  1. Guess who finally got a WiiU in 2019? That's right, this guy did.

(Yeah, I already have a Switch, but I wanted a WiiU, too.)

  2. Hey guys, if anybody here gets METV, tonight at 10 EST, 9 CST there's an episode of a show called "Collector's Call" in which a video game collector shows off his massive collection, which includes such rarities as a Sega Neptune prototype.

Figured you guys would be interested.

Thank you @LeeJ07 I watch MeTV all the time! Unfortunately tonight at 9PM EST I'll be watching History Channel, they have a documentary called "Game Changers" about the history of video games, including a lot of Atari and Atari people:

@Justin thanks for telling me. I've set my DVR to record it!

I need to get a DVR or something for shows like this.

  3. My local Gamestop has a pre-owned WiiU that I've had my eyes on for several weeks now, so I've decided to save up enough to buy it. I've got almost half the asking price of $129.99 now, and hope to have the other half by March.

I really want to get into the WiiU Virtual Console before Ninty eventually pulls the plug on it.

Oh, I already have a Switch, lol. I bought it on sale from Toys R Us last year when it was going out of business.

It was only 5% off, unfortunately, but hey, a discount is a discount.

To my understanding, the Wii U no longer has online support including the virtual console.  Any prepurchased content, even by a previous owner, is no longer downloadable.  Nintendo turned off their servers for the DS/DSi/Wii/Wii U consoles at the end of last month.  However, I'm not sure about the Wii U (I've thought about one, too) but there are some software modifications that can be done to a Wii to get it back online.

I got lucky with my used Wii as it mysteriously came with two digital games...Tetris Party and Super Mario World (SNES).  I still have them and they still work, just no online support.  I was using Netflix on my Wii on a SDTV but even Netflix said it would no longer work once Nintendo pulled the plug.

WiiU is still online as of now. In fact, they released a NEW game on the WiiU Eshop just last week. Shocking, I know.

  4. My Mom passed away in her sleep early this morning.

    I feel so lost.

With deepest sympathy...sorry for your loss.  I felt lost when I lost my mother.  She was only 40.  I had to find strength in my sadness.  What snapped me out of it was doing things that would make my mother proud of me.  Maybe that will help you later on down the road.

Prayers sent out to you and your family in your time of need.

So sorry to hear Lee. I lost my Mom quite a few years ago. I always made her laugh when she was mad at me about something, I miss that.

Prayers your way & sharing tears

Sad but doesn't surprise me.  Most of the stores I've visited in recent years looked tired and dated.  My hometown's store was not in a safe location and only had parking for a few customers.  Small store dealing mostly with hardware, appliances, and some electronics.  But it never got an update the whole 35 years I was there.  They did do small engine repairs onsite so that might account for their size.  The one that was in the area I live now was slightly bigger but very rundown.  Some of the items they were trying to sell looked like they had been there a few years.  Lawnmowers included.  They left May 1st 2018.  Nothing has tried to go in the spot they were at which is unusual for a small strip mall.

  5. Since I've now got an extra $3k sitting in my bank account, since most necessities have been taken care of, I'm actually starting to look into maybe snagging a few rarer hardware pieces for my *New* collection.

I'm looking at either a Famicom Disk System or a Twin Famicom to start.

    Any suggestions from you guys?

Have you also thought about adding one of those new Sega Genesis classic consoles to your *NEW* collection?  If you have it I would.  I also hear now is the time to start collecting for the Wii U so you might jot that one down.

Yes, I already intend to replace my Wii U. I literally just got a Wii U at the end of March, and come September it's destroyed, forcing me to start all over again.

Sadly, I got talked into just getting a regular Disk System before I saw your replies here, so doesn't look like there will be a Twin Famicom in my future anytime soon.

  6. They said it would never release on a Nintendo console, but today, 22 years after it first debuted on the Sony Playstation, Final Fantasy VII has just released on the Nintendo Switch.

I'm really excited to finally get a chance to play this classic RPG for the first time ever.

  7. Trying to replace my destroyed SNES Classic. Oh. My. God.

I REFUSE to pay over $150 dollars for something I only spent around $70 dollars on the first time. *Sigh*

    1. MaximumRD

This is the way, especially with Nintendo items sadly. I wouldn't either, of course I never bothered with one with all the emulation options, if I DID I would have modded it to load the extra ROMS etc. That's neither here nor there though.

  8. Well guys, I have some good news.

I was able to find a replacement for my Intellivision online for $40. It includes the original box, manual, and three games.

  9. So, I find myself in the market for a Sega Master System. Hoping I can find a cheap one online before 2019 is over.

    1. Justin

      Justin

2019 might be the year I look for a nice Sega Master System too! It's one of my favorite systems. I had a minty fresh one in the box that was stolen out of a storage locker along with many other items from my collection. My best friend had a Master System when we were in elementary school, and when I started retro collecting in middle school I was able to find a Master System II for $19 brand new at Kay-Bee toys with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in. But I always wanted a nice original Master System for my collection. Sega Master System along with TurboGrafx-16 round out the "unique" 8/16 bit systems with great graphics and sound that I love to play. I'll take a Master System over a PS4 or Xbox any day!

