hunter pack? Just released games or home brews as well?

    3. RickR

      RickR

I don't think there are any homebrews, but it's the entire 2600 commercial library in both raw and arranged forms.

  16. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU @nosweargamer FOR THE MAGICAL MYSTERY ODYSSEY 2 GAME PACKAGE! My dad sends his thanks as well. It was an awesome surprise and my dad was really happy to get Alpine Skiing after 40 years! I was really excited that we got Alien Invaders Plus, one of my favorite games on the system. We also played some War of Nerves and Armored Encounter, which was a lot of fun.

  18. I wonder what the arcade ports of Pac-Man, DK, etc would look like had early (80-84) Activision done them for the 2600.

    1. socrates63

      socrates63

Well, the 2600 version of Donkey Kong was done by an Activision co-founder Garry Kitchen in 1982. It seems the business constraints trickled down to constrain project resources (reduced memory size, development schedule). I'm not sure Activision developers would have done any better given the same requirements. Here's a Donkey Kong making-of written by Garry Kitchen himself.

Similarly with Pac-Man, if the non-game designers would not dictate game design requirements (only space games can have black background), we'd have a better game.

  19. Hey guys, look! My dad has been reunited with his childhood system, the Odyssey 2! Only other person I know who grew up with one is @nosweargamer. This thing rocks! I love it so much!
My dad is looking for a few games in particular. If anyone has duplicates for the system, please DM me.

@nosweargamer anything he had as a kid, like Armored Encounter/Sub Chase, War of Nerves, Matchmaker/Logix/Buzzword, Volleyball, Pocket Billiards, and Computer Golf. That’s all I can remember now. He also wants Alpine Skiing, which he said he always wanted as a kid but never got.

As for me, I’m pretty happy with what I have right now for the time being. Eventually I’d like to get Alien Invaders Plus, KC’s Krazy Chase, and ESPECIALLY Electronic Table Soccer. But for right now, I’m pretty pleased with what we all have.

What an awesome system this is!

@nosweargamer seems like the type of collector to have duplicates of Air Raid.

In all seriousness, thanks for looking.

  20. GUYS, OUR ODYSSEY 2 FINALLY SHOWED UP AT THE GAME STORE! WE’RE FINALLY GETTING AN ODYSSEY 2!!!!!!! WAHHOOOOOO!

  21. Goodbye, Woody. You were a great little system. I had you for only a year but we got to know each other so well. Now you must go back to your original owner. Farewell.

      Atari 5200 Guy

I had the 5200 Star Raiders long before I ever seen the 2600 version.  So playing Star Raiders on the 2600 was a major setback for me.  Not that I didn't like it as I knew the 2600 could never handle anything like what I was use to.  It wasn't as good as what I was use to in my opinion.

    4. AtariSphinx

      AtariSphinx

Of the several cockpit view space games on 2600, Starmaster is my favorite as it had well balanced action, map screen,  and shooting mechanics.  Star Voyager though being the simplest is really fun but there is something cool about having the map and feeling like you are in a cockpit which is why I still gravitate towards Star Raiders with that touchpad though it is limited.

However I did recently try the 8bit version of Star Raiders and that just perfects everything.   Definitely my all time favorite now of this genre.  If you like those other games on 2600 you will love the 8bit version.

  24. Wish me luck on this Starmaster contest I'm a part of. If I win, I might be able to win the first ever USED copy of Circus Convoy. So far in I'm in the lead, but it's anyone's game with two days left. Knock on wood.
