  1. Just got my copy of Once Upon Atari by the incomparable HSW. Has anyone else read this yet?

I have read it and loved it.  I bought the Kindle version a few months ago.

I had his "Once Upon Atari" video series in the 1990s, it was fascinating :Howard_Scott_Warshaw:

  2. I just beat my first VCS game! It's a title called Spear Master. The gameplay is reminiscent of Buster Bros., where you split bouncing balls in half until they are eliminated. Spear Master lacks the platform element of that game and has a one-touch death mechanic that slows progress.

The game was built with Unity and is on VCS and Steam. It was a lot of fun all around and had a lot of polish.

  3. I got a thing...

I haven't formed any real opinions yet except that PowerA did a hell of a job with both controllers.

Wow! Would love to hear your thoughts about the classic style joystick

    2. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

@Justin - So far the controllers are the most interesting thing about the hardware. The Classic Joystick works great as a paddle in 2600 games and as a rotary in Tempest arcade on the Vault. The game Thrustlander implements the rotation function wonderfully. As a normal 🕹️ it is also very nice. I've used it on Antstream for PacMan and Lock N Chase and it's been great. I'll probably do a full blog post once I spend more time with it.

  4. R.I.P. Fry's Electronics.

Fry's closed all locations on Wednesday with no forewarning. It was one of the last places I could still buy electronics components in-person. Need a 7805 regulator for that ailing 2600? How about a few resistors for that AV mod? Replacements for a leaky cap? They had me covered without the wait of an online order.

It was a quirky, hodgepodge type store with a lot of "As seen on TV" products along side computer, electronics and stereo equipment. It shall be missed.

I agree.  I'm going to miss them.

There's a lot of hate on-line about Fry's that I don't quite get.  A lot of people lost jobs.  And I'm really going to miss being able to go and actually see and touch the items I need.  Sometimes, you need that ability to help decide how to solve a particular problem.

Fry's.  R.I.P.  You will be missed.

      AtariSphinx

One of the only stores I would just go to just to browse/walk around.

Each store, perhaps a bit outdated, had a decore and even store exterior around a theme with my favorites being the Aztec and ancient Egypt.  For example in the Egypt theme store had some computer display desks where supported by large black ancient cats rather than desk legs and hieroglyphics on the walls.

Will also miss going there to find cables that other stores don't stock in store.

For the year prior the pandemic could tell it was going down hill fast as the shelves were half empty and with poor online solution could tell they were not going to make it long when the pandemic hit.

  5. I'm planning a retro gaming "battle jacket" in a punk/metal style.  I'm currently agonizing over the image to use for the back patch which is the centerpiece of any battle jacket.  I've narrowed it down to Joust, Missile Command and RoadBlasters...

Any of those choices will be awesome.

  6. Rikki & Vikki is now sold out on the 7800 but its still available on Steam.  Currently its on sale for just $1.99.  If you were ever curious now is the time; you can't beat that price!  I can't recommend the game enough.

  7. Pretty pumped that Pac-Man publisher Bandai-Namco reposted my Pac-Tree on their IG and Twitter!  Totally made my day!

Thanks @HDN! Yeah, I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. It was one of those last minute ideas... My girlfriend and daughter with both quietly skeptical before they saw it. LOL!  It was important for me to cover different games/iterations, including Atari 2600 Pac-Man. I'm glad that you like it!

Thanks @Justin! It was a fun project and really cool as a fan for Bandai-Namco to repost!

That is super awesome @Sabertooth! Not only are the decorations fabulous, the photos really pop.

Your recognition by Namco should definitely be logged in NSG's post about someone big tweeting you back 👍

  8. Scored a Concerto cart for the 7800 last night! It's been hard to snag one of these things. Woot!

I got one too about a week ago...but it has yet to arrive.  Exciting!

  9. I decided to make my own ornaments this year. Glue sticks, poster board, spray paint, foam balls and construction paper. Any guesses on the theme based on this photo?

Thanks, Rick! I've always wanted to do a retro tree. Pacman seemed like a good choice for the 40th anniversary.

  10. These Evercade Lynx collections are fantastic. Aside from the lack of a Comlynx port, the games play flawlessly and look great. The screen is big and bright and they included some real heavy hitters, including California Games, Checkered Flag, Blue Lightning and Chip's Challenge. At a fraction of the cost of a McWill modded Lynx and 25 carts this is great way to experience these games!

      socrates63

Good to know! I'd like a McWill Lynx but the price is 😮 Maybe I'll dabble in Evercade and its Lynx games instead.

    2. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

I've really enjoyed the Evercade. The collections so far have been pretty good, the screen is nice and HDMI out is a great touch. Also, having the collections on carts is fun and unique for an emulation system. I'm hoping they do a console version that takes the same software.

  11. I feel "deep retro" at the moment. Listening to the Cars debut record with turntable through the Atari Video Music while giving Demon Attack one more go on a 4-switch Sears Video Arcade and CRT. #deepretro #innovativeleisure

P.S. In my humble opinion, The Cars 1979 eponymous debut is as close to a perfect record as exists in rock music.

Oh man, super cool post. You've definitely got that Atari swagger.

  12. Anyone else playing Star Wars: Squadrons? I'm flying a freaking TIE in 3D space.

Never heard of it, but it looks cool. It’s crazy how far 3D Star Wars games have come since Star Wars Arcade.

Speaking of which, that would make a really cool VR game.

Looks gorgeous 👍 I've seen a couple of YouTube videos, and it looks like an awesome Star Wars game.

Oh God. Tell me about it. I'm going to have nightmares tonight about being thrown off platforms I can't get back up to.

  14. The original Sony PlayStation wasn't the only gaming hardware to see a September '95 North American release...

Happy 25th to the Atari Jaguar CD!  Only 11 official titles were released on the platform and a meager 20,000 units are reported to have been produced.

Celebrate the launch of the doomed Atari Jaguar peripheral with this montage of the 11 official releases, Virtual Light Machine and more!

Can you still get the ROM version of Iron Soldier 2 on cartridge? It would be sought after for sure.

    3. DegasElite

Never mind. Songbird has both CD and cartridge versions. Cool.

    4. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

Yeah @DegasElite, all of the Telegames releases are still available from legit sources for decent prices. The cart of IS3 version doesn't have cutscenes or music but is the same otherwise.

  15. I picked up a Samsung GX TV in working order and decent cosmetic condition. I remember when these came out and it's as ridiculous now as it was then!

Pretty pumped on the sound and picture.

  16. I thought that I'd share my first attempt at a teaser video for my upcoming channel. It's really an exercise in figuring out the video editor LOL!

Can you name the games that I captured?

Probably just a quirk of my PC or browser.

Cosmic Ark and Trick Shot.  I've spent the most time with those two.  While NOT an Atari game Beauty & The Beast on the INTV is awesome.

  20. A little VLM on this beautiful socially distanced Sunday!

The Jaguar CD is hard to recommend on the game library alone. The VLM makes it worthwhile. It's actually my only CD player at this point.
