Objective

Play for the highest possible score using the difficulty settings defined in the challenge. Post a photo or YouTube video of your score in this thread. Scores must be achieved between August 1st through August 31st, 2024. Screen captures are not allowed as they are more easily manipulated for falsified scores. Multiple submissions are permitted. The player with the highest score at the end of the competition is the victor!

Eligibility

Anyone can join in. All players are welcome!

Play Rules

Games may be played on real hardware, Flashback / Mini console, FPGA or emulation, using any controller or keyboard, following all rules and game settings defined in the challenge. Choosing between real hardware or emulation, and choosing which controller to play on is part of formulating your strategy. Enhancements, rewinds, save states and hacked versions of this game are not allowed.

Difficulty Level

DIFFICULTY B - We are playing Kaboom with Difficulty Switches set to B. This provides for standard gameplay with traditional sized Buckets (Paddles) suited for players of all skill levels.

Fair Play

Your integrity is everything. Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! Falsified scores will result in your immediate removal from the site. It goes without saying that we will not allow cheats, hacks, cartridge frying, enhancements, rewinds, deceitful photo manipulation, subterfuge, or any other unfair advantage. Everybody hates a cheater.

Message

Welcome to our 161st Squad Challenge! This month we'll be playing a blast of an Activision signature classic, Kaboom! for the Atari 2600 VCS! Prepare yourself for a supreme test of reflexes, coordination, and agility. You're about to face the world's most unpredictable and relentless "Mad Bomber" dropping bombs on you from on top of the apartment building! It's up to you to catch his bombs in your buckets, before they hit the street below. The Mad Bomber hates losing as much as you love winning. So, to keep him frowning, grab your buckets and bomb away! Can you keep up? Have fun and good luck on your high scores!

Dammit, I sold my paddles and even if I didn’t they don’t work, is why I sold them. Will try to get the CX-30+ paddles from Atari themselves to try this out

You can also try an updated Gamestation Pro if you've got one of those.

Been in hibernation from Squad Challenge but seeing a paddle game got me motivated to play.   Got the patch!

Awesome!  Any tips for the rest of us?

You are welcome to post your score over on the "Activision Patch Worthy Scores" thread and @socrates63 will add you to the champions table.

Hey everyone!!! New around here and figured a Kaboom Squad Challenge would be a great way to break the ice.

796 for a warm up score.

2600 Vader and a set of Sears paddles.

Hope everyone is well.

You are always welcome here!

Good video, but I've always found you have to take the time to disassemble those pots to get all the old gunk out.

Keep on Kabooming.

My best tip is when your score is nearing the 1000 mark (assuming you have 3 buckets), intentionally miss.   This slows the next grouping once again to a more manageable pace and you should recover a bucket almost immediately as your score passes the 1000 mark.  Rinse and repeat for 2000, 3000,...  This is in the manual as a tip and actually a good tip which is a rarity sometimes in the manuals

I will also recommend don't pause between waves.  I find that if I keep the waves going (click the red button) with minimal pause between waves helps the timing/concentration.

Hope that helps.

Very helpful, thank you!

I've heard that 1000 point tip before, but the problem for me is keeping my eye on the score without losing track of bombs!  I'll keep trying.

I want to congratulate @AtariSphinx on winning the High Score Squad Challenge with a fantastic score of 3,829 points! Way to go!

I also wanted to give a big welcome back to longing Squad Champs @AtariSphinx and @Atari Creep who joined us for this month’s challenge! Good to have you here and out of hibernation!

You guys will have to be patient with me this week. I blew out another GPU this morning so i will likely be without a computer this week, and running Atari I/O from my cell phone, so bear with me as I do Squad Challenge without access to all my fun tools like Photoshop etc.
