While I halted mentioning celebrity passings some time ago I would be remiss to NOT mention the passing of this legend! Carl Weathers, Rocky and Predator actor, dies aged 76. Stallone will take this HARD. So long ACTION JACKSON!

I really liked him in the Mandalorian, but now he’s no longer with us. RIP

And so it begins... the collection purge. Before I take the games to Pink Gorilla, I offered up my PS1, PS2, PS4, and Dreamcast games to a gamer couple in the local gaming group. This is what I've pulled out for them. I ended selling a couple of games (like Metal Gear Solid and Parasite Eve II) that I was intending to keep, but I am happy that they are going to people I know who will love them as much as I did.

I dropped off the games this afternoon, and received a little belated Christmas gift from the ladies who bought the games.
I have been thinking about buying an Evercade EXP, and today, I was gifted a dust cover for the handheld. I might really need to buy the handheld for my lonely dust cover 😂 I have such a weakness for handheld gaming. The metal Atari sign is cool. She also gave me the AD&D Intellivision cartridge and a 2600 cleaner.

Combination of a couple of things are prompting me to reduce my games collection. My starting point is nearly 5,000 physical games across multiple consoles and handhelds.
First, I started my game collecting knowing that I would have to downsize later. The "later" came a few years earlier than I anticipated 🙂 Like Rick, the collection downsizing is driven by moving to a smaller home later. Now we aren't yet selling the house anytime soon, but I do need to raise some capital to fund college tuition and vacation. I volunteered to my wife that I would reduce my game collection to raise some funds.
Second, during the past year, I learned that what I loved most is all things Atari and the games and systems from the 80s. That realization has helped me to make the decision to reduce the collection of games for systems from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Don't get me wrong. I love all the games for the PlayStations and Xboxes, but in order to raise funds, reduce the clutter, and make room for other stuff in the house, it was best that I reduce my collection. I'm starting with the PlayStation games because they are the most valuable part of my collection. In the coming months, I will need to figure out what to do with the Xbox games.
The flip side is that I will focus my collection on Atari consoles and computers and a little bit on other systems from the 80s, most notably the Amiga which I bought from Rick last year. With shelf space freed up, I can better display my Vectrex, 5200, 7800, and Jaguar games.

December has been a crazy month--so much going on both professionally and personally, and it's just been a blur. I've been doing the bare minimum when it comes to social media (which means mostly checking Facebook with very limited time in the I/O).
As far as the hobby is concerned, it's also been a busy month.
- Traded away a bottle of wine for an Odyssey 2 in the box with a bunch of games. This is the same person that I traded my heavy sixer with for the Lego 2600 set.
- Bought a Vectrex light pen.
- Bought couple of short controller extensions cords to use with the Vectrex.
- Bought A8PicoCart multicart for the Atari 8bit. I don't need it as I have other means to store and load games, but bought it on a whim.
- Bought games for the Atari 8bit, 5200, and 2600.
- Got an empty Atari 1040ST box for free from a member of the local gaming group.
I'm pretty sure I'm missing some other stuff, but as far as adding to the collection goes, it's been fruitful.
I hope 2024 will be slower going, and I can finally finish cleaning up and reorganizing my hobby spaces in the house. That's been put on hold the past two years because of my health issues (which should be a thing of the past now).
For 2024 and beyond, I am making a big shift. Instead of dabbling in most things, I intend to focus retro gaming heavily to all things Atari with a smattering of modern gaming on the Switch and Steam Deck. This year has taught me that my heart belongs to Atari and other platforms from the 80s and early 90s.
I will be selling off the PS1, 2, and 4 collection to a local gaming store in the next week or two, so that should help with reclaiming some shelf space. For now, I intend to keep my Xbox collection as well as the PS3 collection. While I will keep all my consoles and a few physical games, I will not be expanding my PlayStation and Xbox physical library.
It's been a very enjoyable six years exploring the popular retro gaming platforms, but as I contemplate life and the need the downsize in 5-7 years, I think the time is right to start that process. Hopefully, narrowing my focus will translate into more game time and lot less shopping.
Happy New Year!

