  1. Yesterday was pretty awful here.

Dad had a stroke and we crashed his truck into another vehicle.

  2. Today's my birthday, and I'm turning the big 3.0.

    I don't feel 30.

  3. Sharing the photo of that boxed NES game I recently purchased on here, too.

Awesome!  I have that game and it is fun.  Made by RARE of R.C. Pro-Am, Slalom, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie, and Viva Pinata.  Finding those in a box is extremely rare these days.  In boxes use to be the only way I could get them during the NES craze...and I was stupid enough to throw those boxes out when it should have dawned on me to keep the box for easier storing of everything in the box.

    eBay Finds

I mentioned this before a couple weeks ago on my profile, but I've just now got around to photographing it. This is my first ever boxed NES game, Time Lord.
  5. Bought my first ever CIB copy of an NES game.

It's nothing spectacular, not a particularly big name title, but it was reasonably priced and I thought "What the heck?"

Anybody got any suggestions how best to display an NES game box?

I'll share pics when it arrives in the mail.

      Let's hope it's not a rip-off! 🤞

      Fairly sure it's legit, but it's a lower-tier game.

Not a Black Box title from Nintendo, and not something like a Contra, Final Fantasy, or a Castlevania.

It's Time Lord, from Milton Bradley. Okay game, from what I recall. It's another piece that I had back before the fire that I'm just now replacing, but I happened to see a rather nice CIB example for sale for a pretty reasonable price.

I put games that are in paper boxes in clear case protectors. I bought most of them from https://www.retroprotection.com. Even game boxes that aren't in the best of condition look nicer when encased in these clear protectors (I think).

  6. I watched a really eye-opening video on Youtube last night that pretty succinctly exposed the blatant fraud behind the whole graded/sealed video game market.

Needless to say, Super Mario Bros. selling for $1.5 million dollars is all based on a whole lot of fraudulent market speculation, and it's a house of cards being propped up by an auction house and a grading company that were founded by the same people who caused the coin collecting bubble back in the 1980s.

It's all a bubble, and it's going to pop sooner or later.

Well, that is the nature of things.  As the retro market grows, demand goes up, and prices go up.

As for speculation...it sucks.  But those people are taking a risk.

    3. Justin

      Justin

@LeeJ07 I agree those prices are astronomical! Where specifically is the fraud that you're referring to? Was there a specific incident of fraud? Rip-off report? "Bubbles" are not necessarily fraudulent any more than trends or pet rocks. I think the current price of gas the past few months is "fraudulent"

@Justin I'll link the video here.

It's a bit of a long watch, over 50 minutes, but the video creator went extremely in depth following the money and laid it all out much more succinctly than I'd be able to.

  7. Turns out the game I mentioned yesterday is region-locked!

A completely unexpected development on my part. Everything I've ever read told me that all DS games are region free, and will work on a 3DS from any region without any problems.

Turns out, that is only PARTIALLY true. There's a small number of so-called "DSi Enhanced" games that are indeed region-locked, and information about them is pretty scarce on the internet. I've literally never heard of it before.

So, my game is actually working just fine. I just can't play it on my 3DS.

If the game is working correctly and is as described, I hope you would consider revising that negative feedback you left the eBay seller who it seems like was selling to you in good faith and is probably a good seller :nintendo_mario_1up:

    3. HDN

      HDN

Yup, those games you can only play on a DS or DS Lite! Isn't that the weirdest thing? Those DSi enhanced games and 3DS games are the only reigon-locked Nintendo handheld games.

    4. LeeJ07

      LeeJ07

      @Justin I've been trying to.

I sent the seller two messages now explaining that it was a knee-jerk reaction and I'd like to fix it.

Unfortunately, the way Ebay works, I cannot actually revise my feedback unless and until the seller sends me a request to do so.

And so far he's yet to reply.

  8. Bought a pretty expensive European DS game off Ebay from a seller with a very good reputation. Took awhile to get here, but when it did, the game flat-out refuses to load on my 3DS. I've tried everything, but nothing seems to be working. I left the seller bad feedback on Ebay, but not really sure what else to do. It's a legit DS game, not a repro or counterfeit. Maybe it needs a deep cleaning? I've never had this happen before.

      You're correct, RD.

3DS is region locked for 3DS games, but DS games from all regions work on it just fine. I actually already have two other Euro DS games that work perfectly.

In this case, I'm just consistently getting a message that says "No Game Card Inserted" every single time I load this new game. I'm familiar with the message because it actually pops up frequently when a card is not seated against the contacts properly, but usually removing and then re-inserting the game fixes it. Sometimes a game has dirty contacts, but I've already tried cleaning the contacts three times, too, and that's not doing it, either.

I've literally never found a DS game that's completely dead before, so I'm kind of at a loss. It's not showing any signs of abuse or damage, so I literally cannot imagine what's wrong with it. I'm about to crack it open, though, and look inside.

