  1. I would recommend both DK and DK JR to people just starting out. Now if only they made a Donkey Kong 3 port for the system...
  2. I need to add that to my collection. Speaking of revamped arcade conversions on GB, I heard that version of Lock & Chase is pretty good as well.
  3. This somewhat reminds me of Micronics. They were a ghost developer that were involved in several terrible NES arcade conversions like 1942 and Ghosts n Goblins. People have also speculated this was a one man operation as well.
  4. Thanks! I'm not a 5200 owner myself, but I bet this would be very useful to those here on the site.
  5. @Justin I respect your opinion. However, the fruits never were a big problem for me. There aren't very many enemies at the same time in this version, much less in the same vertical space. To me, the fruits were all about multi-enemy combo bonuses. There would be little incentive to using the fruits in this game even if they were there.
  6. Today I am going to attempt a repair on my 1979 Entex electronic Soccer game! I've had this thing forever and it's been broken for as long as I can remember. One of the directional buttons functions intermittently. I think it needs a good scrub with some rubbing alcohol. I've fixed similar problems on NES and Atari 2600 controllers before. Wish me luck!
  7. @RickR Donkey Kong is great! People say it doesn't increase in difficulty, but I've found that after a while the barrels move a little faster and the fireballs move more erratically. The barrels don't matter much because I believe the game only ever has one per girder, but the fireballs in the later levels are devious!
  8. Donkey Kong Jr. is infamous for being a terrible port, though I don't think it deserves it. The graphics aren't great(Junior looks like a bootleg Homer Simpson and DK has a cardboard box for a head), and there's no fruit to drop, but I feel it is a good enough port for 1983. What are your thoughts on this classic Nintendo arcade game's VCS port?
  9. Froggo licensed out other companies games and repackaged them for the 2600, but turned it around and made original titles for the 7800? It reminds me of how Majesco licensed the Sega Genesis to make the Genesis 3. What was up with this crazy company? Let's talk about it.
  10. This guy is doing a chronology on the 2600 Jeremy Parish style. Thought some of you might be interested. Here's a link FYI I am in no way affiliated with this guy, I'm just a fan
  11. @RickR Cool! I have never been to the west coast but I would like to someday! What I have been doing the past few years is going to see all the ones in my state whenever I'm near one. I have probably seen over 30 here
  12. Good for you! I hope he enjoyed it!
  13. Wanted: lighthouse fanatics I don't know why, but I've always loved Lighthouses. Here in Wisconsin, we have tons of lighthouses along lake michigan. I read somewhere a while back that Door County was one of the most lighthouse-dense places on earth, but don't quote me on that. I don't know, I've just always found lighthouses interesting.
  14. I'm always looking for people to talk about my favorite band with. I love the Beatles! In fact, I even saw Sir Paul live in concert last year! If anyone wants to talk anything Fab Four related, just let me know!
  15. Hello everybody! It's me, HDN! I've been collecting for the original Nintendo Game Boy for five years this month. It's truly a great little system that deserves more attention. It seems people only talk about the retro Nintendo home consoles nowadays and people rarely ever cover the handhelds, though they always sold more than their respective gen's home system. Today, we are going to cover a few great Game Boy games you need in your collection. We won't be talking GBA or GBC here, just the original DMG games. Without further ado... Alleyway This isn't really a must-have, but I thought it was worth mentioning. This is by far the best controlling Breakout style game I've played that uses a d-pad. It was a bit antiquated even at release; Arkanoid was a few years old at the time and this title falls more in line with Super Breakout. Nonetheless it's a pretty good time killer. I'm pretty sure @nosweargamer reviewed this on his channel. Castlevania: The Adventure Ok, ok, I know this game is hated but I quite enjoy it. It pales in comparison to its NES brethren, but if you look at it as its own thing it's not terrible for a 1989 portable platformer. Sure, it's a little sluggish, but it's not unplayable. If you find it for a good price, I'd recommend it. It's worth the money for the soundtrack alone. Super Mario Land 1&2 I'm bunching these together for time'a sake. These had no involvement from Mario creator S. Miyamoto, and in turn the games are incredibly out of place in the Mario universe. I won't go into too much detail about the games themselves. What I will say is that SML1 is more similar to the original SMB on NES and 2 is more like Mario World or SMB3. More people seem to like the sequel more but I personally prefer the '89 original. They're Mario games, they're excellent, and you know this. Tetris Y'all know what this is. I refuse to say anything more. TLOZ: Link's Awakening This might be the best game on the system. It is also the first 8-bit Zelda game to have aged well. So well in fact, they changed almost nothing for the 2019 remake. However, if you don't mind switching items constantly by pausing the game, buy the original. It's not worth $60 for a 6 hour GB game in HD. Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters This is a great little game. If you've never played a 2D Kid Icarus game, it plays a bit like a cross between Zelda and Mario but not quite Metroid. This game is almost identical to the NES version but with a few improvements to make it the better package. Plus, it saves. Get this if you've never played a Kid Icarus game before or are looking for a good platformer on the GB. Donkey Kong Basically DK with 97 new levels and elements of SMB2 and acrobatics similar to the future Super Mario 64. There are boss battles, levels with keys and locked doors, levels where you just go to Pauline, etc. The poster child for the Super Game Boy, basically. A true must-have game that I somehow only have on the 3DS Virtual Console as of right now. Those are a few games I recommend! I know I left some out, like Pokemon for instance, but to be honest I don't quite feel like writing more. If you need a GB compatible system, I would recommend a non-micro Game Boy Advance machine or a Super Game Boy. SGB enhanced games won't work on GBA, GBC, or GB player. I would say get the Super GB just to test the waters if you're only looking to play original GB games. They usually run about $15 here in the US. Hope you found this list helpful. The world always needs more Game Boy collectors. Now you too can play with Portable Power!
  16. @RickR You are 100% correct. Playing Breakout or Pong-style games on modern consoles is pointless. Paddle games are the #1 reason to get a real Atari 2600-compatible system.
  17. I believe this came out in 1986 at Radio Shack. It's a pretty cool little tabletop. It reminds me of Radar Scope mixed with Star Strike and a little bit of Street Racer & Speedway on Odyssey 2. I got this about a year ago and haven't played in a while. I'll have to put the batteries back in at some point. I remember it being pretty fun. Did anyone have this? Sorry if the picture is a little blurry and bad. It's the big one in the center.
  18. Never played Warlords on original hardware strangely. I played it on Atari Anthology on Xbox a while back and didn't care much for it. I bet it would be better with paddles; I felt a similar way about Kaboom before I got the cart. I'll have to pick that up at my local game store the next time I go. Maybe if I'm lucky I can find it CIB for the same price (they do that sometimes there for some reason).
  19. It's funny how an Atari 2600 game is considered expensive if it's over $10. I wish the SNES or NES were that cheap. The 2600 is in my opinion the easiest and most fun retro console to collect for. The nostalgia boom for that console is over so the games are not in high demand. It's the perfect time to start collecting.
  20. I'm adding a few: Air/Sea Battle Space Invaders
  21. Fusion was good. Zero Mission was OK. Super Metroid is the best game ever!
  22. Video Olympics! How could we forget? Ice Hockey with Speed-Up all the way!
  23. Miniature Golf is an underrated game. It's fun single player but more fun with another person. Also Outlaw.
