For this challenge, we're taking on SqueakyBox and Atari's take on the classic Stern arcade title Berzerk! When Atari announced its acquisition of a dozen Stern Electronics retro game IPs in March 2023, including Berzerk, everyone wondered how long it would take for the publisher to release BERZERK: RECHARGED. Nine months later, a frenetic twin-stick shooter with a divisive art style and play mechanics. As we wrote in Issue 01 of the Club VCS Fanzine preview, the design has received a mixed response from fans. Some have likened the player character to a ‘50s sci-fi version of Conan O’brien. Others pine for a more traditional take on the robots and Evil Otto. Taken on it's own, BERZERK: RECHARGED is a solid twin-stick and a lot of fun. But don't take my word for. Join in the challenge and fight like a robot! Play in ARCADE mode from level one and take the game as far as you can for the high score! 14. I wanted to follow-up Mouse Trap with my "other" first game: Donkey Kong. As mentioned above, this and Mouse Trap were the pack-in titles with my Coleco Gemini recieved Christmas 1983. This port of Nintendo's smash arcade game is subject to bizarre conspiracies that echo in the halls of the internet to this day. While some folks continue to insist that Coleco intentionally made a subpar port to make the 2600 look bad compared to the Colecovision, that's just hogwash. They wanted to sell as many copies as possible and the 2600 was the mass market system of the day. The reality is that programmer Garry Kitchen did a fine job of porting the game to a 4K cart in short time. Sure it's limited in terms of screens and some enemy logic, but it conveys the feeling of DK. It also has virtually no flicker, great control and nice animations. Is it the best version of DK? Not by a long shot. But it's a nostalgia trip in the same way Atari's Pac-Man is. History hasn't treated it kindly, but for some of us younger Gen Xers, this was our DK.
  15. I look forward to hearing more about this discovery. Thanks for sharing Lance!
  16. The Rev2 and experimental firmware are still up at AA. I think that you have to be logged in to download the files. REV 2: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/360038-atari-2600-beta-update-11-rev2/ Experimental: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/361600-experimental-2600-firmware/
  17. They appear to be treating it like a private label, so there have been no formal announcements. However, if you Google the return address for "Atari XP", you'll see that it's Mega Cat's address: 3559 Bigelow Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA. Coincidence? You be the judge.
  18. Here's an update from the Atari Games Discord server on the long delayed Mt. Run & Jump XP carts offered last summer. They are apparently shipping in April.
  19. Out now for $19.99! Also, the code VCSLOVE works for this through the end of February if you haven't already redeemed it.
  20. Tim Lapetino is the new Creative Director at Atari.

  21. 201,265. I was having a good run until I wasn't. I think I was on the last level. Hadn't played it since the last challenge, so I'm not sure. LOL
  22. @CrossBow - I can look at it today. I just downloaded the experimental firmware and have DD 7800.
  23. Casual gameplay only of Mouse Trap. Originally published by Coleco, this game was later re-released by Atari circa 1987 along with several other Coleco games as part of the red label series. As an arcade port of Exidy's classic, this leaves quite a bit out. Gone are the teleporter, colored gates and hawk. However, they kept the critical elements: mouse, dog, cats, dog bone, and cheese! This was the pack-in (along with DK) with my Coleco Gemini which I received in Christmas 1983. It was one of the very first games I owned, so it has a special place in that childhood corner of my heart. As an adult, it's much too easy in the default mode. Fortunately, the difficulty switches can change cat behavior and the TV Type switch can make the maze invisible. These adjustments make it worth a look. Played with a CX40+ with difficulty set to "Fast Cats" and "Smart Cats." Otherwise, we would have been here all day.
  24. Play full length movies on your 2600 with Movie Cart! We're truly living in the Age of Wonders. https://www.hackster.io/news/watch-full-length-full-color-movies-on-a-fully-original-atari-2600-06d2bad3762b
  25. I saw one of these on the road here. They are just ridiculous IMHO. It's wild that they were ever built. I guess the richest man in the world can make anything happen, even if it looks like an 8 year-old futurist designed it. To be fair, it was more than a year's worth of rain in a weekend here in SoCal. An absolute deluge. But my VW id.4 ain't rusting.
