The A7800 version is superior in practically every way, to me. I love the game. Plus, it is very entertaining. I always enjoy playing it. :O)

hi everyone, as requested, and i was about to do it, food fight comparison.

7800 version, colorful, smooth, good sounds,

XEGS version, choppy, almost like its in basic, music pretty good, but some sound effects are almost 2600 like.

I have them both, and I'm with Lance...the 7800 is smoother.  Also, the graphics are more detailed.

Do "Food Fight" next!  The 8-bit version is a mess, and the 7800 version is an A+.

    hi everyone

the atari 7800 could really shine sometimes under the right programmer, and if they were given a decent cart board to work with.

the XEGS version is not to bad, looks great, sounds great, but its jerky and not smooth. there are limitations to how many sprites can be displayed at once. colors are good also.

here is the 7800 version, music is still good, notice the smooth scrolling, not jerky, can display many sprites at once with ease. great colors. this has a shameless plug in the video, i cannot help it,

    hi justin,

atari promised they would update all 400/800/xl games up to the 64k XEGS standard. instead they either put stickers on the 400/800/xl game boxes saying will play on the XEGS, usually a lime green sticker, and they put eastern front in a XEGS blue box, but still used the 400/800 cart shell, and put a blue XEGS sticker on the cart.
in the case of donkey kong they put the game in  XEGS cart shell,  and a XEGS blue box, but it was still 16k.
that was a towering achievement for jack. look at the few cents he spent on boxes, labels, and stickers!

meanwhile some more 64k excellence, notice the splash screen on a 8-bit with just 64k.

Also, I am a WWII history buff. You see, my grandfather and great-uncle were at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Makes me proud that I have that history in my family. ^_^

This is an interesting one! Point-for-Point, Barnyard Blaster is a better game compared to Duck Hunt. Barnyard Blaster offers more screens, more scenes, a greater variety of things to shoot at. Duck Hunt just offers Ducks or Discs. Barnyard Blaster offers music, more detailed graphics, more detailed objects to target.
And yet Duck Hunt looks and feels like the better game. It has that Nintendo high-polish shine. It feels like it exists in that Nintendo world. Sadly Atari just couldn't create a cohesive world in quite the same way.
The moment you shot Gramps just to see what would happen has to be the greatest moment in BTB history.

Jack had a good opportunity to beat Nintendo if he cared about GAMES. Atari sure as hell could've come in a solid 2nd at the end of the 8-bit era and be prepped to dominate the 16-bit generation. Stripping sound out of games and not encouraging third party development and not advertising surrendered the market yet again. This is the most pedantic frustrating thing ever.

Pi kit is ordered, as well as the LCD driver. I'll probably order the buttons & joystick too, since they're cheap, but I'll hold off on the control deck, as that's not cheap.
    Wish me luck!!

    hi,

its amazing how many 7800 games were bungled. i suspect jacks cheapness to be the main culprit! it looks like the xe version of mario bros. was a outright done from scratch.

I watched the video, and it's pretty short on details.  It all looks do-able, but I'm going to guess it's going to be $250 to build this.
My advice is very simple -- buy a Pi and get the image he refers to.  Load it up and try it out using a TV and a gamepad of your choice.  If you can get it working there, you can play around a bit and determine if you like it and want to invest in getting the little arcade machine upgraded and working.

Not an entry, but if you really like this game I recommend Meteor Shower for the 7800 by Bob Decrescenzo. Its personally my favorite version of the game and is nicely updated in terms of graphics and sound. Check it out over on AtariAge.

If you hold down the button, it auto fires.  So you're good there on emulation.  I can assure you, the side buttons on the smaller INTV are no better.  That one will HURT.  I'm not sure I want to try it on INTV.

I need to try the Intellivision version.  I remember it being a lot slower to ramp up the difficulty.
Those two scores I posted were the first and second attempts.  My kids scoffed, tried the game themselves, had trouble cracking 1000, and then seemed slightly impressed with my ability.  I'll take that very small victory.

4415.  Took a stab at Astroblast on my modded Sears Video Arcade.
Wow, this is objectively more difficult than Astrosmash on the Inty!  The starting speed feels like 4x on the Intellivision.