It's not all bad news.  There are literally millions of consoles and games out there (both new and used) to buy and enjoy.

My favorite handheld is the good old DS-Lite, and I find games for that all the time.

I love the 3D effect on the New 3DS. It finally worked very well, and I always leave it on to the max setting.

  11. Almost five years of faithful service, but now the painted finish on the casing of my 3DS XL is starting to bubble up and flake off, apparently exacerbated by the humidity here.

I've decided to finally swap the old girl out for a newer refurbished model.

    1. HDN

My beloved 3DS has had that for years. You can tell after a second of looking at it where my hands go. Some chips on it where I dropped it a couple of times. The B and X buttons need a little encouragement to work properly. The back plate is barely being held in place by two screws with chips in the plastic slowly closing in on them. The plastic nub that keeps the stylus from sliding out has been worn down after taking the stylus in and out hundreds if not thousands of times and is reinforced with a layer of masking tape. Every inch of that thing is covered in scratches like it was attacked by a cat.

I love my 3DS and wouldn't trade it for the world. My favorite game system of all time fluctuates between the SNES, GBA and New 3DS XL. I have so many fond memories of the thing.

Wow. You got me all nostalgic there for a second.

  12. Already got over 20 games for my Wii U.

  13. Been experiencing extreme triple-digit heat here for several weeks, and everything is super dry.

Hoping we get some rain and cooler weather soon.

I hope so too!  Stay cool as best you can.  Fall is coming.

  14. Bought a pretty expensive European DS game off Ebay from a seller with a very good reputation. Took awhile to get here, but when it did, the game flat-out refuses to load on my 3DS. I've tried everything, but nothing seems to be working. I left the seller bad feedback on Ebay, but not really sure what else to do. It's a legit DS game, not a repro or counterfeit. Maybe it needs a deep cleaning? I've never had this happen before.

      You're correct, RD.

3DS is region locked for 3DS games, but DS games from all regions work on it just fine. I actually already have two other Euro DS games that work perfectly.

In this case, I'm just consistently getting a message that says "No Game Card Inserted" every single time I load this new game. I'm familiar with the message because it actually pops up frequently when a card is not seated against the contacts properly, but usually removing and then re-inserting the game fixes it. Sometimes a game has dirty contacts, but I've already tried cleaning the contacts three times, too, and that's not doing it, either.

I've literally never found a DS game that's completely dead before, so I'm kind of at a loss. It's not showing any signs of abuse or damage, so I literally cannot imagine what's wrong with it. I'm about to crack it open, though, and look inside.

    3. LeeJ07

      LeeJ07

Cracked it open, interior is clean.

I can only assume that the main chip is bad, which is such a vanishingly rare thing, but eh. As far as I can tell, it can't be fixed.

If you can't work out a resolution with the seller directly, you should use ebay's process and report that the product is defective. You should be able to get a full refund via ebay.

  15. Bought my first ever CIB copy of an NES game.

It's nothing spectacular, not a particularly big name title, but it was reasonably priced and I thought "What the heck?"

Anybody got any suggestions how best to display an NES game box?

I'll share pics when it arrives in the mail.

      Fairly sure it's legit, but it's a lower-tier game.

Not a Black Box title from Nintendo, and not something like a Contra, Final Fantasy, or a Castlevania.

It's Time Lord, from Milton Bradley. Okay game, from what I recall. It's another piece that I had back before the fire that I'm just now replacing, but I happened to see a rather nice CIB example for sale for a pretty reasonable price.

I put games that are in paper boxes in clear case protectors. I bought most of them from https://www.retroprotection.com. Even game boxes that aren't in the best of condition look nicer when encased in these clear protectors (I think).

  16. Dad tested positive for Covid, so we're all quarantined for the next two weeks.

    Upside? More video game time.

Fortunately, none of us are really showing any symptoms, though I think my congestion has grown more pronounced. But, that could be allergies.

      Metroid Dread! Thank the maker!

  18. Famicom Detective Club on the Switch is definitely worth the wait.

The games are good. Really good.

And the new modern graphics are good, too. Every character has little subtle motions and their clothing and hair blows in the wind dynamically. No static character models here. They really look alive.

    Definitely recommend.

I am not aware of a regular physical release except over in Japan, I'm afraid.

  19. Finally got my Sega Genesis hooked up to my TV and discovered it doesn't seem to turn on at all. The little red power light won't even light up. Wondering if anybody knows common issues that would cause this problem. It's a brand new power cable, so I doubt that's the cause.

This console was a gift from a friend, and I'd hate to have to tell them they accidentally gifted me a lemon.

    1. HDN

      Sorry to hear that.

If it helps, a similar thing happens to my SNES occasionally. It might just be a coincidence or chance, but sometimes it helps to flip the plug upside down. Probably won't work for you but hey, worth a shot.

  20. Forgot to update that we moved into our new house about four weeks ago.
