  1. Adventure is a fantastic game in all respects. Truly one of the greats. But let’s not overlook Superman, which was made using the same “engine”. It’s not as polished or popular nowadays, but once you figure it out it’s a blast of a game.
  2. I wonder what the arcade ports of Pac-Man, DK, etc would look like had early (80-84) Activision done them for the 2600.

Well, the 2600 version of Donkey Kong was done by an Activision co-founder Garry Kitchen in 1982. It seems the business constraints trickled down to constrain project resources (reduced memory size, development schedule). I'm not sure Activision developers would have done any better given the same requirements. Here's a Donkey Kong making-of written by Garry Kitchen himself.

Similarly with Pac-Man, if the non-game designers would not dictate game design requirements (only space games can have black background), we'd have a better game.

  3. By the way, @socrates63, here’s River Raid. 27,290
  4. I remember an old show that I used to catch the beginning few seconds of my DVR’d Scooby Doo Where Are You episodes on the channel Boomerang, which played a bunch of old cartoons. When I first played Private Eye, I thought it was based off this mystery show. Now I know that Private Eye wasn’t affiliated with any particular TV show nor was one made based on the game. What show was this?
  5. I do, yes. But there will still be the matter of getting the 10,000 pound box in the basement, and with my parents home 24/7 until May that will be difficult. I’ll just wait until then.
  6. Thanks @RickR. I’ll try that. Maybe I should just hook up my flatscreen finally. It’s been sitting down there for months but I haven’t been motivated to hook it up yet. I much prefer to play the older games on CRTs, and 99% of games I play on a regular basis are old. I could do what I did in the past where I hooked up a small CRT next to the big TV, but it’s not as good as a big one. Craigslist has a Trinitron near me for free but my parents don’t want to be bothered with helping me pick it up. It sucks not being able to drive.
  7. I need some help, guys: My CRT has some problems nowadays that it didn’t use to have before. I’ve put up with these issues for a few months now but I’m starting to reach the end of my rope! What the TV does is shut itself off when there is no signal, which it has not done in the past. The real problem is even if I turn the system on before the TV, if the game itself is too dark (ie a black background), the TV will also shut itself off. What I have to do is turn on something bright (like the blue screen of a VCR) and let the TV warm up for 10-30 minutes before I can play something with a dark background. Does anyone know what might be causing this and if there is a way to fix it?
  8. Thought I’d show the 2600 collection.
  9. Well I just a few days ago finally listened to it (I have had the record in my collection for some time) and I must say it’s going to be in my head for a long while now.
  10. I'll accept that Alien Invaders Plus is a knock off, but Pick Axe Pete? No way! It's so different than Donkey Kong. It's about as much of a rip off of Donkey Kong as Donkey Kong was a rip off of Space Panic. Which is to say, not much.
  11. Rick Rolling was before my time. It was this past summer when it got reasonably big again when I started doing it. I love stupid garbage like this. But yeah, far and away the GBA is the most clever way to do it!
  12. The main drawback with this game for sure
  13. The Odyssey 2, man. I've heard nothing but good things about this system my entire life, as this is what my dad had as a kid. We got one just the other day and we're having a great time with it. I would have to disagree a bit. Magnavox gets points for being creative with their clones. Look at Alien Invaders Plus next to other Space Invaders clones of the time like TI Invaders and Space Armada. Those are a lot more clone-like than the Odyssey rendition, which almost seems like its own thing (almost). I myself rather enjoy Alien Invaders, but I can totally see why many would not. It has its quirks. I personally don't mind the one life aspect of most games very much, but again I can see why many wouldn't care for it. Though I'll give you Demon Attack. Yuck! It's a terrible game from the same system that gave us Attack of the Timelord. But Atlantis makes up for it. Atlantis on the O2 is amazing. Just OK?!?! Dude! You commited Odyssey 2 treason! I'm kidding of course, but I think this game is seriously great! I don't have the Voice yet, but I think its still an amazing cartridge. I love the gameplay and really wish there was a decent version for the 2600 that captured that. Without the voice, I have to make my own, and that's a surefire way to get weird looks from your parents and siblings. One of the best. Anyone who likes Pete should try out Fast Eddie on the 2600. It's very different, but it really reminds me of Pete for some reason.
  14. Okay, it's hard to beat rescuing the aliens at the end of Super Metroid, @nosweargamer. For this, I was trying to think of easter eggs I do every time when I play a game and this is the one. Also, there are so many hidden in the backgrounds, etc. in the Luigi's Mansion series. Especially in the first one. My sister and I explored every inch of that place when we were little. Of course, all of Link's Awakening is basically an easter egg. Wart, Kirby, Goombas, Bowser, Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and even more all make an appearance. What a fantastic game that is!
  15. To accompany the horrible music thread, here's the great music thread! Post your favorite songs here and share them with everyone to enjoy. I'll start with my favorite song of all time, "Real Love" from the Beatles Anthology II.
  16. I found a video online of another unlucky soul's experience. I think my friend said this was from Ebay, but I could be wrong. By the way, said "friend" is the same guy who you gave the DS Lite. Thanks for empowering this jerk.
  17. This song, THIS SONG, might be my least favorite. I can't STAND this song at all. It's the Gangster Alley of songs.
  18. @nosweargamer why did I even click on that when I was almost 100% sure I knew what it was going to be? Joke's on you though-- you can't be Rick Rolled if you are already listening to the song! Funny story about that. Yesterday my friend gave me a copy of Pokemon Emerald for the GBA. When I turned it on, it was just a GBA video version of Never Gonna Give You Up in disguise. I couldn't be mad because of how clever that was.
  19. I'm all about sharing everyone's favorite songs, so maybe I'll star a "great music" thread in the future. For now, post those songs that just get under your skin in the worst way here! I'll start with Disco Duck. I actually used to like this song when I was little. Now I don't like it at all.
  20. Hey guys, look! My dad has been reunited with his childhood system, the Odyssey 2! Only other person I know who grew up with one is @nosweargamer. This thing rocks! I love it so much!
My dad is looking for a few games in particular. If anyone has duplicates for the system, please DM me.

@nosweargamer anything he had as a kid, like Armored Encounter/Sub Chase, War of Nerves, Matchmaker/Logix/Buzzword, Volleyball, Pocket Billiards, and Computer Golf. That’s all I can remember now. He also wants Alpine Skiing, which he said he always wanted as a kid but never got.

As for me, I’m pretty happy with what I have right now for the time being. Eventually I’d like to get Alien Invaders Plus, KC’s Krazy Chase, and ESPECIALLY Electronic Table Soccer. But for right now, I’m pretty pleased with what we all have.

What an awesome system this is!

I'll check my duplicates in the next day or two and get back to you.

@nosweargamer seems like the type of collector to have duplicates of Air Raid.

In all seriousness, thanks for looking.

  21. No, it’s not a game in the Mr Do series, but it’s a lot like Mr Do’s Castle with a monkey!
