  1. Short project of the day -- a homemade composite cable.  I cut the wire off a TI-99/4A RF box (which was broken) and cut a composite cableset in half and BOOM -- a composite cable that will work for TI-99/4A, Atari XL/XE, or Commodore VIC-20/64.

There was some cursing involved.  Twisting 4 ground wires together and getting a good solder on them is TOUGH man.

A screen photo of the cord in action is the last pic.  It looks and sounds really good.

  2. Items that I'll be listing on ebay soon. I'll mention them here in case anyone is interested and would like to buy now (and save me the effort and fees of ebay). Pictures available if interested.

    • Atari 1200XL - needs keyboard refurb. About 1/3 of the keys do not work. Another project I'll never have time for. Hoping to get $175 + shipping. Comes with power adapter.
    • Atari 1027 printer - No idea if it works...probably not as the old rubber heads on these disintegrate over time. Free for the cost of shipping.
    • Atari XEGS - works. No keyboard. There is a hole cut in the cover. I don't know what this might be worth. $80? Make an offer.

I did NOT buy a mini. I just have too many computers and need to downsize.

Thanks for sharing here @RickR! If these end up on ebay feel free to share your auctions in our ebay listings forum :nintendo_mario_1up:

  3. Ron Howard is 70 today!  What is your favorite Ron Howard role?  Opie, Steve from American Grafitti, Richie Cunningham, or any multitude of other parts?

It's hard not to say Opie, that's such an iconic role. Happy Days is nearly as iconic, as is American Graffiti. I've really enjoyed Ron Howard as a film maker. My "favorite" role honestly has to be as the narrator on Arrested Development as the show would not be what it was without it.

      RickR

Oooh, Arrested Development narrator is a great one that I didn't think of!  Nice.

My favorite Ron Howard role is probably Richard Cunningham from "Happy Days." Opie Taylor is a close second. I have never seen all of "American Graffiti," so I have no opinion about that one.

  8. Here's a pretty wild USPS Priority Mail shipment tracking.  It is supposed to go from Portland to Cleveland.  Looks like it is taking the scenic route.

That's utterly insane. I haven't had the best luck with mail getting to Portland promptly. I've never tried mailing out of Portland though 🙃

This is a really weird one for sure.  I've sent out a ton of packages over the years, and this is the only time this has happened.

  9. Playing some Berserk Enhanced on this Atari Day!

      That works!

We may also make it multi-platform with the 5200 version, which is brutally hard.

    3. Justin

      Justin

@RickR I agree, I was thinking along similar lines. Definitely would open it up to Berzerk and Berzerk Enhanced so everyone can play. 5200 is super hard. How does scoring on 5200 compare with 2600?

    4. RickR

      RickR

I'd have to examine it further, but I think the scoring is very similar.

And Berzerk Enhanced is NOT the same game.  When I was playing last night, the robots can shoot diagonal.  I don't think they do on original 2600 Berzerk.  It makes the game harder.

  10. A quick shot of my Mattel Electronics handheld collection.

  11. I've been away for a week on vacation with very limited internet access.  I've got a lot of catching up to do around here!

@RickR "Cutting that tie?"  How would I ever make it through the day without calling into Atari.io at least once a day?

      RickR

I tells ya, life can really slow down if you give up the internet for a week.  I read books, played gameboy, walked a lot, swam, and had very much fun.

It is really difficult, but fun.

And the final "death" animation is pretty incredible.

  14. Club VCS pins arrived today!  Thank you @Sabertooth  These are so cool. If you haven't joined Club VCS yet, what the heck are you waiting for?

  17. I hope everyone had a nice weekend.  Now let's all get through Monday together in spirit.  We got this!

  18. Who knew?

You can press "right" on the joystick to restart the game in 2600 Dragster.  🤯

All these years, I've been reaching for that reset switch!

  19. I've got a Take-n-Bake pizza in the fridge already for dinner tonight.  And not to offend anyone, but it has pineapple on it 🙂  Looking forward to eating dinner in front of the TV tonight, which we do only once in a while.

  20. A secret that shouldn't be so secret:  If you  have a Genesis Everdrive, create an SMS folder and put SMS ROM files in there.  The Genesis is fully backwards compatible with the Sega Master System ROMs and can run them no problem.

    1. Justin

      Justin

WOW I had no idea! THANK YOU @RickR! The Master System and Game Gear are very similar - can the Genesis Everdrive run Game Gear games also? Can you run Game Gear games on a Master System Everdrive?

      socrates63

Wow, thanks, Rick! I had been thinking of picking up a SMS console, but I will put away that idea. And it sounds like I don’t even need a Powerbase—nice!

I do not know about the Game Gear games, but it is worth trying.

  21. I am still trying to finish NES "Legend of Zelda", and I've made it to this second dungeon boss.   That's all I can do for today though.

3 dungeons completed and I have the raft now.  I do not remember how many dungeons there are.  9?  I was hoping to get further along this holiday weekend, but I got busy with other things...

Oh good!  Thanks for that info.

I'm trying to do this the old fashioned way...with a map and no hints.  I remember a lot of stuff from back in the day, but it's been fun finding where everything is.  My only conceit is using an emulator that allows me to save wherever I want so I can stop when something in real life comes up.
