I am still trying to finish NES "Legend of Zelda", and I've made it to this second dungeon boss. That's all I can do for today though.

🤔 What was the first video game you fell in love with as a child?
-
Arcade and 2600 for SI, arcades for the other two. Although OutRun was the sole reason why I wanted a Master System.
Gyruss I loved in the arcades. I never knew it ever made it to the home consoles and computers. Anything Atari my hometown stopped carrying for the longest time. I'd own this arcade if I could.
OutRun was a total shock when I first seen it. I couldn't get enough of it but, unfortunately, I didn't have enough money either. I loved everything about this game.

Space Invaders, Gyruss, later OutRun. All have remained favorites.

I try to look at things close up and I have to remove my glasses. To look at things far away I have to put them back on.

🖖 Atari Age members are welcome here. Atari VCS players are welcome here. Young people just discovering the World of Atari are welcome here. Atari alumni are welcome here. Atari I/O is a Disney World of classic gaming - a place for people of all interests, ages and skill levels to gather and make friends discussing our favorite hobbies - and continuing the adventure of what comes NeXT.

I agree with this. Atari was about family and friends spending time together, it wasn't always about the games. Atari is how and why I learn how to be social. Doesn't matter where you are from, we are all here for the same reason. And we all need a break from life. So sit down, visit with people on here, and enjoy a good game. It doesn't even have to be an Atari game. Whatever game you want to play...the idea is to enjoy yourself. Come here and lower your stress level. See? Atari Pac-Man is good for something after all!

Paul Reubens is dead at 70. Apparently, he's privately battled cancer for the past several years. Pee Wee Herman meant the world to me as a little boy. Sad to hear.
-
Sad to hear that. Regardless of reasons why some people disliked him he was a unique entertainer and created some of the most annoying catch phrases of all-time. He was easy to spot in film and sitcoms when he made cameo appearances. I had a cousin who grew up watching his Playhouse show.
It's sad to hear he battled cancer. He was a master of his craft. He did what no one else did and in some ways kept a bit of nostalgia from past actors in his character. I mean, A suit and tie. That was something left in the past unless you was a game show host.
R.I.P. Pee Wee. You entertained us well.

Personal update — I’ve been dealing with back pain for more than a year. Late Monday, I went to the ER and Tuesday morning, I underwent a surgery for a herniated disc. It was diagnosed as a medical emergency. Surgery went well, but I will be in the hospital for another week. I’ve lost some function of my left leg and will be rehabbing in the hospital, and after I’m discharged, I will be returning for more intensive rehab. I am expected to make a full recovery.
In the meantime, should I be worried about my 7800 Asteroids score in the high score challenge? 😂 Game on 🕹️

Best of luck to you and here's for a speedy recovery!
Your score in Asteroid? Im coming after it lol. I figure if I aim high I will at least break 100,000. Your score is not my goal, 100k is. Beating your score would be a bonus. But no worries, I can't even reach my last score I posted.

I've made poor retro gaming choices. I have only have two classic platforms, an Atari 5200 and a Texas Instruments 99/4A. Both topic areas are like ghost towns... sigh.

Computer upgrade time!
My trusty main desktop computer is dying. I believe it's the motherboard that failed. The built-in network adapter failed about a year ago. And now the CPU is overheating. No amount of reseating the heatsink or re-applying thermal compound helps. My guess is the capacitors are dying, causing too-high voltage.I searched high and low for a pre-built computer that wasn't too terribly expensive, but failed. It isn't easy to find a desktop that has an optical drive (or space for one) AND the ability to add in a big video card (including power connectors). Most of what I found was over $1000.
Instead, I consulted one of my children, who helped me pick these parts. Total spent is $200. I'll re-use a lot of my existing setup. Including the DDR4 memory, power supply, case, SSD, and Blu-ray drive.
Hopefully, I can get my Windows license to transfer.
Wish me luck!

I'm trying to figure out how to write a simple game on my Atari 400 which goes like this:
The Atari picks a random number from 1 to 100. The player enters their name, presses return and then types in a guess. The computer says "Try a higher or lower number or That's it! if they guess it. The computer keeps track on screen of how long it takes to get the correct number.
Here's what I have so far but it's not working. I'm hoping for some help. Thanks.

OG Doom, how I have missed thee ❤️
I recently picked up Doom from the eShop because it was on sale, and I’ve been playing it the past couple of days. I have the various Doom releases on multi-gen Xbox and Playstation consoles, but it was this release for the Switch that got me to play the original Doom once more. I hadn’t touched it since I played it during my college days thirty years ago (with the lights on, of course).
Still fun as I remembered it. Still gets me once in a while with a jump scare 😂 It feels a little weird playing with the Hori split pad pro on the Switch. I think it’s the thumb sticks being so far apart. Maybe I should open the Pro controller still in the box. I heard recently that the Switch now supports keyboard and mouse? I probably won’t go that far to replicate the original controller experience, but it was just a passing thought.
Graphics look good with none of the slow downs like when I played on my Northgate 386/33 and later the Cassiopeia Pocket PC. Sound effects sound right, but the music? Maybe it’s just my memory or I’m confusing the music from later Doom games.
No matter — hail to the King, baby! Oops, wrong game, but this is The One that got us super stoked about graphic card upgrades and defined a whole new genre of games called FPS.