@RickR Because of the size and value of my collection, I spoke to Kelsey from Pink Gorilla, and she told me to simply drop it off. I also asked her questions related to taxes. I spoke to one other store owner in the Seattle gaming group, and he told me that he doesn't have the capital to buy my collection.
Because I haven't sold off any of the more valuable pieces and am not simply offloading junk, I am hoping that I will get 55%-60% of market value. That was the guidance that I got from one of the other local store owners.

I put together a chair. It was needlessly hard. Why couldn't they put it together for me?

PSA: Get a free copy of the original Haunted House (2600) on your Atari VCS!

It still works!
Be aware that the code is cap sensitive. I initially entered all the letters in lower case because I couldn't be bothered to turn on all caps 😂 and it didn't work.

I've been away for a week on vacation with very limited internet access. I've got a lot of catching up to do around here!

Welcome back, Rick! It's been a busy October for me, too. I feel like I'm still trying to catch up 😂

Going through my boxed 7800 games to confirm gaps in the retail library. I have six left but they are the $$$ ones.
Here's also some loose oddball, repros, and homebrew from before they came with boxes. I'll have to get these from Marc eventually.

Why won't this crappy weather STOP? 90 today. I bet it will be 90 on Christmas if this keeps up.

A secret that shouldn't be so secret: If you have a Genesis Everdrive, create an SMS folder and put SMS ROM files in there. The Genesis is fully backwards compatible with the Sega Master System ROMs and can run them no problem.

👼🕹️ Has anybody here ever introduced a modern toddler to Atari 2600?
-
I wasn't playing 2600 games when my kids were little. They actually grew up watching me play Halo on the PC. I got both my sons Nintendo DS as their first console when all their friends had one.
By the time I got back into Atari games, my kids were teens and very turned off by the blocky graphics and limited sound. Anything they deemed old was not cool in their eyes. They even asked me why I watch old movies when they saw me watching Indiana Jones or Star Wars.

🤔 What was the first video game you fell in love with as a child?
-
Great question… it’s difficult to answer but my first video game loves are all coin-ops: Star Castle, Defender, Robotron. TBH, the 2600 games I played as a kid didn’t grab me as much as the coin-op games.

Loved your blog entry, Lance. I look forward to future entries as I love learning about the industry and behind the scenes especially during the 80s.

Life is good! I’m still in the hospital for rehab, but I’m receiving care and support from friends, church, and family. I have a great job and awesome co-workers and managers. Today is an off day, so no therapy sessions (my quads were beat up bad yesterday from the intensive sessions).
I’m just feeling happy and giddy chilling, watching videos, surfing the forums… what more could I ask for? 🙂
My wife has been visiting daily, and yesterday, she chided(?) me. Here’s a photo of me taken two days before I had my ER visit that led to surgery. I was still under lots of pain. I had to ask my son to drive me around town that day. We went to church to attend the youth group fundraiser for lunch and then headed to a retro computing society meeting in hopes of meeting Joe Decuir and then followed that up with a visit to this nice man to get the 5200 controllers for free.
How can you smile so big under all that pain is basically what she asked me 😂 She answered her own question saying to the effect that when you love something that much, it can’t be suppressed. Yeah, I’ve been fascinated with video games ever since I first laid my eyes on it as a kid back in the early 80s.
I hope everyone is doing as well as I am minus the hospital stuff.
-
Merci, mon ami. I like your diagnosis but much better than Cauda Equina (Syndrome) which was my ER diagnosis 😂
Yes, I do have the joy, and I know where it is coming from. I was telling my wife yesterday that the joy and peace and strength that Scripture and songs promised are no longer a future state but my present state. It’s a very different peace I feel now compared to two years ago while going through heart surgery recovery. Back then, I was struggling to get a hold of it, but now, it’s already in hand and infusing me and I feel like I did nothing. You let go of something to make room for something else or something like that 🙂

Edladdin's Super Twin 78 Joystick may not be new, but Funkmaster V decides to try it out on a brand new 7800 Homebrew that has had some minor control issues- Attack of the Petscii Robots. See how this twin stick controller also does with Robotron: 2084, T:ME Salvo, Commando, Basketbrawl, and Sirius! #twinstick #atari #atari7800

Edladdin’s Super Twin 78 has been on my wishlist for a while as I’m a big fan of twin stick shooters in general and Robotron is a top 2 or 3 game for me. In the mean time, I have a game pad made by Retro Game Boyz that sports two thumb sticks—not the same as using a dual joystick but better than most alternatives.
