  1. Lookie! A  snazzy Donkey Kong XM/ PK Review at Atari 7800 Forever's Youtube page!
What it first was, why it was, why it wasn't, and what it is now. #atari #donkeykong #DK

Enjoyed the review! 🙂 XM/PK is really a great conversion. Darryl1970 noticed one or two things not arcade accurate, but I'd never have known if he hadn't told me. Tep did a phenomenal job with the graphics and POKEY sound. 😄

I actually forgot I had a copy, until I was poking around my 7800 stuff after your review. 😛

That's crazy that u forgot you had one. But sadly, Im getting to the point where Im getting damn forgetful about all the crap I own now.

What was not quite arcade accurate if you remember?

    3. Jinroh

      Jinroh

I honestly can't remember. I'll have to ask Darryl and see what he said. It was a pretty obscure detail though, I'm pretty sure.

  2. Big n funky Fridays tonight! 7:30 PM Eastern-

The 7800 Pro Gamer and Funkmaster V look into their crystal funk bawls to guess, forecast and wish for what is in store for Atari's 2024. And if it ryhmes, its true. We talk about Delta Space Arena, Plutos, Madness Beverage, Harpy's Curse and the big Food Fight Culinary Combat tournament we are having in 2 weeks.  #atari #atarivcs #atarivcs

  3. I've heard a lot of jabrones, tricks, pimps, skeezers, furries, bad guys, gnomes and dorks say that Rikki & Vikki was one of the most impressive games ever made for the Atari 7800.

As a guy that has reviewed 100+ games for the 7800, I'm not easily impressed. Let's see what the Funk thought on his weekend excursion to Misery Land.

      Excellent write-up of the game @Funkmaster V

It's a shame that the sell through of the first 550 was so slow. I would love to see more from titles from PenguiNet on the 7800. Their game Zaku for Lynx is also top notch!

    2. Funkmaster V

      Funkmaster V

I dont know how good a run of 7800 games 550 sales really is. Is that high or low? That's about $33,000... but still probably not worth it after labor, parts and taxes.

I hate it that no one can pick up a copy and the music is so huge and on a funky chip that emulation is not possible. You can buy it on steam, however, at a fraction of the cost.

Thanks for the compliment. Whoever these guys are- they make great games. I hope they come back.

  5. I've been horsing around and mostly enjoying Micro Center's Atari Ultimate Dual Fight Stick with Trac Ball for a year and a half, and have had an Atari Spinner installed for a year (it was very easy to do). After all that time, I have discovered (for myself at least) which 10 games utilize the machine the best with the emulators I currently have. This is my top ten list- They are not the best games of all time, but the best on this particular hardware... that I have discovered. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UwkSg8Rkqc

Yup. I also love that graphic that I found that put the Popeye people on the cab instead of the Nintendo characters in the DK poses. Bluto looks like DK quite a bit, too.

  7. In recent years, I've seen that there has been some confusion and real life tears in regards to Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest. It all stems from Bobby D astutely inventing a "C Button" for the Pro System. Here's how to fix the confusion with the game in the modern age where people use emulation more than consoles.

  8. Jon Stoll II has decided to step away from doing the Atari Network Podcast, and I’m not continuing it without him, so that will essentially be the end of that. I will still update the Atari 7800 Forever website and YouTube Channel, and he will continue with the Atari Network YouTube channel. We had a fun run and I hate that it came to an end. This review is spot-on. Looks like a fun time, but hard to compete with Splatoon, etc. Atari to me is about 2-D gaming and I would love a "Food Fight: RECHARGED" if they released one. The characters and gameplay seem cute, and they seem invested in the World of Atari. Worst aspect in my opinion is Atari's continuing down the path of turning Bentley Bear into a nasty grump with a chip on his shoulder - seems totally out of character and doesn't work at all for a mascot :crystal_castles: Where's "Crystal Castles: RECHARGED"? Enjoyed your review @Funkmaster V, hope you have a wonderful Christmas and an awesome New Year.

