  1. Bought my first ever CIB copy of an NES game.

It's nothing spectacular, not a particularly big name title, but it was reasonably priced and I thought "What the heck?"

Anybody got any suggestions how best to display an NES game box?

I'll share pics when it arrives in the mail.

      Fairly sure it's legit, but it's a lower-tier game.

Not a Black Box title from Nintendo, and not something like a Contra, Final Fantasy, or a Castlevania.

It's Time Lord, from Milton Bradley. Okay game, from what I recall. It's another piece that I had back before the fire that I'm just now replacing, but I happened to see a rather nice CIB example for sale for a pretty reasonable price.

  2. I watched a really eye-opening video on Youtube last night that pretty succinctly exposed the blatant fraud behind the whole graded/sealed video game market.

Needless to say, Super Mario Bros. selling for $1.5 million dollars is all based on a whole lot of fraudulent market speculation, and it's a house of cards being propped up by an auction house and a grading company that were founded by the same people who caused the coin collecting bubble back in the 1980s.

It's all a bubble, and it's going to pop sooner or later.

@Justin I'll link the video here.

It's a bit of a long watch, over 50 minutes, but the video creator went extremely in depth following the money and laid it all out much more succinctly than I'd be able to.

True that, but unfortunately, the speculation bubble has started indirectly affecting the regular retro game market, too, and since this whole speculation scene started two years ago prices across the entire market have surged 33%. And they keep going up. Regular NES games that used to be dirt cheap before the bubble are now going for $50 or more.

  4. Turns out the game I mentioned yesterday is region-locked!

A completely unexpected development on my part. Everything I've ever read told me that all DS games are region free, and will work on a 3DS from any region without any problems.

Turns out, that is only PARTIALLY true. There's a small number of so-called "DSi Enhanced" games that are indeed region-locked, and information about them is pretty scarce on the internet. I've literally never heard of it before.

So, my game is actually working just fine. I just can't play it on my 3DS.

    1. LeeJ07

      LeeJ07

      @Justin I've been trying to.

I sent the seller two messages now explaining that it was a knee-jerk reaction and I'd like to fix it.

Unfortunately, the way Ebay works, I cannot actually revise my feedback unless and until the seller sends me a request to do so.

And so far he's yet to reply.

  5. Bought a pretty expensive European DS game off Ebay from a seller with a very good reputation. Took awhile to get here, but when it did, the game flat-out refuses to load on my 3DS. I've tried everything, but nothing seems to be working. I left the seller bad feedback on Ebay, but not really sure what else to do. It's a legit DS game, not a repro or counterfeit. Maybe it needs a deep cleaning? I've never had this happen before.

      LeeJ07

Cracked it open, interior is clean.

I can only assume that the main chip is bad, which is such a vanishingly rare thing, but eh. As far as I can tell, it can't be fixed.

      LeeJ07

      You're correct, RD.

3DS is region locked for 3DS games, but DS games from all regions work on it just fine. I actually already have two other Euro DS games that work perfectly.

In this case, I'm just consistently getting a message that says "No Game Card Inserted" every single time I load this new game. I'm familiar with the message because it actually pops up frequently when a card is not seated against the contacts properly, but usually removing and then re-inserting the game fixes it. Sometimes a game has dirty contacts, but I've already tried cleaning the contacts three times, too, and that's not doing it, either.

I've literally never found a DS game that's completely dead before, so I'm kind of at a loss. It's not showing any signs of abuse or damage, so I literally cannot imagine what's wrong with it. I'm about to crack it open, though, and look inside.

  7. Famicom Detective Club on the Switch is definitely worth the wait.

The games are good. Really good.

And the new modern graphics are good, too. Every character has little subtle motions and their clothing and hair blows in the wind dynamically. No static character models here. They really look alive.

    Definitely recommend.

  9. My grandfather in the nursing home with COPD got coronavirus days before the vaccine. This may be the end. A priest was there earlier today. I trust God knows what he’s doing, whether he lives or dies it is His plan.

  10. I had to tear down my entire game room because of my mother. She also made me take down the CRT in my room. I am going to wait a while until this massive, days-long family fight has calmed down before I rebuild. It wouldn’t be Christmas without some massive, destructive, drawn-out family brawls.

