  1. 43,300 -- I had heard of the name before but never seen nor played Major Havoc. I ❤️ vector graphics. The gameplay of this game is a bit more complicated than Elevator Action. The controls are simple enough but you have multiple distinct game mechanics from shooter to platforming in a Berzerk-like maze, and then there's the mini Breakout game. It truly is The Adventures of Major Havoc.
  2. Elevator Action Arcade Difficulty: Bonus Life at 10,000 Points High Score: 53,850 November 12, 2020
  3. Out of curiosity, I checked my collection of 200 2600 games. Out of three that are rated at 5 (Frankenstein's Monster, Rampage, Private Eye all CIB) and one that rates a 6 (Track & Field loose cartridge).
  4. I found out about a couple of very fun and rare games recently through the high score challenge on the AA Facebook group: Mines of Minos and Room of Doom. I never heard of these games until I played them a month or two ago. I looked into buying them and they commanded high prices so I figured they must be rare.
  5. Hello @Crash_Corrigan! That’s quite the list. I will have to look up what’s rare in my collection. I never bought any 2600 game with rarity in mind. This is how I collected my 200+ in box games: Pac-Man because of nostalgia Activision games because their games wowed me as a kid (I’m missing HERO and Cosmic Commuter) Atari releases for the amazing box art Data Age games because I thought the boxes looked cool Imagic games because the boxes looked cool
  6. I've heard good things about Alan Wake which is a console exclusive (also available on PC). Lots of good games. I guess it depends on what types of games you like. I still play Halo Reach for its firefight mode (waves of enemies) after all these years.
  7. Definitely try out the Uncharted series. It was the reason why I bought the PS3. They felt more like interactive movies to me and were a lot of fun (I played normal difficulty, I think). I was looking to play games with great stories, and my friend hounded me to get the PS3 to play Uncharted. I also enjoyed the Resistance series. It's a first person shooter and a console exclusive. There are many well regarded console exclusives and some have been mentioned already (e.g., Last of Us). God of War also comes to mind.
  8. I haven’t modded anything since the PSP, I think. I do have the Wii and WiiU still hooked up in the family room, but they get no use since the kids have moved on to more modern stuff. I’ll play them... someday.
  9. Great job @HDN for modding your WiiU and getting on the scoreboard. I’m super happy that the high score challenge afforded me the opportunity to play one of my favorite arcade games from childhood (and also dust off my Raspberry Pi). I don’t think I ever made it out of level 1 back then. I’m glad to see that age hasn’t deteriorated what little skill I had for this game but actually improved it 💪 and it didn't cost me any quarters this time
  10. Nice! Glad you like them @MaliciousCarp. Hope you got the fake Activision letter as well for the You Suck patch. It's pretty hilarious. I received Tom's new patches and the Bridge patch earlier this week.
  11. Woot! I only saw the schedule now. I'll try to log in later today. 🍀 🍀 Stormy One
  12. 53,850 -- the new 8Bitdo gamepad is really paying off One tip... at the basement level where the exit is, if you happen to find yourself far away from a red door, don't try to traverse your way to it. Go for the exit elevator and travel all the way down. If you get to the exit and missed a red door, the game will automatically transport you directly to the red door. It's safer and easier and faster than trying to make your way across the screen.
  13. I didn't realize that this challenge ends at 11:59 pm PST November 14, 2020 For some reason, I thought it ran the entire month of November.
  14. Hello, Wade! A fellow five-one'er here! The high score challenge spans a month so come join the fun. We're playing Elevator Action this month.
  15. @RickR I previously used the Xbox 360 wired controller. It detected it automatically and I didn't have to do anything. A few days ago, I got the 8Bitdo SN30 Pro wired controller, and RetroPie also automatically detected it and set it up without any work on my end. This gamepad is great.
  16. Yes more MAME, please! For those running linux boxes, you may want to consider setting up a retropie build. I have it running on my Raspberry Pi 3+ that I bought back in 2018. It's a lazy man's emulation station. I downloaded a build that came with a bunch of games and everything was preconfigured and worked without much tinkering on my part. Here's the housing for my Pi 3+. The photo is from the etsy seller that I bought it from.
  17. I got laid off today, the first time in my career. When AT&T merged a bunch of companies (HBO, Turner, etc.) under the former Time Warner corp umbrella into a single entity WarnerMedia, we knew the new company would look to consolidate. It was a bit of a surprise given where I was situated organizationally, but a bunch of us were given pink slips. Because I got rolled up in a broad organizational move, it’s easy not to take this personally, so I’m glad for that. I had seen some friends struggle emotionally before.