  12. Edladdin's Super Twin 78 Joystick may not be new, but Funkmaster V decides to try it out on a brand new 7800 Homebrew that has had some minor control issues- Attack of the Petscii Robots. Edladdin’s Super Twin 78 has been on my wishlist for a while as I’m a big fan of twin stick shooters in general and Robotron is a top 2 or 3 game for me. In the mean time, I have a game pad made by Retro Game Boyz that sports two thumb sticks—not the same as using a dual joystick but better than most alternatives.

I was excited to see a review of Wizard's Dungeon on the site. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the 7800 and NES era of games mostly due to the color palette used in many games of that era--very earthy and muted. However, I really want to try homebrews for the 7800. I'm glad I read the review. It was easy reading and provided the necessary information for me to make a decision. I will pick it up at PRGE.

  14. We had a great Atari Age Day, playing all 4 of the funktastic 7800 games that was shipped on Saturday to the Mothership. We squeezed out a Knight Guy review and updated Dragon's Descent after playing it on cart for the first time. 17. Back in the double aughts, the 7800 community was happy to become foster parents to the wayfaring, troubled 2600 cart "Save Mary". This inspired many artist renditions, scribblings, and etchings of labels, some of which exist on the internet still to this day. Tonight, I compiled the surviving images in one article and I poke fun at most of them:

FYI, the song described in Exhibit #6 of the Save Mary Box Art Gallery, "Money for Nothing," was by Dire Straits. I remember the video because it was the first fully-CG music video ever made. It was tops in the MTV Video Music Awards of that year, and I think it was 1985. I loved that song. Thanks for letting me share. :O)

  18. Marc Oberhäuser has a fun name to say and a really cool store on Etsy called AtariGameBoxes. It features the game boxes that he conjures up for homebrews, reproductions, limited releases and prototypes. He has dozens of Atari 7800 game boxes available at around $16-17 a pop (and other classic systems too). Funkmaster V ordered a handful and looks at them for the first time with you. #atarigameboxes #atari7800 #atari Check out the biggest Atari 7800 website on the planet: www.Atari7800Forever.com

  19. Ive been making our second horror/comedy movie this last month in the Smoky Mountain Chronicles series, and this weekend I have off, so I wanted to do a bunch of Atari 7800 articles that I have back logged for www.Atari7800Forever.com before I get busy for the next month while we finish it.

I already posted about this featurette about Muddyfunsters games, but its worth a second mention. Plus there's a graphic from one of his games with my name on it, so I wanted to brag:

I reviewed Space Duel after playing the arcade version and the 7800 version for an hour on break this week

I look into getting into the backstory about that mysterious Atari Championship title belt I was gifted last month. I was given a wrestling belt years ago, and it ended up being very valuable. Can lightning strike twice?

Muddyfunster's work on Tyre Trax looked phenomenal and his 7800 efforts look equally impressive. I'm especially excited by the title screen of Danger Zone--it recalls everything that was cool about Top Gun.

Thanks for keeping 7800 journalism alive, Funk!

  20. Klax is one weird "stuff is falling" puzzle game with one of the strangest (lamest) tag lines in history: It's is the nineties, and there is time for KLAX."

But this cerebral puzzle game was a completed, unreleased prototype that is pretty darn faithful to the arcade machine its based on. Read about all this jive in the review located:

  21. To the uninitiated, Baby Pac Man sounds like another derivative Maze Game that most people wouldn't want or need. But once you crack it open, you'll find a compelling hybrid maze/ pinball game where one has to master both to progress far. On a system that is king for maze games, this one may be the ultimate ruler of them all. Click the link for the review

  22. Hobby programmers and their after market creations have vastly improved the Platform scene in the Atari 7800 universe in recent years. Now that there's a good sample size, you may ask, what are the top 10 levels of the 7800's platform games? Even if you didn't ask... 25. Today we review ole Bobby D's take on Cinematronics ancient vector game "RIP OFF"

    WHAT IS HAPPENING OVA HERE?
Your wife makes a friggin sweet Nacho Del Grande platter. Her Nachos are so tasty in fact, that you pridefully lay them out for your neighbors to see. Foolish boy. You live in a crappy part of town, but who knew your neighbors were pirates who have a sh*t ton of tanks at their disposal? Text your cooky best friend who lives next door, tell him to grab his tank... because those bastards are coming for your Super Bowl snacks and they hate hatred in their eyes and growling in their guts.
