  1. It's not an Evercade item per se, but it is part of my Evercade setup 😂 I decided last week as I thought about where to use the VS-R that I wanted to use my workstation for playing in addition to working. I have a very nice 27" Dell monitor that I use with the company MacBook Pro via DisplayPort.

The monitor also supports HDMI, so I got an HDMI switch along with an HDMI audio extractor to feed audio to my external powered desktop speakers. I tested the setup with my EXP and the mini HDMI output on it. Everything looked great. The sound was great, too, except that it was extremely loud, and I had no way to control the volume.

And that's where this little volume attenuator comes in. It sits between the speakers and the HDMI audio extractor. It had good reviews and is very small. The knob has a bit of weight to it, and it turns very smoothly. I thought about getting something a little fancier in a metal case, but those are much more expensive, and most importantly, much bigger. I don't have much desktop real estate. This thing is about the size of a box of matches, maybe a little smaller.

I switched my MacBook Pro to HDMI output to keep things simpler. I then found out that when the MacBook Pro is connected via HDMI, the volume control on the keyboard does not work, so this little volume pot works there as well.

Now I'm ready to play games via HDMI at my workstation!

  2. I decided to tweak my workstation so I could use the monitor as a display for gaming devices. My HDMI switch and HDMI audio splitter (to route sound to powered desktop monitors) came today, and the first to tap into the new setup is the EXP. I'm still planning to order the VS-R, but it's neat to see the handheld connected to an external display.

    Excuse the mess 😂

EDIT: hmm... I can't control the audio volume of the HDMI signal since the sound is going to active speakers with no volume control. I guess I'll need to add a volume control in the signal chain.

  3. Blaze just announced (via email) that the Tomb Raider Collection is the pack-in for the new R series hardware. Sweet! I was planning to buy the cartridge separately, but now that it's a pack-in, this saves me some money. I am definitely going to pre-order the VS-R.

What negative responses do people have for these?  Just grousing because they recently bought a new console?

I guess looking for a more premium update? 🤷‍♂️

I think the refresh and lower price make perfect business sense to attract new users and offer more potential value to the existing user base contemplating a hardware refresh or upgrade.

I'm going to suggest a switch over to "Strange New Worlds" for you, as it REALLY good.  You'll get a flavor of that in Season 2 Discovery.  So maybe watch season 2 and then cut over.

I’ve been watching SNW. I absolutely love it. I even tried to style my hair a la Captain Pike but couldn’t get the volume. I may need a better hair dryer or hire a stylist 😂

  6. That's awesome! Thanks for sharing the news, Rick. It's incredible that the Chicago TI user group has been meeting regularly, and true to old school, in a library room, and there's videos of the meetings 👏 👏 Trivia about Scott Adams, Infocom ❤️

I miss those user group days. I told my wife recently that I want to fly to Texas to attend a T.A.C.O. Atari user group meeting.

  7. I finished season 1 last week and will start season 2 soon. Thanks for recommending Discovery to me. I’ve been loving it. The tone and style and most everything is definitely a departure from TOS and TNG, and I am good with that. The characters have depth, and I appreciate that. Looking forward to season 2 and beyond.

And the fact that the songs do not change over to the next track automatically.

That's a big bummer for me. I also just want to leave it on to play on it own. I've been thinking of getting this out of curiosity and novelty of concept. I know music album cartridges are out there but I never tried one.

Thanks for the sharing the sound clip.
