  1. Datasoft "Zorro" on 8-bit.  An overlooked classic.

Nice. I never played this one.

I haven't either.  But I have quickly learned that Datasoft must have been one of the better third party developers.  Truth be told it is probably because of them some of the 5200 games were even made.

I've been playing more Zorro, and it is an interesting game.  It kind of reminds me of "Bruce Lee" in visual style, but it's definitely not as good.  It's more of a puzzle solving game, which is fine.  But there are issues:

      • The music repeats over and over and over.  It will get on your nerves.
      • Figuring out what to do is not very obvious.  I had to refer to on-line guides.  How the heck could any casual gamer back then figure any of this out?
      • Lots and lots of backtracking.  Take this object over there, but you also need this other object, and since you can only carry one at a time....go back and get it.

  2. I'm fiddling with Dolphin emulator (for Gamecube) on PC.  It works pretty well!

Wow!  I need to go where you went.  I can't see with or without my glasses lol

I know, right?  It is pretty amazing.  I'm told they remove the cateract and replace your lens with a "permanent contact".

I still wear glasses too.  But I don't have cateracts.  Yet.  My eyesight isn't terrible.  I can see without glasses.  But I have one eye near, one far-sighted.  They always joke "you'd make an excellent fighter pilot".  One eye on gauges, one out the canopy.

I try to look at things close up and I have to remove my glasses. To look at things far away I have to put them back on.

  4. Atari50 is on sale on Steam right now.  This is a MUST buy for all Atari fans.

    GAME ON PEOPLE!

  6. The AtariAge "Last Chance" sale ends THIS SUNDAY 7/23/23.  I ordered a couple of 2600 games that were on my list.  Grab em before they are gone!

  7. Let's revive the Atari.io "Club Evercade".  Please join the club whether you have an Evercade or not and help spread the word.  It's a great system for retro gamers!  I'll be posting thoughts, reviews, and new release info, and hoping like crazy that others will join in with their stories and expertise.

I like this setup! This reminds me a lot of the room I had set up when I first launched this website (pre-forums). I had a rack just like that with 2600 and 7800 components that had been parted out into parts bins. I'm glad to see you get to enjoy this hobby to the extent of having a room for it 🙂

Thank you.  I have to give it up when we have guests or the kids come back home to stay for a visit.  But otherwise, I've had some fun in this room.

  10. Atari50 is on sale now on Steam.  Highly recommended.

I pre-ordered the physical release for the Nintendo Switch when it came out. I haven't had a chance to play it. What have you played on it?

    2. RickR

      RickR

Mostly, it's fun to read and watch all the history bits.

The coin op games are a ton of fun.  There's some obscure stuff on there.  But the real prize is Tempest with the VCS spinner.  It's a lot of fun to play that way.

  11. RickR just got outstanding medical lab results.  Lowest cholesterol number in over 20 years for example.

I'm not sure the reason beyond luck, but I have been exercising more (biking, lifting) and eating better (more fruits/veg, less sugar, caffeine) and less.  But I'm very grateful and hopeful things stay this good.

  12. Happy Atari Day!  Why not celebrate by buying a VCS console/bundle or other merch from Atari this weekend.  Great sale going on now.

  13. The real deal!  At the Petersen auto museum in Los Angeles.  The placard say this car was in all three movies, and who doesn't trust placards?

  16. Computer upgrade time!

My trusty main desktop computer is dying.  I believe it's the motherboard that failed.  The built-in network adapter failed about a year ago.  And now the CPU is overheating.  No amount of reseating the heatsink or re-applying thermal compound helps.  My guess is the capacitors are dying, causing too-high voltage.

I searched high and low for a pre-built computer that wasn't too terribly expensive, but failed.  It isn't easy to find a desktop that has an optical drive (or space for one) AND the ability to add in a big video card (including power connectors).  Most of what I found was over $1000.

Instead, I consulted one of my children, who helped me pick these parts.  Total spent is $200.  I'll re-use a lot of my existing setup.  Including the DDR4 memory, power supply, case, SSD, and Blu-ray drive.

Hopefully, I can get my Windows license to transfer.

    Wish me luck!

<knock on wood>...so far, it works GREAT.  I didn't even have to re-install windows.  It just booted right up, and here I am.

Run run run.  Fall down.  Try to get out of the hole...fall down.  Repeat.

Although if one was to be made maybe they would avoid the issues that the original had.  It really wasn't a bad effort considering the time given.

  18. Very special thanks to @Sabertooth for the ClubVCS Recharged Squad Challenge Giveaway prize, which arrived today.  The modern controller is totally awesome, but the classy letter and pins (my favorite is the Donut Dodo) take it over the top!

I hope everyone takes the opportunity to join in.  And invite your friends.  LETS DO THIS!

  20. Ugh!  Shouldn't this be over by now?  Summer can't get here fast enough.  It just started sticking, and now the forecast has it snowing all night.  Sigh.

We're at about 6" at 6pm.  Unbelievable.  For most of the day, it snowed but it was too warm to stick.  Then at about 3pm, the temperature dipped and WHAM!

Don't get me wrong, it's really not a big deal.  It's just surprising at this time of year.  We have all we need to stay warm and healthy.

  22. Micro Pinball has arrived!  It took about two weeks, which was expected.

FedEX delivered it to the wrong address (the house next door).  No biggie, but still.  Not cool.  My poor neighbor was embarrassed that I saw her in PJ's.  Oops.

I'm not sure that I'll have time to open and assemble this today, but I will post here when I do.