  13. Well, um, yeah... Paypal denied my claim, without ever even bothering to ask me for extra evidence.

They never gave me any way to respond to them.

So I'm probably going to disassociate myself from Paypal going forward, if they're just going to unilaterally deny a fraud claim without letting me protest the outcome. Got some choice words about them, but they aren't PG-rated.

    1. LeeJ07

      LeeJ07

@HDN Granted my original one still works, for now. It's almost half a decade old, though.

But the reason I was buying a new one was the decorative design on the front has been bubbling, peeling, and now flaking off, and there's no way to stop the deterioration. So granted, yeah, I'm replacing it for a mostly purely cosmetic issue. But it's a cosmetic issue that can't be fixed and keeps getting progressively worse.

Also, yeah, should've been more careful. I'd just been conditioned in the past to trust Google ads, because I've bought stuff off them many times before, and they were always legit. I actually thought they were curated by Google to weed out obvious scams, but now I know that's very much not the case.

In fact, I highly suspect they didn't send a package until after I filed the claim to Paypal, so I suspect I was screwed from the beginning.

Any time I filed the claim, they would have mailed a fraudulent package, sent the confirmation to Paypal, who will apparently believe ANYTHING, and boom, they win by default.

It's quite a nifty scam. I could admire its ingenuity if I didn't want to strangle them with my bare hands so much.

And then once Paypal got the shipping confo, it was all over. Paypal strung me along for 20 days, claiming they were looking into it, but, to be honest, I don't think anybody at Paypal really did, because any idiot looking even a little ways into it could have discovered where I got scammed, but no, they just took the scammer's word for it and closed it after 20 days of never even bothering to send a follow-up email to me asking if I'd got a legitimate package or not.

Well, that's the thing right there. Since they hadn't sent a tracking link beforehand, I had literally no reason to believe they were sending a package at all.

I guess they banked on me thinking exactly that, no package is coming, so file immediate claim.

They were a step ahead the whole time, I guess, knowing exactly what I was going to do.

Because I wasn't going to file a claim, not for a few more days at least, until I saw there had indeed been no shipping confirmation, so then my immediate knee-jerk reaction was to file a claim.

And THEN they sent shipping confirmation to Paypal, the day after I filed, so yeah, I was played like a fiddle.

There was no way I was ever going to win this.

Damn fraudster played me like a damn fiddle.

If I'd just waited to file a claim, until AFTER that fraudulent package arrived, then I could have provided photographic proof that it was fraud, but, EVERYBODY I talked to said I should file a claim ASAP. Well, those guys screwed me over, too.

I filed the claim too damn early, the fraudster sent "proof" of shipment the VERY NEXT DAY, then the fake package arrived 10 days later.

And the idiots at Paypal just decided to take their word for it, and DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO ASK ME IF A REAL PACKAGE ARRIVED OR NOT.

AND THEN...AND THEN. THEY HAVE THE DAMN GALL TO CLOSE THE CASE IN FRAUDSTERS FAVOR, WITHOUT ONCE GIVING ME A CHANCE TO PROVE MY DAMN CASE.

      SERIOUSLY, F*** PAYPAL.

      F*** Paypal.

  21. Well, that Scam "3DS" I ordered finally arrived in the mail.

Inside the tiny, TINY envelope from China was a flimsy clear i-Phone case that I'd wager isn't worth even 10 cents.

Yeah, I paid $108 dollars for that.

Still haven't heard back from Paypal, though, but there is still an open dispute on the transaction.

    1. LeeJ07

Didn't look like a scam site. There was nothing that openly screamed "this is fake." It came from a Google ad, too, which I used to think were pretty well curated. I've bought lots of things from Google ads, they've always been legit in the past. There is a first time for everything, though.

Anyway, I checked multiple pages of the site, looked at the prices, which were all right around proper retail prices for refurbished systems, checked their "About Us" page, and nothing raised a red flag.

Eh, looking deeper, apparently the scammer DID send the tracking number for the package to Paypal the DAY after I filed the dispute.

So, I don't know what to do.

Yeah, it doesn't look like I can add any extra evidence or extra information, unless Paypal asks for it, and they haven't done so.