My wife recently got a new job, and she’s still within the new employee benefits enrollment window, so at least I don’t have to worry about getting a new job quickly for health insurance reasons. For the first time, I won’t be the primary coverage member 🙂 Lots of new firsts.

Before folks feel too sorry for me, I am in a good position. First, I am grateful for an extremely stable career experience so far. I’ve experienced my share of company re-org and changes and always landed into a great place. The fact that this is my first involuntary job change is quite the feat in a 23 year career. Second, I’m also grateful that we will be given a nice severance package to ease the transition into the next gig. Third, I’m in an industry that is very robust and still hiring. And lastly and most importantly, God is good, and He is the Shepherd of my life. In Him, I find peace and rest.

I share this news here because I like the I/O community and wanted to open up more on a personal level to foster better relationships. Also, I’ll have more time to spend on the monthly challenge, so you have been warned 🕹🕹🤣🤣

@RickR I sent in my doctor's note and HR approved it a few weeks ago. The legal term is "accommodate." I just got reimbursed yesterday. It's an Uplift desk. Yep, bonus severance!

Yes, I got a pellet smoker by Traeger. My Weber charcoal grill was on its last legs, and I was planning to replace it next year. Recently, my wife and I were at Costco and Traeger reps were there with a couple of additional models that Costco normally doesn't carry. She gave the thumbs up, so we walked out with one ($500), and multiple people in the store commented to me that I would not regret the purchase. I'm planning to cook this year's turkey with it.

I really, really, really like mine (it's not a Traeger brand, but same design).  It's so easy to use (just plug it in).  No more messing with lighting.  And it's just about impossible to burn any food.  Once you get it set up, let me know what you think.  Or if you need any help or have questions.

Chicken, especially, comes out perfect every time.  I always had trouble on our gas grill.  Chicken would come out dry.  But not on the pellet grill.

$500 is a great deal on that brand!

Thanks, Rick. I do want to try it out a couple of times before doing the turkey. I'll try to remember to take some photos and share 🥩🍗

  18. I remember watching Titanic with my wife in the theater -- there were several girls a few rows in front of us. A couple of them were just flat out bawling towards the end of the movie. I was a bit surprised that the movie had such a response, but then again, I suppose that was the DiCaprio effect. @RickR I was thinking of this thread when I saw that on FB 😄
  19. 44,900 -- the action gets intense pretty quick after level 3! It doesn't take long to find yourself surrounded. I got the SN30 Pro gamepad by 8Bitdo the other day, and while I'm not a fan of gamepads, this one is very good. The d-pad is certainly very responsive and comfortable.
  20. You're my newfound hero, @Willie! I ❤️ Atari 8-bit, my first home computer. However, outside of some CIB Atari 8-bit games (mostly games by EA and Synapse), I'm not going down the rabbit hole of collecting A8 hardware and software -- just don't have the space. I do have the 800 in box and two 800XL along with the SDrive and Ultimate cart.
  21. Welcome to the I/O @zgillet! Which industry do you work for or what type of programming do you do? I'm also in the tech sector, working as a program manager for SRE (kubernetes infra) teams. I remember playing Doom on my 386/33 when it first came out. It was groundbreaking and amazing. The community that it developed was unprecedented and the FAQ it spawned was quite the tome.
  22. Interesting! I thought it was Street Fighter that popularized the the joystick/d-pad on the left. I had a couple of PC gamepads back in the day (ones by Gravis and Microsoft), and I think both had the d-pad on the left. I've gotten used to using the joystick with my left hand although I grew up using my right hand (original Atari controller, Wico joysticks). I find I can go with either hand and it feels ok. All this discussion points to the fact that controllers are a very personal thing and greatly influenced by what we used when we first started playing video games.
  23. 🤣 Is that for real??? Hahaha I'm assuming you're being serious, Harry. During the height of video tape watching in the Korean community (80s-90s), people would rent literally dozens of VHS tapes at a time to watch their favorite shows from Korea on a weekly basis. These tape rewinders were meant to 1) save wear and tear on the player and 2) let the player be used to watch videos while the tapes were rewound. And with dozens of tapes to rewind, you could do two at a time.
