  1. Our youngest child was dropped off at college yesterday, so I started re-arranging our video game space for me-me-me! So here we go. Lowest shelf is Atari 2600, second is Intellivision, 3rd is empty (coming soon - Colecovision) and 4th is Atari 600XL. The 2600 will be replaced with a 7800 very soon. This may take a little time, but I'm having a blast setting this up.
  2. Wooo, that console prototype shell looks good! Any idea on what the controllers would have looked like?
  3. Thanks abarilbc. This looks like a great game and I can't wait to give it a try.
  4. My Lynx (and 24 games) is on my "possibly sell" list right now. If anyone here is interested, please PM me. I like the Lynx a lot, but with 2 kids in college at the same time, I could probably use the $ a bit more. On the bright side, it doesn't take up much space, so that may be a good reason to hold on to it.
  5. Do you know someone that installs them? I'd like to get an upgrade, but an too chicken to try doing it myself. Thanks
  6. You guys, I'm so excited. I went ahead and upgraded a recently acquired 600XL to 64k of memory. That makes it mostly equivalent to the 800XL, only in a smaller package. The upgrade was really easy. Only needed to purchase 2 memory chips and then do a very small amount of soldering. I thought I'd post the instructions I gathered from around the web here in one document. I'd be happy to help if anyone else in interested in doing this type of upgrade. Here's the finished product after putting it back together and cleaning it up. And here's the free memory command that shows the same value as a 64k 800XL (don't mind the fuzzy picture) Internal upgrade to bring the 600XL up to 64kB.pdf

  8. Do you accept submissions to scan? I've got a pile of "Portland Atari Club" newsletters from the 80's I could send to you.
  9. As for the dev kit saying "16 bit", I think it was pretty common for early dev systems to be based on older hardware. It would have allowed a developer to get the bones of a game going while they ironed out the real hardware design. The hopeful result would have been some third party games available with the launch of the console.
  10. Wow, how fascinating! Here's the wikipedia page about the Panther: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Panther What's really interesting to me is how games on the Atari 520ST really look and feel like Genesis games to me. I'd imagine this Panther system, if it was really based on the ST, would have been great competition for the Genesis and SNES. Probably too late, though.
  11. Very interesting indeed. A lot of potential for great story telling in this subject matter, that's for sure.
  12. Oooooh, pretty neat. Let us know if you find any others. Thanks
  13. Some interesting junk for me: A Tron Hot-Wheel style holder. I came with one lightcycle. Sega Genesis portable -- not sure that it works yet.
  14. That stuff is great, but mostly I want to say congrats on the new job! Awesome news.
  15. Good. Nice of them to actually sell a product people want to buy.
  16. RIP to Disney imagineer X Atencio. Died at age 98 on Sept 10. Legend.

  17. I can confirm they are identical. I had 'em both and "eeny-meeny-miny-moe'd" which one to put in the box.
  18. I feel like I got body slammed on that one.
  19. Sweet stuff. My goal of getting someone else hooked on 8-bit carts was a success!
  20. Oh that's OK. Don't be sorry. Your video is inspirational. I have a Wii that's been modded, and that is really sweet too. That one is great because the only limitation is the size of the SD card. And transferring files involves just copying to an SD card.
  21. Wha??? I need to look into this for sure. I hadn't hear of it before. Which theater chains are involved? We have Regal and Century here. My kids are both going to be away in college in a couple of weeks, so this would be really great for my wife and I. Get us out of the house and having fun by ourselves. Thank you for posting, I need to check it out.
  22. PS - nice video. Seeing it in action really shows how nice the setup is.
  23. Oh my gosh that is awesome! The screen/box art on the menus make this extra sweet. I think I have everything I need to do this mod myself. I wasn't going to get a larger hard drive initially. I currently have a joystick-port -> USB dongle and a USB memory stick, the save file needed. the game disc they recommend, and an XBOX to try this on. Any tips you can offer? It's been on my list for a while, but hasn't made it to the top yet.
  24. Doom would be great. It would be interesting to compare to the PS1 and N64 versions, or even the 32X.