    3. LeeJ07

      LeeJ07

Cracked it open, interior is clean.

I can only assume that the main chip is bad, which is such a vanishingly rare thing, but eh. As far as I can tell, it can't be fixed.

      socrates63

If you can't work out a resolution with the seller directly, you should use ebay's process and report that the product is defective. You should be able to get a full refund via ebay.

  9. That is indeed StarTropics, along with the original manual, but unfortunately it did not come with the original letter that you're supposed to dip in water.
  10. I added a new/old shelf to my room yesterday, and now I finally have all my cartridge games on display. Previously all those Atari and Genesis games were stored in two boxes on the floor.
  11. Dude, you got Gunpey on the PSP? Crazily enough, I happen to own the original system Gunpey was released on, the Bandai Wonderswan, which was the last piece of hardware designed by Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi before he tragically died. The Wonderswan was only released in Japan. Gunpey was actually named in honor of Gunpei Yokoi after he passed away.
  12. I've picked up a lot lately. Mostly replacements for my collection I lost in the fire. Wii Sports Resort, Fable 3, Fallout 3, Forza Motorsport 4, Odama, just to name a few, are new games I've never owned before. Also went and got an original gold cart of The Legend of Zelda for the NES just because I've always wanted one.
  13. E3 is BACK, baby, and I'm definitely looking forward to Nintendo's showcase on the 15th.

Breath of the Wild 2, I hope?

      Metroid Dread! Thank the maker!

  14. I got a Famicom with its original box and a Famicom Disk System back in late 2019. One of the first new items for my rebuilt collection after the fire. Anyway, yeah, it is CRAZY small. I love the color scheme, though, and I think I prefer it over the White and Gray we got here with the NES. As for Japan-exclusive games, I will suggest "Nuts & Milk," one of the first Hudson Soft releases for the system, "F1 Race," a Pole Position-like racer that strangely never came to America, and "Devil World," a title designed by Shigeru Miyamoto that DID get a European release, but still to this day has never been officially released in North America.
  15. Famicom Detective Club on the Switch is definitely worth the wait.

The games are good. Really good.

And the new modern graphics are good, too. Every character has little subtle motions and their clothing and hair blows in the wind dynamically. No static character models here. They really look alive.

    Definitely recommend.

Is this a digital only release, or is it already out of print? I can only find collector's edition on ebay.

I am not aware of a regular physical release except over in Japan, I'm afraid.

  16. Lost power here 24 hours ago.

No heat, no generator, and we're freezing our butts off.

You aren't the only one.  Hang in there!  If things stay out longer, you can do a hotel.  Or many communities have set up shelters.  In our neighborhood, the local pool offers free access to their showers, for example.

  17. Finally got my Sega Genesis hooked up to my TV and discovered it doesn't seem to turn on at all. The little red power light won't even light up. Wondering if anybody knows common issues that would cause this problem. It's a brand new power cable, so I doubt that's the cause.

This console was a gift from a friend, and I'd hate to have to tell them they accidentally gifted me a lemon.

      Sorry to hear that.

If it helps, a similar thing happens to my SNES occasionally. It might just be a coincidence or chance, but sometimes it helps to flip the plug upside down. Probably won't work for you but hey, worth a shot.

    eBay Finds

Sharing a few Ebay purchases I've made over the last few months. Three 3DS games: The Legend of Legacy, Pilotwings Resort, and Steel Diver. And two more Famicom Disk System games: Deep Dungeons, and Nazo No Kabe.
  19. Dad tested positive for Covid, so we're all quarantined for the next two weeks.

    Upside? More video game time.

New year, new day, and hope abounds 👍

  21. Got my first PS3 ever this year, too. Been playing a lot of Skyrim on it. If you like open-world action RPGs, definitely check out Skyrim. If you get it online, the Playstation Store has PS1 and PS2 games available to download at really affordable prices. I've got a lot of older PS1 RPGs that way.
  22. Managed to reach 1 million points on Laser Blast in the Activision Classics game on my PSP, back in the day. That was A LOT of tedious laser shooting, I can tell you. But it was super satisfying to finally hit 1 million and watch the number counter roll over to !!!!!!. I used to have a photo of the feat, too, but it's off in the Google Cloud somewhere now.
  23. Samus Returns is a very good remake of Metroid 2, but it is about time they put out a new 2D Metroid that isn't a remake. However, they're still distracted with Prime 4, and that game is still a complete unknown regarding when it'll ever be released, so I imagine anything else Metroid related is on the back burner for the foreseeable future.
  24. Replying late, @HDN, but my Wii is BC with GameCube. So, we're both special.
  25. My Mom was all about Ms. Pac-Man. She was really good at it, too. Better than I'll ever be, lol.
